• Did you know…• The person that earns $200,000.00 doesn’t work twice as hard as the person that earns $100,000.00 per year?
• …or twice as long• The difference is in WHAT is being done!
• Professional Golf Match
• Horse Race
• The Difference is called: The Slight Edge!
• Capture the ideas that will work for you, then put them into practice! TODAY!

Ah – Ha…
• What is the best idea from each slide?
• How will you use that idea NOW?
• Can you involve others in the implementation of the new idea?

Low Morale? Let’s Look at How we Hire…
• One of the best ways to avoid low morale is to hire properly
• Nothing is worse than a person leaving a job for a better opportunity, only to find, it’s not what they thought…. In other words, did we define the new job properly?

Low Morale? Let’s Look at How we Hire…
• Ask questions specific to the job you are hiring for
• Has the person ever done this kind of work prior?
• Does your company use any type of predictive indicator of employment success? Assessments?
Anyone can behave any way that you would like them to…for an hour!

How Your Style of Leadership Affects Morale
• There are three main styles of leadership:• Autocratic• Democratic
• Free‐rein
One of these styles is probably your natural style. Each style can have a different affect on morale.
Let’s look at each individually…

5
Autocratic Leadership
• Hired Hands.
• It’s my way or the highway.
• Here’s how I want it done.
Pros:• When tasks MUST be completed one way• Great for new hires• Non responsive employees
Cons:• Employees may feel marginalized• They may stop thinking• May always look to you for the answers
Intelligent Motivation, Inc. Enhancing Careers, One Idea at a Time
Democratic Leadership
• Consensus is the key
• Majority rules
• Can be political
Pros• Works well with seasoned staff• Allows managers to focus on broader issues• Opens issues up for broader discussion
Cons• May form factions• Some employees may be looking for
leadership• Can lead to some employees shutting down
Intelligent Motivation, Inc. Enhancing Careers, One Idea at a Time
6
Free‐Rein Leadership
• Also called Country Club Style Leadership
• Do whatever you think is correct
• Works well with highly experienced, self disciplined workers
Intelligent Motivation, Inc. Enhancing Careers, One Idea at a Time
Pros• Allows very good employees to try
different approaches• Promotes creativity• Can be very motivational
Cons• Very easy to take advantage of• Managers may lose control• Consensus may be difficult to reach
Autocratic, Democratic, Free‐Rein, what is the best style?• You have a natural style • Do you know what it is?• The best style is a blend of all three• But, you need to know when to use the correct style
Intelligent Motivation, Inc. Enhancing Careers, One Idea at a Time
• Autocratic – New employees; employees who are not doing what they should be doing
• Democratic – If team values and norms are needed to drive cooperation to produce results
• Free‐Rein – When the situation calls for highly creative solutions put forth by highly creating employees
7
Performance Feedback and Employee Morale
• PF’s should enhance morale, not detract from it
• The old rule: Nothing new in a PF
• Write an employee’s PF with morale in mind
Intelligent Motivation, Inc. Enhancing Careers, One Idea at a Time
Some how to’s:
• If your company allows it, keep a yearly file• Catch employees “doing something right”• Use attachments with an employee’s PR
Creating a Pro Morale Environment
• Environment/culture are created by management
• Everyone is responsible for its maintenance
• Consistency is the key • It is always changing, thus we are always responsible for the outcome
Intelligent Motivation, Inc. Enhancing Careers, One Idea at a Time
Some ideas for creating a pro morale environment:
• Celebrate employees successes• Communicate positives across your employees• Give on‐going feedback• Involve employees in departmental decisions• Offer interesting/different work assignments
8
Terminating the Non Responsive Employee
• Know when to begin the progressive discipline process• Find out why the employee is not responsive
• Perhaps then need to excel somewhere else
• Get HR involved
