The survey was applied to a target group of 409 Portuguese parents and 495 Romanian parents.

Overall the results proved to be very similar in both countries.

The major differences mirrored by the survey refer to the time spent online /on the computer and the autonomy of the use of the computer/ the internet.

In both countries, most parents involved in the survey are female and their ages comprised between 31 and 45 years.

Most of the parents that have answered the survey in both countries have graduated from high school/secondary school. The second biggest number of Portuguese parents is made of people that have a diploma from university or that have only graduated from a primary school, whereas in Romania the second biggest number of parents refers to those that have graduated from a professional school or have a mastership diploma.

Over 90% of both Portuguese and Romanian parents own a computer at home. Not all of them have got Internet service though. In Romania, 85% of the parents answered that they are connected to the Internet, whereas 95% of the Portuguese parents have got an Internet service.

The survey has showed that not all parents are using the computer on a regular basis. 84% of the Romanian parents use the computer about 3 times a week, whereas only 65% of the Portuguese parents do this on the same time frame.

The answers of both Romanian and Portuguese parents have emphasised the use of the Internet on a regular basis. 85% of the Romanian parents confessed they use the Internet more than 3 times a week. Only 63% of the Portuguese parents said that they do that.

Both Portuguese and Romanian parents use the computer/ the internet at home, but they do it for different purposes. 67% of the Romanian parents use it for entertainment, and 33% for work reasons. 48% of the Portuguese parents have professional reasons to use the computer/ the internet at home, while 37% do it for entertainment.

In both countries most of the parents surveyed said that on a scale from 1 to 5 their computer skills fall on a level three.

Most of Portuguese parents believe that access should be granted with info cafés and web points of free public use and that Town Halls and Autarchies should educate their citizens on the New Information Technologies free of charge, whereas the greatest number of Romanian parents interviewed (40%) feel that public authorities should offer free education to citizens; the second biggest group of these parents (18%) also refer the free web points and info cafés as an important weapon in the fight against info-exclusion which Town Halls and Autarchies should resort to.

5. At the moment if all the administrative form filled in at the City Hall yearly at the Police should be filled in on line on the computer, could you do it without any help?

One of the biggest differences spotted between the Romanian and Portuguese parents is connected to the autonomy of the use of the computer. When asked if they can fill in all the administrative form at the City Hall/ at the Police on line without any help, 65% of Romanian parents answered negatively, while 61% of the Portuguese parents answered positively.
