C’est sous la tutelle de Carlos Idibouo, membre du Conseil d’Administration de FrancoQueer et Coordonnateur des interventions et des programmes de Action Positive VIH/Sida de Toronto, que cette rencontre a été lancée.

C’est avec émotion que l’assemblée a marqué pendant une minute de silence son soutien aux victimes de la fusillade d’Orlando, l’un des événements récents qui ne fait que mettre en lumière, une fois de plus, les haines multiples, dangereuses et stigmatisantes existantes encore à l’encontre des membres de la communauté LGBTQIA+.

Dans son discours d’introduction, Jeanne Françoise Mouè, directrice générale de la Maison d’Hébergement pour Femmes Francophones et leurs enfants victimes de violence conjugale et familiale de Toronto, a notamment rappelé le devoir d’inclusivité imputable à tous les organismes travaillant par et pour les femmes, à savoir la nécessité d’agir et de servir la population sans égards aux questions de provenance, origine, culture, culte, parcours, orientation sexuelle, identité ou expression du genre.

The meeting was opened by Carlos Idibouo, Member of FrancoQueer’s Board of Directors and Coordinator of Interventions and Programs for Positive Action HIV/AIDS in Toronto.

It was with great emotion that the audience observed a minute of silence as a token of respect and sympathy for the victims of the Orlando shooting, one of the latest and significant events that highlights, once again, a multi-faceted, dangerous and stigmatizing hate against the members of the LGBTQIA Community.

In her introductory speech, Jeanne Françoise Mouè, the general director of La Maison, an emergency shelter for Francophone women and their children, victims of domestic and family violence, poignantly restated the importance of inclusion within every organization that works for and by women, each must understand the necessity of interacting and serving the population without any question as to where they came from, origin, culture, religion, personal journey, sexual orientation, identity or expression thereof.

Françoise Susset, psychologue clinicienne, thérapeute conjugale et familiale avec plus de 25 ans d’expérience dans le travail auprès des individus, des couples et des familles LGBT s’intéresse tout particulièrement à l’évaluation et au suivi clinique des adultes et des adolescents trans, durant et au-delà de la transition.

Membre de l’Institut pour la Santé des Minorités Sexuelles de Montréal, elle est revenue pour nous, lors de cette conférence, sur les définitions et concepts fondamentaux liés à l’expression et à l’identité du genre, afin de mieux aborder la [les] réalité.s transgenre.s.

Françoise Susset nous rappelle que ce qui définit un être humain n’est pas seulement une question de «ce qui parait être» ou de l’apparence d’une identité du genre Male ou Femelle, mais est surtout dépendant de constitutions biologiques et génétiques bien plus complexes que ce que nous pensons.

En l’espace d’une heure, Françoise Susset déconstruira les principes d’identités binaires (masculin et féminin), attribuées à la naissance, pour nous faire découvrir qu’à travers territoires et époques, l’Humanité a connu et connait encore la multitude des genres.

C’est à travers cette mise en perspective, qu’elle nous décrira aussi les différences de définitions à intégrer lorsque l’on parle de sexe biologique, d’orientation sexuelle, d’identité et d’expression du genre ; notions pas obligatoirement et pas toujours interconnectées.

Plus qu’un appel à la tolérance, cette conférence est surtout un passionnant «cours de rattrapage» sur la manière de [re]définir mais aussi de cerner la pluralité des FemmeS et des HommeS, sur le chemin de leurs identités passées, présentes et en devenir.

Françoise Susset is a clinical psychologist and therapist to couples and families with over 25 years of experience working with LGBT populations. Her clinical work centers on trans adults and teens, during transition and beyond.

Member of the Institute for Sexual Minority Health of Montréal, she recontextualized, at this conference, the basic definitions and concepts related to the expression and gender identity, in order to better address trans realities.

Françoise Susset reminded us that what defines a Human Being is not only a question of «what it seems to be» or the appearance of a M or F Gender Identity. It is a process way more complex than we think and that really depends on biological and genetic constructions.

Within an hour, Françoise Susset deconstructed the standards of binary identities (male and female), assigned at birth, to demonstrate that through territories and times, Humanity has known and still knows a wide variety of genders.

Using this perspective, she described main definitions to keep in mind when we talk about biological sex, sexual orientation, identity and gender expression ; concepts not necessarily and not always interdependent.

More than a call for acceptance, this conference was mostly a fascinating «make-up class» on how to [re]define and to better identify the plural nature of Women and Men, through their past, present and future identities.

En clôture de conférence, nous avons accueilli l’honorable Cheri DiNovo, MPP Highpark-Parkdale et Sasha Cragg-Gore, avocat au Centre Francophone de Toronto pour un panel de discussion et une session de questions-réponses.

