As we prepare to embark on the Twenty20s, it is timely to reflect on the year that has just past and indeed the last decade. icubed entered 2010 with a degree of trepidation, enthusiasm and optimism.

2019 has been a rewarding year in many ways, with our staff expanding to hit the milestone of 50! By employing the best people, we ensure a commitment to meeting our exceptional standards while continuing to grow our office. This has also helped us deliver the highest recorded value in icubed’s operational history.

Buildings 2019 has seen icubed finalise work on three of our large industrial building sites across three states, totalling 19 000 m2 under roof and 35 000 m2 of external works. Each of these sites saw us flex our multidisciplinary capability, covering town planning, building and landscape design, structural, civil and hydraulic engineering, and project management. In addition to the larger industrial sites, we also completed designs of smaller buildings – up to 1500 m2 under roof. Due to our efficient design, these buildings were all tenanted within weeks of completion, which is a great outcome for our valued clients.

Our residential design sector has remained steady this year, with a few renovation projects in and around Brisbane also concluded. With client-focused results in mind, the team are busy realising and finalising existing building projects, and establishing more for 2020. Heather Anderson – Project Manager

Infrastructure - Civilicubed’s civil department has been kicking goals in 2019 continuing our growth within residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

This year we have proceeded with design, project management and site supervision roles within the agricultural sphere, residential aged care facilities, apartment buildings, industrial and residential subdivisions, warehouse and office developments, and studies for wind farm developments.

We have worked together with the multidisciplinary departments at icubed. Our main support role was with the planning and renewables teams on various development approval works for renewable energy projects.

During the year, our civil team took big steps to enrich their careers and broaden their knowledge. 2019 saw Travis Smith making great headway towards becoming a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), with Katherine Leggett and Josh Mason working towards attaining their Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ)status.

We would like to thank our valued long-term clients for their continual support over the past year, and look forward to getting dirty (earthworks), being under pressure (water), staying out of the muck (sewers), keeping our eyes on the road (roadworks)and going with the flow (stormwater) in 2020!

Infrastructure - Structural

icubed’s structural division has made some great progress in 2019, both nationally and internationally. In Australia, we commenced the year with a number of road bridge designs for private and public clients. These varied from designs incorporating fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, to feasibility studies for future bridge replacement works, utilising FRP, concrete or steel components. We also performed over-size-over-mass vehicle load testing of three existing road bridges in Central Queensland.

One of the more exciting international projects we have had the opportunity to work on this year was a new two-kilometre-long FRP boardwalk in Abu Dhabi. This structure consisted of pedestrian viewing towers and point-of-interest nodes to explain the surrounding environment to visitors. icubed were involved with the detailed design of the project and also had the opportunity to undertake a site visit and provide technical presentations for the client in Abu Dhabi.

Additionally, there has been strong interest from the USA market for longer span footbridges and icubed completed preliminary designs on 49 m and 67 m single spans, using FRP materials. 2019 also saw icubed work on our first cable-stayed pedestrian bridge design using FRP components in Nova Scotia, Canada, as well as detailed designs on a number of FRP pedestrian footbridges in the USA, including Washington DC, Kansas and California.

This year we have also invested time in designing and presenting alternative solutions for longer span jetty structures for the overseas export jetty market, using FRP materials. This has primarily been aimed at the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, with additional cryogenic testing performed on FRP materials, and confirmation of a 100-year-design life for these structures, with minimal operating expense costs.

Amongst all of this, icubed engaged in work on bridge and wharf projects in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, as well as various international design standards. In Australia, we undertook numerous public infrastructure projects, including boardwalk and bridge designs completed for Townsville, Mackay, Airlie Beach, Coffs Harbour, Brisbane, Ballina, Cairns, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, South West Rocks, Lizard Island and South Australia.

Beyond the day-to-day projects, the structural design team have increased in capacity, with eight fulltime qualified engineers, five of whom are chartered with Engineers Australia, and also four structural drafters, all delivering our continued high quality standard of work.

Risk and Environmental

It has been another eventful year for the risk and environment team. We have enjoyed a variety of stimulating work, spanning the renewables sector, new industrial developments, existing major hazard facilities, and improvements to the operations of manufacturing sites.

