Can you hear the Eco?

» many don‟t. we can teach them.

together we can make a difference The Green Revolution Starts with Personal Choices It is time to go beyond the „Earth

hour‟ to save energy. And well done is

better than well said. You can follow

these simple steps everyday to

achieve energy savings and make our

world a better place.

>> USE EFFICIENT LIGHTING

Replace incandescent bulbs with

compact fluorescents (CFLs). These use

four times less energy, last eight times

longer. So you not only cut your

electricity bills dramatically, you also

save a lot of money buying bulbs.

>> USE ENERGY EFFICIENT ELECTRIC

APPLIANCES

They use two to 10 times less electricity

for the same functionality and are mostly

higher quality products that last longer

than the less efficient ones. In India,

appliances like refrigerators and ACs

have efficiency rating labels ranging

from 1 to 5 stars, the higher number

being more efficient.

>> USE AN ENERGY EFFICIENT COMPUTER

Buy a laptop instead of a desktop. It

consumes five times less electricity. If

you buy a desktop, get an LCD screen.

Enable the power management function

on your computer, the screensaver does

not save energy. Check if your computer

supports the more advanced speed step

power management. Switching off a

computer extends its lifetime. Minimize

printing. Pay bills online.

>> DRIVE LESS

Walk, bike, carpool or take public

transport. You'll save 1.5 kg of carbon

dioxide for every 5km you don't drive.

Use cars that run on cleaner fuels such

as CNG and LPG. Switch off your car if

you want to stop for more than two

minutes.

>> SAY NO TO PLASTIC

Take a cloth bag with you when

shopping. Use recycled paper. Avoid

products with a lot of packaging.

>> Check your tyres

Keeping your tyres inflated properly can

improve the fuel efficiency of your car.

Every liter of petrol saved keeps 2.5 kg

of carbon dioxide out of the

atmosphere. Using radial tyres will help

you save 3 to 7 % of fuel.

>> USE WATER CAREFULLY

Don't waste water. Use a mug of water

when brushing your teeth, shaving or

washing your hands and face. Instead of

a shower or tub bath, use a bucket. Try

to harvest rain water in your locality. It

takes a lot of energy to heat water- use

less hot water and use efficient heating

appliances.

>> USE RENEWABLE ENERGY

Sunlight can be used in many different

ways to save energy. Use a solar water

heater instead of an electric geyser. For

lighting, use batteries that can be

charged with sunlight. A solar cooker

cooks rice and vegetables without losing

their essential nutrients. Just leave the

solar cooker outside in the sun to cook

your food.

>> PLANT MORE TREES

A single tree will absorb one tonne of

carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one

sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures

are cooler to minimize evaporation.

Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water

from the tap.

Turn off the water while you shave and save up to 300 gallons a month.

To save water and time, consider washing your face or brushing your teeth

while in the shower.

Global Warming Sets Earth On Vibrator Mode

HUMAN ACTIVITIES CAUSE MAJORITY OF GLOBAL WARMING.

Major tsunamis in Asia in the recent past and a series of

frequent medium-large scale earthquakes is just another

warning. Global warming is always leading us towards:

5. Spread of disease

4. Warmer waters and more hurricanes

3. Increased probability of droughts

2. Economic consequences caused thereby

1. Melting polar ice caps

Presently, not many will believe that global warming was the

cause of Japan‟s latest tsunami. Especially those who are

aware that Japan lies in the earthquake and tsunami prone

zone will debate this. But it is sensible to believe that

someday the warming atmosphere and oceanic

temperature will directly lead to such a catastrophe.

Global warming causes melting of glaciers at increased

speed. Glaciers are massive sheets of ice covering Earth‟s

poles. When they are intact, glaciers exert enormous

pressure on the portion of the Earth‟s surface they cover.

When glaciers begin to melt that pressure is reduced,

eventually causing all sorts of geologic reactions, such as

earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

A glacier named as „West Antarctic Ice Sheet‟ is located in

Antarctica. As a result of the melting ice this glacier is slowly

shifting since many years now. Geophysicists are recording

the regular movements of such glaciers. Its normal average

shift as noted since 2007 was 1 meter per day. But very

recently it was noted that this glacier shifted by almost half

a meter in only 30 minutes. The unusual slip event of this

glacier was very likely related to the surface seismic waves

of the Japan earthquake.

