“ ”There is a falloff between signing up for IDNYC and redemption of the membership benefits.

David Strauss Deputy Director, Queens Museum

Problem Statement

IDNYC stops communication with card holders at the end of the application process, resulting in a fall off between receiving the card and taking advantage of the benefits it provides.

Problem Statement

By introducing an efficient way for card holders to discover cultural institutions and to promote visitorship, IDNYC will enjoy increased participation and institutions will receive increased engagement.

Executive Summary

Communication between IDNYC and card holders stops at the end of the application process. IDNYC has the opportunity to introduce a digital product that will provide an efficient way for card holders to discover cultural institutions and promote visitor interest, as well as providing increased musuem engagement.

• Of those surveyed, many have heard of IDNYC but failed to apply for the card.

• Of those who have received an IDNYC card, only a few have utilized benefits.

• Evaluation of the IDNYC sign up process showed that incremental improvements could be made, but overall people were able to easily apply for the card.

• Analysis of New York City resident behavior showed strong trends towards museum engagement.

• Our response facilitates redemption of IDNYC benefits through encouraging cultural instituitons discovery and participation with a digital product.

Competitive and Comparative AnalysisFeature Comparison

Competitive and Comparative AnalysisIDNYC vs. Ticket Packages

Technical Background ResearchPossible platformiOS Native Application

75% of interviewees used iPhones. In consideration of limited resources for a development team, budget, and timeline, we decided to introduce the product as a native iOS app, and roll out to web and Android as the program matures. We decided to prusue a mobile app over a website is because IDNYC holders need this experience to be accessible on-the-go; card holders will use this mobile app to access information on cultural institutions and special exhibitions as well as use it as a reminder throughout the day.

LimitationsBecause content on exhibitions and events is user generated and often requires a significant amount of effort to input, a desktop website could potentially be more suitable for that part of the experience.

Accessible information through APIsOn the institution information page, the app displays a Google map with the institution location pinned. When a user taps on that area, the app will launch the Google map application zoomed out to show user location in relation to the institution location.

Third Party ServicesWhen an user wants to submit an exhibition or event, the app will ask a user to sign in for credentials. Users will have an option to create an account, sign in, log in, or sign in using Facebook credentials.

Design StandardsThe app will adhere to material design guidelines for the visual elements, iOS HIG for behaviors, and natural interface designs on gestures and screen transitions.

User Research Process and TakewaysContextual Inquiry

The team visited an IDNYC application center and DMV l0ocation to perform a contextual inquiry. We analyzed the application process, application sheets, as well as interviewed applicants on site. Through this research process, we were able to gather some comparison analysis. The result is shown below.

IDNYC vs. DMV

User Research Process and TakewaysSurvey

• Of NYC residents surveyed, 73% have heard of IDNYC.• Of those, 76% did not apply.

- Main reason was because they did not have time to apply.• Of those who received a card, 88% have not used the card

- Main reason was because they did not have opportunity to use them / did not know about benefits.• Of those who heard of IDNYC, in the past year 97% visited a museum• And of those who went to museum last year, 69% of them went to museums 3 times or more.

After conducting 13 interviews, we analyzed our findings by separately affinity mapping IDNYC and museum data. Pain points caused by IDNYC were not due to lack of an application or solution, but rather caused with a poor level of execution. Secondly, we found that redemption of IDNYC benefits and turning those cardholders to institution visitors was a much better area to address for improvements.

IDNYC Museums

In the museum affinity mapping, our reserach showed that admission prices and what it means to IDNYC cardholders is important. Additionally, planning a visit to a musuem breaks into two major groups: a group that does not specifically plan what they want to see, and a group that actively seeks out and exclusively focuses on special exhibitions.

Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series and Other Works

In 1941, Jacob Lawrence, then just 23 years old, completed a series of 60 small tempera paintings with text captions about the Great Migration, the multi-decade mass movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North that started around 1915. Within months of its making, the series entered the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and the Phillips Memorial Gallery (today The Phillips Collection), with each institution acquiring half of the panels. Lawrence’s work is now an icon in both collections, a landmark in the history of modern art, and a key example of the way that history painting was radically reimagined in the modern era. One-Way Ticket: Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series and Other Visions of the Great Movement Northreunites all 60 panels for the first time at MoMA in 20 years.

The exhibition is accompanied by a book, Jacob Lawrence: The Migration Series, copublished with The Phillips Collection, Washington D.C. With the opening of the exhibition, MoMA has created a rich multimedia website that explores each of Lawrence’s Migration panels, accompanied by a range of visual, auditory, literary, and documentary materials. The exhibition is also accompanied by a film series in MoMA's theaters in June. Download a brochure of related programming.
