Smaat's Passion driven Youths secure the future of India's Children

Information, Education and Communication program on Natural Resource Management with the theme of India's youth leading the future citizens of India towards a sustainable growth.

It is a known fact that India lacks proper awareness on conservation of water, sanitation, hygiene and preservation of Nature. With the increasing iota of pollution and misuse of nature, hardly there is anyone to pass on the secrets of preservation to the next upcoming generation. The passionate youths of Smaat- the youth of India have taken upon themselves the responsibility of imparting education and awareness to little children in communities in sector of Natural Resource Management.

Activities covered under this IEC Program are-1. Importance of safe potable water and conservation2. Good hand washing techniques3. Using of latrines and good hygienic practices4. Plantation of saplings and importance of the trees for the future5. Cultural preservation and encouragement of talent

Primary focus is targeted towards 180 Villages sponsored by Government of Karnataka in collaboration with NABARD-UPNRM Project in 7 Districts of Karnataka. Along with awareness program and training techniques for children and adults, plantation of saplings will also be done where in 400 saplings will be planted respectively.

Children understand quickly as they have excellent grasping power and in-turn the family will be educated. When the family is educated, the whole community comes to terms on proper living. Due to the advent of progressive learning, India will evolve as the sustainable Nation, proving to be a model Nation. All these are to be achieved due to the passion and zeal among Smaat's youth to transform the Nation.

Umbrella Programme for Natural Resource Management

NABARD has been implementing Natural Resource Management projects (Watershed Development and Wadi Development Programmes) for

the past 20 years under Indo-German collaboration with support from KfW and GIZ. The long standing development cooperation between

NABARD and German Development Corporation (GDC) has been a key contributor in NABARD emerging as an innovator in the natural resource

management, influencing policy at national level and improving lives at grass root level. In order to further upscale and integrate NABARD’s

existing and future Indo-German NRM efforts into one streamlined approach of participatory NRM related interventions, NABARD and GDC has

launched the Umbrella Programme on Natural Resources Management (UPNRM).

The UPNRM integrates NABARD’s existing and future Indo-German NRM efforts into one streamlined approach of participatory NRM related

interventions. The programme objective is to contribute to mainstreaming of holistic, participatory and financially sustainable livelihood solutions

into public NRM policies and financial instruments for improving the livelihoods of the rural poor based on the sustainable natural resource use

and management. The programme aims at funding community managed sustainable NRM based rural livelihood projects.

UPNRM is following a programme based approach wherein different channel partners (agencies) are being supported for implementing various

types of sustainable NRM projects conforming to the flexible programming mechanism on agreed policies and guiding principles of the strategic

partners. The projects proposed under UPNRM will have to pass through a scrutiny at Guiding Principles level of the programme. These

principles entail that the projects have to be pro-poor designed on integrated & need based approach, should ensure sustainability, involve

community participation and be based on sound and transparent Governance.

The programme envisages a gradual shift from grant based to loan based NRM projects and funding will be through a corpus comprising

Financial Cooperation from KfW as well as fund mobilized by NABARD from various sources. The interest rate applicable for projects under

UPNRM will depend on the nature of project, channel partners and the target groups.

The skit teams

A team of 6 members was appointed for every village. These members used folk songs to explain about the importance of Natural Resources. They followed with a skit of explaining how people misuse the only water resource for agriculture, washing of clothes, animals, drinking and bathing. The water resource seem to deplete and people fell sick drinking only one kind of water. The moral of the skit was to emphases on clean drinking water, water conservation and optimal use of Natural Resources along with not polluting the environment

An overwhelming response!

The total IEC Program was indeed a very memorable and impactful program. The outcome was massive and the response was beyond what had been expected. The neighboring villages who were not covered, also responded positively requesting for establishment of Pure water treatment plants in their villages. Both the young and the old had a lot to learn in regards to hygiene, pure and safe water and overall development of health. There was learning with fun.

Smaat India is indeed thankful to NABARD UPNRM and Government of Karnataka for giving a revolutionary opportunity to conduct the IEC Program.