Global warming leads to thermal expansion and hence a

rise in water level at the oceans. Melting glaciers also

contribute to this. The oceanic water level has rose by 5-8

inches in last 100 years and expected to rise by 2 feet in the

coming 100 years. This will simply wipe out many coastal

cities and island countries from the globe or cause floods in

major part surrounded by the oceans. Anyhow, the

consequences would be catastrophic.

Watching 2012 (movie) was thrilling and fun but if we don‟t

want to experience the disaster in reality then we must take

actions to reduce global warming. If you are not sure what

exactly to do then go back to page 1. Follow the given

simple steps in your routine life and save energy, reduce

global warming. Though it is late, believe that it is possible.

Let us be a part of the solution and not the pollution.

Matheran - I have been there 3 times

and still whenever I think about a

weekend break, it is my favorite spot.

This „jungle on top‟ spreads lavishly on

7.35 sq km of high altitude 800 m. It is

India‟s only non-polluted hill resort and

the banned vehicles have helped

maintain this reputation. The thick

canopies of evergreen forests keep the

hill station naturally cool.

Long, cool walks under the shades of

trees and scenic trails assured me a

toxin-free air, rejuvenated mind and a

relaxed spirit in Matheran. Matheran

does not cover a big area but has as

much as 35 points of special

interest. These are some of the

best points that you will like.

PANORAMA POINT – offers a panoramic

view of the Sahayadri Range. Watching

sunrise from this point is an

unforgettable experience!

CHARLOTTE LAKE – favorite picnic spot.

The lake has a dam at one end and a

temple at the other.

KING GEORGE POINT – waterfall over

Charlotte Lake during of just after the

monsoon. This is a must watch point.

I really enjoyed the 20 km toy train

journey which takes you through the

zigzag distance from Nerul to Matheran.

This journey, though longer than 2

hours, is a treat to watch as the scenes

around you keep on changing quickly.

I have always visited Matheran during

October as this is the best time at the

end of monsoon.

Matheran is located at nearly same

distance from Mumbai and Pune and is

one of the better places to spend a

relaxed weekend with the green nature.

Weekend Spot

On March 11th a massive 9.0 - magnitude

earthquake occurred near the

northeastern coast of Japan, creating

extremely destructive tsunami waves

which hit Japan just minutes after the

earthquake. It has left thousands of

people dead, injured or missing, and

millions more affected by lack of

electricity, water and transportation.

It is the biggest setback to the country

after World War 2. However, people of

Japan, yet again, have shown strong

resistance in the aftereffects of this

disaster.

They have displayed some distinguished

qualities such as:

THE CALM - Not a single visual of chest-

beating or wild grief. Sorrow itself has

been elevated.

THE DIGNITY - Disciplined queues for

water and groceries. Not a rough word or

a crude gesture.

THE ABILITY - The incredible Structural

engineering made sure that the buildings

swayed but didn‟t fall. In addition, the

buildings were designed for earthquake

loads, as specified in the Japanese

codes.

THE GRACE - People bought only what

they needed for the present, so

everybody could get something.

THE ORDER - No looting in shops. No

honking and no overtaking on the roads.

Just understanding.

THE SACRIFICE - Fifty workers stayed

back to pump sea water in the N-

reactors. How will they ever be repaid?

THE TENDERNESS - Restaurants cut

prices. An unguarded ATM is left alone.

The strong cared for the weak.

THE TRAINING - The old and the

children, everyone knew exactly what to

do. And they did just that.

THE MEDIA - They showed magnificent

restraint in the bulletins. No silly

reporters. Only calm reportage.

THE CONSCIENCE - When the power

went off in a store, people put things

back on the shelves and left quietly!

A road that was destroyed in the

earthquake has been repaired in just six

days demonstrating just how quickly the

nation is trying to get back on its feet.

Work began on this road on March 17

and was completed just 6 days later,

repairing the enormous cracks which

were left after the earthquake and

tsunami on March 11.

We interviewed two of our CE-Ngineers who had been

onsite for work. Here are snippets of the heartfelt chats.

Q: HOW WAS YOUR FEELING WHEN YOU WERE FINALIZING FOR THE

GERMANY VISIT?

Hitendra: I felt great that I got the chance to visit our Head office. I was happy! Dinesh: My visit to Germany was finalized within 2 days. It was much unexpected. No time for feelings!

Q: CAN YOU GIVE US AN INSIGHT ABOUT THE WORK ON TOUR?

