    Iceland HistoryIceland was founded by the Vikings. The

    Scandinavians were the first to settle in Iceland in 870.

    Later Iceland was ruled also by the Norwegians andthe Danes.

    Iceland became independent from the Kingdom of

    Denmark in 1918 and is a republic since 1944.

    Iceland Geography

    Iceland is covered by ice, glaciers andgeysers and has got more than 20 activevolcanoes.

    Vatnajokull - the largest volcano and

    covers 8% of the country.

    The country lies on two tectonic plates alongwhich the volcanoes are located:

    the Eurasian North American plates

    The lava which came from the volcanoes on the

    plate borders formed the island.

    Surtsey the last addition to the islands and is located30km off the main island.

    There are also many waterfalls, hot springs, mudpools and geothermal vents, where the heat of theearth comes out from the earth surface.

    The energy of the Iceland volcanoes and vents is used bygeothermal power stations and supplies the heating toaround 85% of all households.

    The Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Station services the GreaterReykjavk Area's hot water and electricity needs. Virtually all of Iceland'selectricity comes from renewable resources

    Most Icelanders do not have a family name orsurname, they take on their fathers name. So if the

    father is called Jakob, the daughter is given a firstname for example Eva and then the fathers namewith an addedsdottir and is then calledJakobsdottir (Jakobs daughter), so we would call

    her: Eva Jakobsdottir. For sons they just addsson:which would make the boy called Adam Jakobsson.

    Iceland has got somefarmland where you will see

    many sheep as they are themost common farm animals inIceland.

    in large colonies on cliffs.

    Education in IcelandThe Ministry of Education, Science and Culture is

    responsible for the policies and methods that schools mustuse, and they issue the National Curriculum Guidelines.However, playschools, primary schools, and lowersecondary schools are funded and administered by themunicipalities. The government does allow citizensto Home educate their children, however under a very

    strict set of demands. Students must stick to thegovernment mandated curriculum, the parent teachingmust acquire a government approved teachingcertificate. The Icelanders do not have to pay school feesas all education is free of charge.

    Iceland Food

    The Icelandic main dishes contain: lamb,seafood and dairy products.

    The bread you will get in Iceland is mostlydark rye bread or rye flat bread, which is verytasty too and you definitely should try thedelicious Kleina pastries.

    Reindeer meat is also available in Iceland, but is quiteexpensive.

    Other interesting Island facts regarding typical Icelandic food:

    One specialty in Iceland which takes a bit to get used to is"Hakarl" which is rotten shark meat and it smells quite strongly.

    Skyr: yogurt like white cheese a bit like low fat creamcheese or quark

    Dried fish: usually haddock, cod or catfish

    Porrablot: mid winter feast