The risk and environment team have continued to work closely with the town planning team to obtain development approval for projects across Australia, including Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland. Highlighting the year was the government approval of the Kingaroy Wind Farm, comprising 16 wind turbines and 64 MW, located west of Kingaroy, Queensland. The successful project involved collaboration across the icubed teams. The team contributed to the approval through preparation of supporting documentation, including an environmental management plan, bushfire management plan and vegetation clearing application. Construction of this fantastic project is set for next year and we are excited to be able to continue working with the project developers to increase Queensland’s renewable energy generation portfolio.

We have continued to assist our valued clients with operational reviews of their sites, improving efficiency while reducing risks and environmental impacts. This has included work for major hazard facilities — sites where large quantities of hazardous materials are stored, handled or processed — preparing safety cases and conducting periodic site assessments. Improvements to another site included concurrent modification of their environmental licence and rehabilitation of part of the site as they ceased older operations and improved their environmental compliance.

The risk and environment team look forward to the challenges that 2020 will bring. We welcome the opportunities to continue to support our clients with their projects and to strive towards good environmental outcomes that we can all be proud of. We wish all our clients, colleagues and contacts a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Renewables

2019 has been another busy year for the renewables team as Australia made one big final push to achieve the Australian government’s 2020 large-scale renewable energy target (RET) – a goal successfully achieved! icubed were fortunate that one of our wind farm projects was deemed by the Australian Clean Energy Regulator to be the project that provided the final load of 33 000 GWh.

While 2018 saw our first serious commitment to the international wind sector, 2019 witnessed icubed secure two separate detailed design contracts for wind farm projects abroad, triggering the need to establish the icubed consulting New Zealand Limited Partnership.

As the design phase of these projects evolves into construction, icubed will have a fulltime presence on the North Island of New Zealand, commencing early 2020. Pending our success on further projects, we are excited to extend this presence to the South Island, hopeful for a wind farm development near the ski fields!

Over the course of the year we have helped existing clients and completed some rather challenging jobs, while always remaining on the lookout for the next adventure.

Leaving the comforts of our city offices behind, one of our engineers experienced the wide desert of Western Australia, a mere 16 hours’ drive from Perth; another spent time on our South Australian projects, which boasted being in the hottest part of the globe for a day; and others, on a third project in Tasmania, had to melt snow off the reinforcement before foundation pours could commence. We live in a country of contrasts!

We have also continued to finish a number of consent approvals for wind and solar farms, including Queensland’s Kingaroy Wind Farm and Jimbour Solar Farm, as well as assisting our clients to select/de-risk their projects at the initial scoping phase, through identifying constraints and providing solutions to increasingly complex wind and solar sites.

The renewables industry has, as has our team, faced a great number of challenges during the year. With the RET now complete, the industry is currently commencing a new and interesting phase — the technology is getting better, electrical infrastructure is reaching capacity and coal fired generators are approaching the end of their design life.

While it would be incredible to have a crystal ball and know exactly where we are headed, we’ll instead take comfort in knowing that every farm needs a new road and every turbine needs a foundation!

Team - 3

2019 was another big year for the icubed team, with the arrivalof fresh faces, one returning face, new roles and even a baby! This year we have welcomed eight additional team members to our engineering and drafting divisions, including the return of structural engineer Aaron Farrell. We also welcomed back our lead town planner, Elizabeth Cruice, who in July, with husband Brett, became proud parents of our first icubed baby, James. Special mention must go to Sandra Mantelatto, who has moved from document control to civil designer. Sandra has a degree in agricultural engineering from Brazil and we are thrilled to have her working and sharing her passion for sciences. It’s always wonderful to see our long-term staff and new colleagues sharing knowledge, experiences and enthusiasm for our work.

With a team often positioned all over Australia, it is important to bring everyone together for some well earned downtime. This year we took on the challenge of lawn bowls. A fantastic afternoon was spent at the Toowong Bowls Club, although it is fair to say that no-one will be donning the green and gold at next year’s Olympic Games.

More team recreation came in the form of dragon boating, which has become an annual event for icubed. Our team ‘Dragon Cubed Zs’ again raced in the Corporate Games. This year there was high drama on the water as a rival team steered across Dragon Cubed Z’s path. Paddles clashed, and each team fought valiantly to maintain its lead and remain upright. While not coming out completely unscathed, the contenders

did at least manage to remain relatively dry this year — a win in itself for those who were having traumatic flashbacks to last year’s cold topple into the Brisbane River.

Without a doubt, this year has flown by and we are very much looking forward to the new and exciting projects and opportunities ahead in 2020. From the whole icubed family, we wish our clients, colleagues and friends all the best for the coming year.
