Seven Principles to Help
Researchers Think in New WaysSchool, family, community partnership:
• share responsibility for students’ learning and development
• is a multidimensional Concept
• is an essential component of school and classroom organization
• require multilevel leadership
• must include a focus on increasing student learning and
development
• are about equity
• must continue to improve
School, family, and community partnerships is a better
terms than parental involvement to recognize that
parents, educators, and others in the community share
responsibility for students’ learning and development
• Students learn more when parents, educators and
others in community work together to guide and
support students learning and development( Epstein,
1987,2001)
• “Professional community” may mange their schools
differently from administrators who view schools as full
“learning communities”( Epstein,2001)

Successful Partnerships
A program of School, family, and community
partnerships is an essential component of
school and classroom organization
• Leadership
• Teamwork
• Action plan
• Implementation of plan
• Funding
• Collegial support
• Evaluation
• Networking
Eight essential “elements” fro effective school program:
A program of School, family, and community
partnerships require multilevel leadership.
Multilevel leadership supports the view that family and
community involvements is part of organization, as
district leaders help coordinate and facilitate the smooth
operation of all school with district
The quality of district partnership programs was affected
by the leaders’ years of experience and time spent on
partnerships.
A program of School, family, and community partnerships must
include a focus on increasing student learning and development
Family and community involvements affects not only students
achievement, but also students health, attitude, and
behaviors(Epstein 2001; Hill and Craft, 2003)
Types of involvement
Subject specific goals for Students
The challenge of Conducting Studies of interventions
The Challenges of Isolating effects of partnerships
The challenges of explaining negative results
All program of School, family, and community
partnerships are about equity
Parents involvement programs must include all families,
Program quality and the actions taken at home are as or
more important than family background variables such
as face, ethnicity, social class, marital status, mother’s
education or work status,
Methods of research on School, family, and
community partnerships must continue to
improve
Moving from exploratory and descriptive studies to confirmatory and
target evaluation
• Experiments and Matched examples
• Well- specified multivariate models
• Multilevel analyses
• Small in-depth studies
Conclusion
New ways about the structures and processes of family
and community involvements that will help educators,
parents, and community partners work more
systemically, organizationally, and collaboratively to
support students. It will also help researchers improve
policy and practice.
