17th-22nd September 2017

ICTP, the ‘Olympic games of metal forming’ was founded in 1984, has been held every three years since, and is one of the biggest international events in forming technology. The 12th ICTP, the first to be held in the United Kingdom, builds on a long tradition of excellence:

Tokyo, Japan (1984) Stuttgart, Germany (1987) Kyoto, Japan (1990) Beijing, China (1993) Columbus, OH, USA (1996) Erlangen, Germany (1999)

Yokoyama, Japan (2002) Verona, Italy (2005) Gyeongju, Korea (2008) Aachen, Germany (2011) Nagoya, Japan (2014)

The programme will cover all major areas of the technology and science of metal forming, including:

Forming processes – from unprecedented innovations to extensions to today’s industrial practice

Materials characterisation and testing – from the most familiar to the newest materials at multiple scales, temperatures, and to the limits of deformation

Surfaces – the latest science and newest practice in lubrication, tribology and wear

Simulation – the prediction of process behaviour, from the finest detail to the fastest calculation

Control – of temperature, properties, energy and the efficiency of the whole forming supply chain.

ICTP is where the world’s leading researchers share their most important advances, where theory meets advanced practice and where the insights of the most experienced practioners become the inspiration for the next generation.

Conference Proceedings

Authors are invited to propose abstracts for the conference using the online submission system which will be open from 15th November 2016 to 10th January 2017. Authors will be notified about the suitability of their proposal shortly after the closing date, and if appropriate will be invited to prepare a full paper for submission by 1st March. Full papers will be subject to two independent reviews by members of the International Scientific Committee, and selected papers will be invited for presentation at the conference. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings in Procedia, indexed in Scopus and the proceedings will be submitted to the Science Citation Index. By special arrangement, authors of the highest quality papers will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers to the Journal of Materials Processing Technology. Authors may also propose posters as an alternative to full papers.

The online submission system is available via the conference website at www.ictp2017.org

Conference organisation

The 12th ICTP is being organised by the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, under the chairmanship of Professor Julian M Allwood.

12th ICTP at the University of CambridgeAccompanying people

Cambridge is a wonderful city to visit, and a great base for exploring England’s most characterful destinations. We are offering a specially designed programme of visits for accompanying people – who can join the social programme of the conference in the evenings, but spend their days exploring with our specially planned programme.

An introductory tour of Cambridge A day in London, taking in sights including Buckingham Palace A visit to the wool towns of East Anglia - until the 17th

century the East of England was famous for the weaving, dying and spinning of wool, which brought great riches to successful land owners and merchants. You can see the legacy of this wealth in now quiet, small towns and villages.

A trip to two lovely attractions just outside Cambridge: Wimpole Estate - this grand estate features an impressive Georgian mansion set in beautiful gardens. Ely Cathedral - long before the University made Cambridge famous, Ely was the most important town in the area.

About Cambridge

The University of Cambridge, one of the world’s leading universities, whose members have won 96 Nobel Prizes, has a long connection with the science and technology of metal forming: Newton, Green and Young laid the foundations for today’s analysis in Cambridge, and in the 20th Century, Hopkinson, Taylor, Stokes, Orowan, Johnson, Hill, Tabor and Ashby explored the basis of material characterisation, friction, process analysis and the mechanisms of plastic deformation here.

Cambridge is a thriving university city and a world-renowned centre of academic excellence. It is a successful innovation cluster, comprising several multi-billion companies and numerous smaller enterprises and start-ups.

The city is characterised by the magificent buildings of the old University Colleges, and is surrounded by green spaces and parks. Cycling is popular here as is punting on the River Cam, which winds right through the city centre.

Accommodation

The University of Cambridge has a unique collegiate structure. Students at the University belong to both departments and Colleges, receiving tuition in both, and living and learning in community in the historic College buildings. There can be no better way to experience the atmosphere of Cambridge, than to stay in one of these beautiful old Colleges. This is a unique opportunity to experience what life would have been like for Newton, Babbage or Rodney Hill, as they walked in quiet courts and gardens or breakfasted in the College Hall.

By special arrangement, we can share this collegiate experience with you. Some of the most historic Colleges offer accommodation to the standards of leading hotels, and delegates to ICTP may choose to stay in excellent refurbished, en-suite rooms in five of the Colleges. They will eat breakfast in the Colleges, and be able to walk in the footsteps of the University’s famous alumni, usually inaccessible to tourists in the city.

Registration and Accommodation

Staying in a Cambridge College

Hotels in Cambridge can be very expensive and so we have negotiated a special price for rooms in the colleges. These rooms are excellent value for city centre accommodation,

particularly given the unparalleled experience of experiencing Cambridge University ‘from the inside’.

The rooms can be selected and paid for as part of the registration process.
