WHAT IS SOFTWARE?

• is a collection of instructions that enable the user to interact with a computer, its hardware, or perform tasks. Without software, computers would be useless.

Page 3: Ict microsoft office

Examples and types of software

• Antivirus– AVG– McAfee

• Google Chrome• Microsoft Office

– Word– Excel– Powerpoint, etc.

• VLC• Movie Maker

How do you get software?

• Software can be purchased at a retail computer store or online and come in a box containing all the disks (floppy diskette, CD, DVD, or Blu-ray), manuals, warranty, and other documentation.

• Software can also be downloaded to a computer over the Internet. Once downloaded, setup files are run to start the installation process on your computer.

Free software• Shareware or trial software is software that gives you a

few days to try the software before you have to buy the program. After the trial time expires, you'll be asked to enter a code or to register the product before you can continue to use it.

• Freeware is completely free software that never requires payment, as long as it is not modified.

• Open source software is similar to freeware. Not only is the program given away for free, but the source code used to make the program is as well, allowing anyone to modify the program or view how it was created.

Page 6: Ict microsoft office

How do you use computer software?

• Once the software has been installed on to your computer hard drive, the program can be used anytime by finding the program on the computer. On a Windows computer, a program icon is added to the Start Menu or Start Screen, depending on your version of Windows.

Page 7: Ict microsoft office

How to maintain software

• After the software has been installed on your computer it may need to be updated to fix any found errors. Updating a program can be done using software patches. Once updates are installed any problems that may have been experienced in the program will no longer occur.

Page 8: Ict microsoft office

How is software created and how does it work?

• A computer programmer (or several computer programmers) write the instructions using a programming language that tell the software how to function and what to do. Once the program has been completed, it is compiled into a language that the computer can understand.

Operating System•  or OS is a software on the hard drive that

enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless.

• William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate, investor, author and philanthropist. In 1975, Gates and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft, which became the world's largest PC software company.

MAC OS• Aqua GUI — Apple's graphical user interface is a highly-iterated facet of the

operating system, designed to be a tactile, intuitive and highly-responsive user experience.

• Automator — A system utility for automating tasks in the organizational context of a workflow.

• Dashboard — A workspace of configurable widgets including sticky notes, news tickers, weather apps, and a standard and scientific calculator. Mission

• Control —Each window can be viewed in realtime as an icon, and the Mission Control interface allows users to quickly navigate and control running applications across multiple virtual desktops.

• FileVault — Provides control of disk encryption, vital in corporate settings. • Screen Sharing — When enabled, allows remote users to view or control the

machine. Compatible with standard VNC clients. • Time Machine — Automated file backup service with chronological

revision control and a highly-developed visualized metaphor. When using Time Machine to view the history of your backups, the folders and files scroll forward and backward through time like a circular card file or rolodex.

Windows 7• is a personal computer operating system

developed by Microsoft. It is a part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. Windows 7 was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and became generally available on October 22, 2009, less than three years after the release of its predecessor, Windows Vista. Windows 7's server counterpart, Windows Server 2008 R2, was released at the same time.

Windows 8•  is a personal computer operating system

developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. Development of Windows 8 started before the release of its predecessor, Windows 7, in 2009. It was announced at CES 2011, and followed by the release of three pre-release versions from September 2011 to May 2012. The operating system was released to manufacturing on August 1, 2012, and was released for general availability on October 26, 2012

Microsoft Office• is an office suite of applications, servers,

and services developed by Microsoft. It was first announced by Bill Gates on 1 August 1988, at COMDEX in Las Vegas. Initially a marketing term for a bundled set of applications, the first version of Office contained Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Page 22: Ict microsoft office

• The most current desktop version is Office 2016 for Windows and macOS, released on 22 September 2015.

Page 23: Ict microsoft office

Microsoft Word• is a word processor available for Windows and

OS X. Word is also included in some editions of the now discontinued Microsoft Works. The first version of Word, released in the autumn of 1983, was for the MS-DOS operating system and had the distinction of introducing the mouse to a broad population.
