We are thrilled to have Nicolas Billon’s Iceland, the 2012 SummerWorks hit, as part of our season. We have both had the privilege of watching this play blossom from its initial stage on the page to its critically acclaimed run last summer. We have also been great fans and supporters of all the artists involved: the phenomenal cast – Claire, Lauren and Kawa – the design team

– Kimberly, Joanna and Richard – the directors – Ravi and Jenna – and of course, the playwright, Nicolas.

Being able to share this unique and innovative play with a larger audience fills us with great pride. As Factory is known for developing new voices within our own home, it is also important and essential to shine a light on the powerful works being created all over our great city.

We welcome all the supporters of Iceland into our home, familiar and new. It’s our hope that everyone will begin to make Factory Theatre a destination for edgy, provocative work that getsyou talking as soon as you leave the theatre.

Enjoy the show.

Nina Lee aquino & Nigel Shawn Williams

There is an art to telling a story.

Iceland is part of a triptych (titled Fault Lines) which also include Greenland and Faroe Islands.

Over the past 5 years, Nicolas, myself, and the actors and creative team from each of these productions have collaborated to tell these stories. We’ve been driven by a search that brings us back to a primal connection between performer and audience, part of the tradition from which theatre was born.

The story. The teller. And you, the audience.

Without someone to listen, there would beno story.

As a director, I am thankful for this process of over 5 years and to those who have taught me that listening is the art.

In the theatre, we come to share stories. We hope this one touches and engages you.

Message from the artistic Directors

Message from the Director

If I had to sum up what I’ve learned from working on Iceland, it would be to strive for simplicity.

Ravi and I discovered this for ourselves while working on Greenland in 2009. Throughout the rehearsal process, we whittled everything (text, acting, design, direction down to the essential. It was terrifying, and yet, ultimately, gratifying.

This approach continues with Iceland. It is drama without spectacle: there is a narrative and an actor; together they must work to connect (we hope!) with their audience. My deepest gratitude to the artists listed in the production credits. Their insight, feedback, and suggestions have made Iceland all the better.
