2. ID Mission My goal was to construct an identity as an aspiringfilmmaker that would be taken seriously in a professionalcontext. I also wanted to create contacts with peoplehigher up in the ranks than me so that I could line upfuture work. I figured my original Facebook would not bea good domain as the social stigma attached is toorobust. This is why I chose LinkedIn and ABC Pool as myprimary platforms for my Professional ID as they arerenowned for their professionalism and emphasis onproducing work. Twitter was also utilised as a secondarysource in terms of increasing audience more efficiently. 3. Character and Personality Twitter- witty, concise and to the point. Will enable cyberdrifters to attain some sense of my personality. ABC Pool- used more seriously than twitter, mainly because itis a platform for work, and for me that will involve thecharacter and personality of someone aspiring to be part ofthe film industry i.e. creative, eccentric, opinionated etc. LinkedIn- the most serious of them all, will merely be utilisedto network with others professionally and present my work.The character and personality of this ID will not extendbeyond the work and credentials on it. 4. The information asked to fill inclearly tailors towards aLinkedIn IDprofessional platform, with anemphasis on education andpast/current workingexperience. This suits myneeds as my goal is to presentthe professional Ned. LinkedInis also great as automaticallysynchronises itself with twitter,providing more numbers!Also provides me with userswith the same goal.Automatically tracked downrelevant people that I alreadyknow through Media.Provides a platform to submitmy work in an environmentwhere it is taken moreseriously than Facebook. 5. ABC Pool Specificity is alsoanother factor as towhy it suits myneeds, even moreso than LinkedIn -because itimmerses me withina media milieu; onevery relevant to myfuture line of work.Suits my needs of beingtaken seriously as afuture filmmaker as Ican create a persona byuploading photos likethese. The people andthe environment is whatis most pivotal, as I amconfident the people areparticipating in apositive manner. 6. TwitterAlthough not vital toconstructing a filmmakeridentity, twitter helped meimmensely in terms ofsupplying more traffic toLinkedIn and ABC Pool. Thiswas needed (especially withPool) because it didnt havesuch a large contingent liketwitter, meaning peoplewho wouldnt haveaccessed it otherwise did.Here are two goodexamples of myshameless self-promotion/advertising. 7. Relevance of my online communities What communities/groups? Freelance media communities (ABC Pool), workforcecommunities (LinkedIn), My Tribe IM2 (ABC Pool),University peers (Twitter). Why? The main reason why these communities are of valueto me is because they include a lot of people that Ican learn from. This can come in the form of eithercritiquing uploaded work, as well as being offeredwork that will hopefully aid my learning to. 8. How and what I learnt from Twittercommunity How I learnt? The way I learnt about the twitter community was reasonablysimple, besides doing the obvious and tweeting and followingas many people as possible, I also sought help from friendswho were much more apt than I. What I learnt? Rules: never tag yourself in your own post (appears self-centred), spam is a no go as well as: impersonation, copyright,violence and threats. Norms: hash tagging, abbreviations, hyperlinks. Values: humour and playful wit, collaboration, ease ofconnectivity. 9.
