    Web Searching

Searching the Web is not easy. There is alot of junk out there, and it can befrustrating to sift through it all. I wouldimagine you have tried to use the searchengines like Google, yahoo, Alta Vista orLycos, and have run into the fact that its

difficult to easily find the information youneed

    Phrase Searching

Phrase searching is the most powerful ofthe combination techniques, and youshould always use it if possible. When youare creating your search terms, if there arewords that usually go together in a phrase, you can indicate that by placing them in

quotes (such as "PC-Compatiblecomputer" or "Scott Nicholson").

    27/32

    27

    Boolean Logic

This is placing the words AND, OR, andNOT to indicate a relationship between thesearch terms for the web database.

AND - By putting the word AND betweentwo terms, you are telling the database"I want to find pages that have both ofthese terms. For example "buy" AND "PC "

    28/32

    28

    Pseudo-Boolean Logic

Many of the search engines allow "naturallanguage" searching, which involves twosymbols, + and - for psuedo-boolean operations. If you include a - before a search term or phrase,it means that the term should NOT be in all sites

that are returned. It's similar to the BooleanNOT.If you include a + before a search term or aphrase, it means that the term MUST be in allsites that are returned. It's very similar to aBoolean ANDE.g +"Scott Nicholson"

    29/32

    29

    Term Weighting

The final thing you can do to combine yourterms is to weight them. By "weighting",you're telling the search engine that someterms are more important to you thanother terms. In our example, we might feelthat "Pentium" is more important than the

rest of the terms, and while they are stillimportant, we really need to make sure it'sgot "Pentium".

    Steps to using Search Engines

Specify and Simplify your search request.Break the request up into search facets.Develop synonyms for each facet.

Create phrases when possible.Link the synonyms for each facet together withOR, and link the facets together with AND.Go through at least 50 results before startingagain.Use pages that are similar to the one you want fornew synonyms and facets to add.
