    INTRODUCTION

    APPLICATIONOVERVIEW

    Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) uses Ford proprietary software to run on a Windows based PC(Laptop,MiniLaptop,Desktop,Netbooks,etc.)withtheVehicleCommunicationModule(VCM),andtheVehicleMeasurementModule(VMM).

    NOTE:Throughout thismanual the term"VCM" refers toboth theVCMandVCM IIunlessspecific reference ismadetoaparticularinterfacedevice.Foradditionalinformation,seetheVCMorVCMIIHardwareManual.

    Acomprehensive, indepth tutorial, IDS trainingcourse isavailableonline (seeweb linksbelow).TheIDStrainingcoursecoversIDSinstallation,setup,updates,aswellasbasictoolfunctionsusingtheVCMandVMMindiagnosingvehiclesandmuchmore.

    TheVCMandVMMconnecttothePCusingthecustomEthernetUSBAdapterCable(H406/H416).TheVCMIIconnectstothePCusingacommerciallyavailableUSB2.0cable.

    VEHICLEINTERFACEDEVICES

    Thevehicleinterfacedevicesthatareusedwiththisapplicationare:

    Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) This device provides all link based functionality including:Datalogger,Selftest,ServiceFunctions,ModuleConfigurationandProgramming,etc.

    VehicleMeasurementModule(VMM)Thisdeviceprovidesthefollowingfunctionality:Oscilloscope,DigitalMultiMeter,IgnitionSystemTest,FuelSystemTest,andSGM.

    NOTE: Thesoftwareapplicationwilldetectthe interfacedevicethat isconnectedtothePC. Indicator iconswillappearatthebottomrighthandcorneroftheIDSscreenwhentheVCMand/orVMMareconnected.

    IDSSOFTWARELICENSE

    IDSSoftwareLicenseissubscriptionbased.

    MainpointsabouttheIDSSoftwareLicensingsubscription:

    The license subscription is for a fixed time period. When it expires, it will disable use of vehiclecommunicationsfunctionalitywithinIDS.

    ThelicenseisactivatedonacomputerusingIDSandisindependentfromtheVCM[i.e.,anyVCMmaybeused]

    EachcomputerrequiresalicensetouseIDSforvehiclecommunication Alicensecanonlybeusedononecomputeratatime AuniquelicenseActivationCodeisprovidedwitheachsoftwaresubscription.Thelicenseactivationcode

    isenteredinIDStoactivatethesoftwareshowninFigure1. Alicensemaybeactivatedusinganonlineorofflineprocess. Alicensecanbereturnedonlineandthenactivatedonadifferentcomputeronlineoroffline.Thisallows

    thelicensetobetransferredfromonecomputertoanother. AnactivelicenseautomaticallyvalidateswhenconnectedtotheInternet.Thevalidationiseffectivefor30

    dayswhetheronlineoroffline.

    TheIDSSoftwareLicenseactivationprocessconsistsoftwostepsasoutlinedintheIDSpopupscreeninFigure1.

    BeforeIDScanuseaVCMII,theIDSsoftwareversionandVCMIIsoftwareversionmustbecompatible.Iftheyarenotcompatible,oneofthefollowingtwocaseswillapply.

    CASEI:VCMIISOFTWAREVERSIONISOLDERTHANTHATREQUIREDBYIDS

    IDSwillnotifyyou if theVCM IIsoftwareversion isoutofdate. In thiscase, IDSwillpromptyou toupdate theVCM II softwarewith the popupwindow shown in Figure 3. The popupwindowmaycontainadditionalinformationifthereareapplications,suchastheCustomerFlightRecorder,installedontheVCMII.

    SelecttheTickbuttonandfollowtheonscreeninstructionstoupdatetheVCMIIsoftware. IftheCancelbuttonisselected,theVCMIIwillnotbeusablebytheinstalledversionofIDS.

    SelecttheTickbuttonandfollowtheonscreeninstructionstoupdatetheIDSsoftware(Recommended). SelecttheCancelbuttonandfollowonscreeninstructionstorollbackVCMIIsoftware.

    If theCancelbuttonwasselected, thepopupwindowshown inFigure5willpromptyou toproceedwiththerollback.

    SelecttheTickbuttonandfollowtheonscreeninstructionstorollbacktheVCMIIsoftware. IftheCancelbuttonisselected,theVCMIIwillnotbeusablebytheinstalledversionofIDS.

    PartoftherollbackprocessinvolvesamanualresetoftheVCMII.IDSwillnotifyyouwhentoperformthe reset. This requirespressing theVCM II recoverymode switch shown inFigure6.Toaccess therecovery mode switch, remove the rubber boot at the end of the VCM II where the USB cable isconnected.

    NOTE:DonotpresstheVCMIIrecoverymodeswitchuntilIDSdirectsyoutodoso.
