PART A - SECTION SUMMARY

A.1 Executive Summary The Section had a vibrant year of activities in 2009, building upon the good work done in

previous years. Following are some of the highlights of the activities of the section in

2009.

As the Global IEEE celebrated the 125th year of Engineering the Future, Kerala

Section joined the celebrations with three glittering programs including a grand

Engineering the Future Day Celebrations on 13 May 2009

Organized three highly successful National-level Conferences on emerging

technologies such as Cloud Computing, Mobile Applications and Next Generation

Wireless Technologies.

The society chapters of IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Communications Society,

IEEE Power & Energy and the joint chapter of IA/IEL/PEL each had an active year

with a number of seminars, lectures and other programs organized by them.

The affinity groups of GOLD and WIE were active in the year, organizing

programs targeting the young professionals and women engineers respectively.

In association with other professional societies such as Institution of Engineers

India, Computer Society of India, Project Management Institute and so on,

conducted 40 weekly technical talks on almost every Wednesday during the year.

Actively engaged with other IEEE entities at the HQ, R10, India Council, Societies

and other sections. This included representation in R10 EXECOM, international

committees of Computer Society, leadership in the Humanitarian Technology

Challenge initiative, contributions to the NDLP program of IEEE India Council, and

signing of a multilateral sister section agreement with four sections and one

council in USA.

The student activities has been especially vibrant with the 48th student branch

inaugurated, the LINK (Local Integrated Network Kerala) providing the vital link

in coordinating the activities across student branches, and CEC co-hosting the

R10 Student Congress in Singapore.

Membership across grades has been growing steadily, which resulted in the

Section bagging the 2008 MGA Award for Sustained Membership Growth in R10.

Governmental relations reaching new heights, with the Chair of IEEE Kerala

nominated to several committees of Govt. of Kerala in a consultative role.

PART B - ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES

B.1 Membership Development Programs

In 2009, as the global IEEE celebrated the 125th year of Engineering the Future, Kerala Section got an additional reason to celebrate. In July, the Section won the 2008 MGA Section Sustained Membership Growth Award for success in member recruitment and retainment for Region 10. In his congratulatory letter to the Section Chair, Mr.Joseph V Lillie, Vice President IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) said that the award is based on the membership growth record for 3 previous years (2006-08 period). As the membership data of 2009 comes in, a 32% increase in membership is reported over the past year, indicating that the growth story of Kerala Section is continuing unabated. The membership data showing the different grades of members over the past 4 years are tabulated, and illustrated below.

Membership As On

A few observations are worth noting here: 1. As on 31 Dec 2009, the section membership stands at 3589, including 605

professional grade members.

2. The Section membership has grown by 32% over the previous year, almost 10

times more than the international membership growth of 3.8 in 2009.

3. The membership has been growing annually at a rate of around 30% since 2007,

significantly more than the international growth rate of 1.5-2% during the same

period.

4. The growth is largely based on the outstanding growth in student membership

(32%), which comprises of 74% of the section membership and forms its most

vibrant community.

5. The growth in higher level membership is also significant, with a 52% increase in

regular Members in 2009.

6. The number of senior members, relatively stagnant for the last few years, has

seen a definite jump in 2009, with 14 members being elevated to this level,

thanks to the Senior Member Initiative launched by Section.

7. There are 240 GOLD members in the Section, which represents 36% of the

professional grade membership, and augers well for the future of the Section.

In every program conducted exclusively by the Section, the welcome address by any of the Section Office bearers would include a talk on IEEE, its activities, and the benefits of being a member. In addition, two specific campaigns were executed in the year. First was to contact members with arrears and persuade them to continue membership. Second was the Senior Member elevation initiative to contact members who are conforming to the first level requirements and guiding them through the formalities of Senior Member application. Both initiatives were successful, as indicated by the membership data.

WIE Affinity Group WIE is organizing the school outreach programme with funding from IEEE Foundation. The aim of the project is to create an interest among girl students in science and engineering. IEEE WIE student volunteers from various colleges with WIE student branches are the volunteers for the project. A two day workshop was conducted for the volunteers on 13-14 Sep 2009 on how to conduct this programme and methods were discussed on how the volunteers can create an interest among school students. Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON) was roped in as the partner for this program. Even after completion of this funded project, the activity can continue as part of the STAR programme of WIE. The trained volunteers will train their juniors to take the project forward in years to come.