Hitendra: I did the same work that I do in India but I got more knowledge to share with the team members about the project. Dinesh: Our main task was to understand the current project and we had a task to do the work in a more organized way to handle our teams to prepare and implement an efficient system for CE-N India.

Q: CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF YOUR COUNTRY SIDE MEMORIES?

Hitendra: In Germany we visited the mining museum which I really liked. Engineers will mostly like this museum. Children would also enjoy watching the machinery. Dinesh: We have been to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. It was a great feeling when you are standing under the world class steel structure which is also the mode for our current project- complex steel structure.

Q: YOUR EXPERIENCE DURING FLIGHT?

Hitendra: The food was good in the flight especially the “chaai”.

Dinesh: Not very good Airhostesses :-( I only love the part when the flight is taking off but not the landing.

Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORKING STYLE OF GERMANY

AND INDIA?

Hitendra: In Germany the main difference is that they work for less time but with much more efficiency. In India we work for more time but with lesser efficiency. Their output is more than ours. They always look at the bigger picture and in detail. Dinesh: The German approach towards any activity or task is very systematic. They are very organized in maintaining & using information or data. They spend more time on study than action.

Q: THINGS YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE COUNTRY-GERMANY?

Hitendra: Cleanliness and dedication towards their work. Dinesh: The disciplined culture. Everybody follows every rule even if nobody is monitoring or controlling. This is applicable to every public place be it parks, metros, offices, malls or restaurants.

Q: WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM THIS

EXPERIENCE AND WILL TREASURE?

Hitendra: The trip helped me to meet the German people in person. I am now much more confident and comfortable to interact with onsite people than I was before this trip. Dinesh: I think there are many things which I learnt from this trip, so it is difficult to pick a single one. But the trip itself is one learning experience from which I have some sweet memories.

A SWOT analysis is a tool used for strategic planning that looks at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for a project. This type of analysis can be applied to a variety of different projects, and looks at favorable, unfavorable, internal and external factors involved with achieving specific objectives. It is also an important tool for personal growth as it provides a clear summary of the opportunities and issues faced.

Let‟s see how the SWOT analysis worked well with our Indian Cricket team which was selected to play in W Cup 2011!

Strengths: Balanced team, Sub continental playing conditions, Home –crowd support

Weaknesses: Inconsistency, Dependency on individual performers, Absence of genuine all-rounder, Brittle middle order batting

Opportunities: Spinning pitches in the sub continent, Shining stars like Virat Kohli, Inspiration called Sachin playing in his last W Cup

Threats: Injuries, Players short of match practice

Now that the available information is sorted in SWOT, the team is expected to capitalize on their strengths and opportunities and take corrective actions to avoid the weaknesses and threats from surfacing.

If you recall, the Indian team exactly performed as per their strengths and overcame the weaknesses to win the W Cup in style. Try it yourself. You can be successful with flying colors!

Do you think Dr. Anna Hazare got more attention than the Cricket World Cup winning Indian team? Yes. In fact he deserves all the attention from his nation as he is leading the fight against something which every Indian is concerned about, directly or indirectly.

This 72 year old man, who has hardly any impressive looks, is one of most respected and noted socialist in India. Anna is a expert of many battles - as a former soldier and now as a social worker. He has been prominently fighting against corruption in this democratic country. His excellent efforts forced firstly the Maharashtra Government and then the whole country to pass „Right to Information‟ (RTI) act. He has respectfully and humbly returned several awards which were conferred to him by the government.

In the past week, Dr. Hazare had launched an indefinite hunger strike for early enactment of „Jan Lokpal Bill‟ in Parliament. Many celebrities, politicians, important people from various fields supported Anna – Mallika Sarabhai, Arvind Kejriwal, Swami Agnivesh, Anupam Kher, Preteish Nandi, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor are a few names. Most importantly, it was the common man‟s lively support to Anna. Anna also acknowledged the huge support saying that he never expected the movement to grow so big.

According to the Bill, „Lokpal‟ will be an independent body that would investigate corruption cases filed by the common man, complete the investigation within a year and envisage trial in the case getting over in the next one year. This body will be completely independent of government and no minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence the investigations carried out by the body. All

the loss that a corrupt person has caused to the government will be recovered during the conviction. For the common man, if any work is not done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant.