Cheri DiNovo, appuyée par Sasha Cragg-Gore, est revenue sur le projet de loi C-16 dont l’objectif est d’intégrer la diversité du genre en amendement au Code des droits de la Personne Canadien. Bien que teinté d’une certaine évolutivité fédérale dans la reconnaissance des individus transgenres, ce projet demeure limité, car touche seulement 6% de la population et ne concerne pas encore toutes les provinces et domaines d’activités publics du Canada. Cheri DiNovo a ainsi voulu être claire sur cet aspect du projet restant, à ce jour, en cours d’adoption au Sénat.

Sasha Cragg-Gore a quant à lui abordé les moyens de protection et de recours juridiques pour la communauté trans, en rappelant que toute province, qu’elle bénéficie ou non d’un système de reconnaissance explicite, est en mesure de travailler à la défense des droits des personnes transgenres en usant des lois visant à lutter contre la discrimination sexuelle et/ou basée sur le genre. Il a aussi souligné, à juste titre, que bien que limité, le projet de loi C-16 revêt une valeur hautement symbolique car il porte la question de la diversité du genre à un niveau fédéral.

At the end of the conference, welcomed the honorable Cheri DiNovo, MPP for High Park-Parkdale and Sasha Cragg-Gore, a lawyer at the Centre Francophone - Toronto for a panel discussion and a series fo questions and answers.

Cheri DiNovo, supported by Sasha Cragg-Gore, returned to the subject of Bill C-16, the law that has for objective the integration of gender diversity in the form of amendments to the Canadian Charter of Human Rights.

Although it suggests a certain evolution in the position of the Federal government through the acknowledgement of transgendered peoples, this project remains limited in scope. In that, it only applies to 6% of the population and does not yet hold power in every province and public domains and activities across Canada. In returning to discuss this particular bill, Cheri DiNovo highlighted and sought to clarify any misunderstandings about the project, which is to date, in the process of being reviewed by the Senate.

Sasha Cragg-Gore then went on to speak about the legal means through which the trans community can protect itself, reminding us that every province, irrespective of an explicit system for recognition, is able to work to defend the rights of transgendered individuals by employing laws that fight against gender based or sexual discrimination.

Although limited in scope and reach, he also underscored the symbolic value of Bill C-16 because it broaches the question of diversity at a Federal level.

S’en est suivi la projection des deux premiers épisodes de la série «Je suis Trans», un Docu-réalité diffusé sur les ondes de MOI&cie le 7 janvier 2016, suivant quatre Québécois transgenres, tous rendus à différents stades de leur transition.

En 10 épisodes, le réalisateur Mathieu Baer aborde de façon authentique et très humaine la transidentité (ou une des manières d’être au monde), à travers les yeux de ceux qui la vivent.

Le documentaire présente Khloé, Jesyka, Alexis, Zacharry et Danielle, en abordant leurs vécus et leur quête d’une identité enfin en adéquation avec leurs ressentis passés et présents. Il suit aussi leur entourage, famille et amis, depuis leurs réactions face aux différents «coming out», jusqu’à l’acceptation d’une nouvelle identité, en passant par leurs questionnements et leur compréhension des moyens de transformation.

Une diffusion passionnante qui s’est terminée en beauté par une discussion avec Danielle, femme trans, aujourd’hui grande militante, qui consacre énormément de temps à défendre les différentes causes et situations que vivent les gens de la communauté trans. Depuis plus de 10 ans, elle est très impliquée au sein de l’ATQ (Aide aux trans du Québec). Danielle était accompagnée pour l’occasion d’un invité surprise, son conjoint Mathieu, homme trans. Tous deux ont pris le temps de répondre aux diverses questions de l’audience, en revenant à la fois, sur leurs parcours personnels et leurs ressentis à la suite de la diffusion du documentaire.

The discussion was followed by the first two episodes of the series “I am Trans”, a docu-reality which first aired on Moi&Cie on January 7th 2016 and follows the lives of four transgendered individuals from Québec who had all reached different stages in their transition.

Within the space of ten episodes, Mathieu Baer, the director, in very authentic and personable way, explores the transidentity (or one of the ways of being in the world) through the lens of those who are living these realities.

In the documentary we meet Khloé, Jesyka, Alexis, Zacharry and Danielle, as they come to terms with their individual experiences and their quests to align their identity with the ways they have experienced their genders in the past and currently. We also follow their day to day relationships as well as those with friends and family, from the time their friend or family member “came-out”, to the acceptation of the new identity, by exploring their questions and understandings of the intricacies of transformation.

The screening was passion-filled and was concluded in beauty by a discussion with Danielle, a trans woman, who is a hugely militant, and has devoted much of her time to advocating for the various causes and situations that people in the trans community face everyday.

For over ten years, she has been involved with ATQ, an organization that supports the Trans community in Quebec. During the conference, Danielle was accompanied by a special guest, her partner Mathieu, a trans man. The pair took time to respond to questions from the audience, and returned once again, to their individual journeys and their feelings following the release of the documentary.
