Major Section activities

Connect 2010, an exposition for Communication Systems and Information Technology, was held from 8 to 10 May 2010 at Expo Centre Karachi, where IEEE Karachi Section exhibited a stall to establish student-industry liaison and inform the public in general, and students and

1

industry professionals in particular, of the rewards and benefits of IEEE Membership. The arrangements for the stall were primarily done by Parkash Lohana, Section Chair, Muhammad Yasir Khan, Section Secretary and Syed Ahmed Fuad, GINI Coordinator. A large number of Student Members from various SBs, assisted by Members of Section Ex-Com, volunteered as stall presenters throughout the three days, skilfully managed by Hassaan Idrees, Section Student Representative, and Muhammad Saad of ComSoc. A very large number of visitors were interested in the IEEE Communications Society, ComSoc, as regards to its involvement with the latest technological developments and the Conferences organised by the Society throughout the year. The various benefits of IEEE displayed on appealing posters and other promotional material caught several eyes and scores of visitors filled on-spot IEEE Membership forms. The IEEE Stall presenters gained valuable insight in the market trends in Communications and IT and interacted with various industry professionals, forging important links. Bilal Husain, a student volunteer, said, ‘Connect2010 gave me an opportunity to interact with different people from various fields. It was a great experience to meet some of our potential future employers.’ Sidra of Bahria University said, ‘The event was a chance to interact with great personalities like IT directors of organisations, professors and students of different universities, and we shared the latest benefits of student membership of IEEE.’ At the end of the three-day event the exhibition organisers presented a shield to the IEEE Members as a token of appreciation.

Karachi’s Quest for Black Gold – road to energy solutionIf all the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia and Iran are put together, they add up to nearly 375 billion barrels, but a single Thar Coal Reserve in Sindh is about 850 trillion cubic feet – more than oil reserves of these two countries!

The truth of these words really struck us when some 20 odd students of IEEE UIT Student Branch and Karachi Section saw for themselves the Thar coal reserves on a day-long trip on 30 July accompanied by the Section Chair Mr Parkash Lohana. The black gold is found in all the four provinces of Pakistan, but the bulk of it is found in Sindh, so the journey was made there in order to gauge by budding engineers how much potential the reserves really bear. On the way, a stop-over was made at Jamshoro, an impressive museum of Sindhi heritage, Sindhology, which is 200 kilometres from the mines and houses exciting specimens of the historic Indus Valley Civilisation, unearthed at Moen Jodaro estimated at being in existence since 3000 BC. After reaching our destination, it was told that these coal reserves are one of the largest of their kind on Earth, located about 450 km from Karachi. Even though a great area was cordoned off for visitors, nevertheless, it was easy to guesstimate the enormity of the deposits. The guide informed the trippers that the economic coal deposits of Pakistan are restricted to Paleocene and Eocene rock sequences and the magnitude of the reserves in this can be quantified by the fact that they encompass one of the world’s largest lignite deposits, sprawling over more than 9,000 square kilometres, and are sufficient to meet country’s fuel requirements for centuries! Recent studies on coal bed methane (CBM) proposed to be carried out in Thar will enhance the value of this deposit. That the appropriate steps are not taken is another story, since to our disappointment we saw that there was minimal excavation or quarrying being carried out on the fields. The knowledge was quite depressing that the country has been facing energy crises despite owning such priceless treasures. Pakistan has emerged as one of the leading countries – seventh in the list of top 20 countries of the world – after the discovery of these huge lignite coal resources in Sindh. Whole-hearted efforts in this regard are really sought to tap the potential of these deposits. Making an excursion to the nearby areas, we also witnessed small-scale endeavours to use renewable source of energy on the site; a few solar-powered workhouses in the vicinity that were indigenously developed.

3. Cornerstone Reform by GINI Karachi: 11 November saw GINI Karachi Section holding a discussion group at Pakistan Navy Engineering College, PNEC. As the Industrial Relations wing reared itself for action, the National University of Sciences and Technology, NUST, Corporate Relations Manager Mr Sikander Hazir was enlightened IEEE student members about the multi-pronged action plan designed to empower them with all the training and tools as to engage in successful careers. The plan initiates with basic offices in each Student Branch with a Career Development Centre (CDC) headed by a proactive faculty/non-faculty member, catering to a wider platform than dealing with just internships and placements. It was decided that regular meetings of various HR managers with CDC Head can result in clarifying the nature of ideal candidates required by industry. This can well provide the foundation for Career Counselling, including résumé, cover letter and interview help. Mr Hazir noted that fresh grads were more often than not academic geniuses and hands-on training pertaining to relevant disciplines on both technical and soft skills development could better shape them, thereby necessitating on monthly grounding to blend them in both. Another aspect which received appreciation was research-based and on-field internships, carved by the CDC in specific industries. Research-based placements would also be a branch to embedding final year projects with engineering companies. The idea of featuring frequent and fruitful industrial visits on the plan gathered thumbs-up as well. And lastly, a step-by-step curriculum overhaul, an amalgam of industry and academe incorporating short courses where necessary, concluded the GINI reform, drawing on a lot of hope from students. http://www.nust.edu.pk/usr/cdo/default.aspx