A citizen can approach Lokpal if his ration card, passport or voter card is not being made or if police is not registering his case or any other work is not being done in prescribed time. The Lokpal will also provide protection for any or all the complainants. The entire functioning of the body is said to be completely transparent and any complaints against the officials in the body itself will be investigated on a fast track of two months.

By the definition, „Jan Lokpal Bill‟ seems to be strong enough to control corruption in the country. It‟s power can be simply judged from the fact that this Bill has been revived in 1971, 1977, 1985, 1989, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2005 and most recently in 2008, every time it was referred to some committee for improvements. The corrupt ministers and bureaucrats had been successful, so far, to keep this Bill out of the parliament. Now the hunger strike by Anna and the mass activism caused thereby has left no more choices for the government. Government, on Friday night agreed to issue a formal order to set up a joint committee for drafting an effective Bill.

The common man now supports Anna, once again, following the ray of hope called the „Jan Lokpal Bill‟ to fight against the darkness caused by corruption.

Corruption: Your Will Count NO

It is almost impossible to find out one thing or one person who is agreeably beautiful to everyone. Beauty can be defined in many ways and everyone uses own imagination to relate to this word. The dictionary defines it as: A combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense. But poets, philosophers, scientists, socialists, you and me; we all have our different ideas when asked: What is Beauty?

When asked to define Beauty, my friends too had different views. Shalini feels, "Beauty is quality of being good at heart and a helping attitude. First impression is the best impression but beauty can often be found beyond the first impression. A person with a good heart is always more beautiful than a person with a good face." Arati puts it differently as, "transparency in thoughts, kindness and confidence." "When word beauty comes to my mind then I always look for person's smile. Smile can tell us what the person is thinking", says Vaishali.

My definition of „Beauty‟ is subjective. I have met people who were good-looking but not so pleasant to be with. I have also met people who were ordinary but interesting because they were wonderful and witty. I think that happiness, confidence, dignity and humor are the powerful components of beauty, along with the more traditional attributes of physical appearance, body weight and shape, and even a sense of style.

Every child is beautiful for its parents; for a new-born its mother is beautiful; for a husband his wife is beautiful and for a blind person even simple words can mean beauty.

That is okay, as that is usually the way it is. Your life will determine what you find beautiful and there really is no wrong answer. The important thing is that you don't treat people badly who do not fit into your definition of beauty.

Cricket, in our country, is higher than any religion. Uniting 1.21 billion people, it also gives us all a larger than life game, something to learn from, something to hope for and something to live.

Doesn‟t matter what has happened to you. It‟s what you do

about it that counts. A prince, Oxford graduate, a terrific cricketer, having lost his eye in tragic accident, Nawab Pataudi fought back with all his might. Tiger went on playing for India, became the youngest captain. NEXT TIME ADVERSITY STRIKES, JUST BE A TIGER!

Not many have heard about Hokaito Zhimomi! The first

cricketer from Nagaland. He‟s probably the best cricketer his homeland has produced. Fans idolize him for becoming the first one to have joined IPL for KKR. He might not have played for team India but is not everyone becomes a lead, or an CEO. So run your own race. DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF WITH OTHERS. DOING WELL IN CLASS IS IMPORTANT. BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO COME FIRST ALWAYS.

Remember the time during tough matches, when team needs

a push from middle order, Yusuf Pathan proved to be the right choice. Seem to be a changed man now; he makes winning games from seemingly hopeless situations. Revealing the secret, he refers about staying back at practice for mere 30 minutes with the coach, even after everyone else has left. JUST AN EXTRA 30 MINUTES GIVES YOU UNDIVIDED ATTENTION OF

THE COACH. That's all it takes.

Who hasn‟t heard of the God of Cricket! Sachin Tendulkar!

Playing for 20 years now, there have been many ups and downs when fans faith was shacking. He still became the one with an outstanding consistent performance, an unbeatable 200, that too without a runner. What new record he hasn‟t set! BE IT ANY SUCCESS OR TIMES OF NOT-THAT-GOOD-A-LUCK, NEVER LOSE YOUR TEMPER AND FOCUS ON YOUR GOAL. That‟s what will keep one up all the time.

This case doesn‟t belong to any player. For such a vast

nation, it‟s not possible for every cricket lover to be in top 11. But doesn‟t look to have bothered people like Charu Sharma, Harsha Bhogle. To first degree cricket, they have bestowed the fellow aspirants all a new direction to success. MAKES US BELIEVE ON THEIR ACHIEVEMENT.

