Dumping in the River How do people make positive changes to systems? 

By Ian­John Ombregt    The Chao Phraya is a large river flowing through Thailand like its “lifeblood” as the locals have stated. The source begins in the intersection between the Nan and Ping river, which are also its tributaries. Through Thailand it flows with meanders and floodplains where people would farm on until it reaches the delta of it, the Bangkok city area. After it finally discharges at its mouth at the Gulf of Thailand. Though it sounds very extraordinary, as it is, it is also very polluted and must be taken action upon. Its current state is terrible compared to its former glory of natural beatiful water with wildlife such as dolphin and fish, to a local sewage area.    My problem that I am looking at is the abundance of faeces in the river which, in a nutshell, contains nitrates that help plants grow, but the plants take too much oxygen from the water causing fish to die. My innovation to counter this problem is to, instead of just dumping the water from our pipes into the sewage area/Chao Phraya, we could convince the government to create a sewage system by telling them the effects towards them and others.   

INDICATORS of the PROBLEM  There are many ways to tell the effect of the Faeces in the river, many “indicators” to show that this is a real problem that needs to be fixed. Its important to know what the problem is doing to things so you know its actually a problem.

SYSTEMS 

  EFFECTS OF Faeces  The effects of the Faeces are mostly bad, all reasons are caused by the other like a system itself. The chain reaction happens where the plants grow too much causing the oxygen levels in the water to drop making fish die rapidly. The plants eventually overdose on the nitrates in the Faeces making the whole idea of more plants irrelevant. The fish dying causes the fishermen to lose money as well 

as complain on the reason the fish are dying. The fishermen complain to the government after realising the reason the fish are dying, because of the state of the water, because of the sewage system. Tourists also start to leave after being disgusted, and causes the government to lose money too. Then the government (if corrupt) will start taking money from the people through taxes, hen causing the people to protests on this.  PERSPECTIVES ON Faeces Different stakeholders have different opinions on Faeces  

Fishermen  The fishermen dislike this a lot because they lose money from the lack of fish as they don’t get to sell their fish, because they don’t haveany. They are affected by this from lack of money and they will start tocomplain to the government and may raise protests on the state of the river. 

Tourists  The tourists hate this too because their ideal vacation spot is ruined from lack of care towards the river. They don’t care much because they can just go to another vacation spot, but this does affect the government as well. 

Government  The government don’t care but will start to after the effect gets into action. They will start to hate this the most as protests could arise andthey will lose money from lack of tourists, and then their country couldbecome a worse place to live in. 

Fish  Fishes hate this because themselves are dying and their families aredying as well. Their population won’t even be able to grow enough anymore, and they will just be like the dolphins that are extinct in thatarea as well. I, myself has also seen this, I see fishes by the Khlong and now I don’t see them anymore. 

Water Hyacinth/Plants 

The plants love this but then start to hate this. They will love it becausethey grow and grow and when it seem like they can’t grow anymore they die. They die from too much nitrates just like a flower dies from too much water. 

 WHY THIS IS THE IDEAL POINT TO MAKE A CHANGE As can be seen in the system map, there are many different things that contribute the Faeces presence in the river. Some of the most significant reasons are: 

● The sewage being directed to the river ● The sewage systems require a lot of maintenance  ● The sewage systems are very expensive  

● The current sewage system of directing to the river is much easier  The key to changing the system is at the point of sewage being directed to the river. This is an ideal point to make a difference because it will stop the faeces from even entering the river.  

INNOVATION  The proposed innovation is to convince the government to create a sewage system by telling them the bad effects towards them and others instead of always directing sewage to the river.   This innovation will be effective for the following reasons:  NATURE  The problem is we can’t stop ourselves and animals from pooping and excreting faeces. The problem, if not taken action upon will grow and destroy the wildlife and ourselves that has caused it, and not only that… kill the plants as well! This is a serious problem that people need to stop.  The solution could simply, but not so simply, be to create a sewage system, this could help everyone in surviving, and having a clean and purified life. The plants, animals and us could all benefit from this.  ECONOMY  The problem could decrease money for many people in the long run, but still needs to be thought upon. The Government would lose money from lack of tourists due to the disgust, fishermen would lose jobs resulting in losing money due to lack of fish and the people would live in a worse place due to the lack of care from the Government as they have lost lots of money.  The solution, though it is very expensive and inconvenient will help everyone in the long run. It may cost a lot, but the Government will probably gain money instead of loss, fishermen would gain too and the people would live in a better place.  SOCIETY  The problem will just collapse society on itself, as people wouldn’t have enough money to sustain themselves and people would just lose income effecting their lives. The poor would be poorer, the 

moderately rich would get broke and people’s families such as fishermen will just be affected a lot.  The solution would completely backfire the problem as people would gain instead of lose making people’s lives full of joy and happiness, also the river will look nicer making the place in total be a better place in terms of atmosphere.   WELL­BEING  The problem is just the opposite from the solution, people would get sick, people would get germs from the river and it would just be there making people’s lives unhappy sending an negative vibe in the atmosphere.  The solution pretty plainly just makes the river healthier preventing people getting the germs from the water or anywhere near the germs because they wouldn’t be there in the first place, preventing illness and sickness and making people happier.   

CONCLUSION  The problem of the abundance of faeces in the river can be proved true in various ways but simply you can point out how it has affected people and things. You can see dead fish in the river which shows how this kills them, you can see the plants growing along the river while simultaneously some are dying off, you can see tourists seeming to leave the country and you can see fishermen not fishing there. Stakeholders are affected by this, fishermen lose jobs and money, tourists leave the country, the government loses tourists and then money, fish die off and though the grow at first the plants will die too.   Some of those have not taken effect yet but will happen, unless we take action upon creating a sewage system. Although it is expensive it will be worthwhile in the long run as if we do this, the government won’t lose money due to the lack of tourists, fishermen can keep their jobs, fish can repopulate and may even past extinct creatures can come back from the aquariums around donating the animals.   This helps the NATURE side of things because us, the animals and the plants won’t die and have better lives. This helps the ECONOMIC side of things because the government, the people and the fishermen will not only prevent themselves from losing money, they will earn too. This helps the SOCIETY side of things because the people in the society can live better lives. Finally, this helps the WELL­BEING of people, animals and plants because they can live on and we can live better, 

happier and healthier. All in all this just leads us to nothing but positive.    Works cited