Last but not the least, it shows us the power of

determination, that leaves nothing impossible and importance of team work. Recall the time when Bhajji slapped Sreesanth during IPL. Such a bitter memory that is, still like best pals, they moved on. SHOWS US TO BE QUICK TO FORGIVE SPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO A PERSON WHO YOU KNOW, WILL STAND BY YOUR SIDE, WHENEVER NEEDED.

YOUR OFFICE IS MORE THAN MERE CUBICLE SPACE WHERE FILES ARE DOCUMENTED AND MEETINGS HELD. IT‟S ALSO WHERE CO-WORKERS INTERACT AND SHARE THE MAJOR PART OF A DAY TOGETHER. OFFICE CONVERSATIONS CAN RANGE FROM PLANNING AND REVIEWING PROJECTS TO MORE PERSONAL STUFF ABOUT YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OFFICE DEPENDING ON YOUR RAPPORT WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES. However, it is important to realise and define boundaries of topics that can be discussed without issues amongst your peers and superiors and also what is best left out. Workplace is, after all where you are linked to your colleagues through professional profiles and not by choice. Some colleagues do transcend the boundaries and become friends over time, but the bridge should be built giving due space to the other person and not infringing on being too nosey.

Getting personal – At workplace, work ranks first. Are you faced with the dilemma of a co-worker who talks non-stop about his/her family outings and fights first thing when he/she walks into the office? Or another who demands to know what you did over the weekend? Well, it‟s your call over how personal you want your association to be, but follow the following pointers as a general rule:

Respect your colleagues‟ privacy and understand that they are not obligated to share their personal lives in office. If faced with continued intruding queries, have a chat with the

person in question and reaffirm the level of acquaintance you share with him/her and how you would like to continue the association further on.

Your boss and you – Your boss might be an understanding and approachable person who gives you enough opportunities to apply your thoughts to projects and take chances. However, when things go wrong, while it is brave to stand up and admit that you goofed up, it is not alright to remain clueless over the next course of action. Always have an alternative plan in place; show initiative by countering downfalls with damage control ideas.

Salary talk ¬– If there is any taboo office topic then it is talking about how much you or your colleague earns. Keep any kind of information related to compensation to yourself and discuss any queries only with the HR. Salary details, bonuses and allowances are not same for everyone and are based on individual capabilities. Discussions and comparison of the same is a futile exercise that can only create cracks in professional relationships.

Controversial topics – There are some topics for which office is not the apt venue. Expressing strong views on religion, marital status, and one‟s lifestyle should be avoided at all times.

Fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna helps you during major depression and enhance mood - Eat fish twice a week. If you don‟t like fish then Omega-3 fats present in Seafood, walnuts, flaxseed meal serve same purpose.

Vitamin B-Folic acid help nerve cells that regulate your mood - dark green spinach, legumes, oranges, peanuts.

The body depends on antioxidants - from vitamins C and E to protect against cell damage and memory loss. Add these to your diet: dried plums, berries, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, purple grapes, mangoes, green tea and whole grain.

Foods for your moods

Don‟t let stress and bad moods bring you down!

Being healthy isn‟t just about looking good and being attractive.

Mental and emotional well-being is important with the physique.

Today‟s younger generation is all concerned about the „looks‟ as

that makes them feel good about being accepted in the society.

But these „looks‟ are often to cover the depression, obesity,

insomnia, diabetes, emotional instability, irritability etc. These

diseases are dangerous and obstacle to one‟s individual growth.

The root cause to all this is psychology and lifestyle.

Depression, for instance, is a lifestyle inflicted disease for a

person who is very busy, doesn‟t find time for self and becomes

self-alienated. Obesity is another disease which is by-product of

depression or reckless lifestyle. Technology today brings the

world under 2 buttons of the computer mouse. You don't move

an inch from here to there at home or work. Minimal movement

and no exercise leads to obesity. Junk food fashion and

excessive alcohol are also prominent causes to swelling bellies.

Depression and obesity are causes as well as results of many

other discomforts to the body. Our body is like a machine, if one

part doesn‟t work properly the whole machine gets affected.

Young generation should understand that only physical well-

being may harm them in long run. Mental and emotional well-

being is as important as physical fitness. That‟s when you get the

real “feel good” feeling!
