ABOUT IELTS

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is an internationally recognised language certificate that is accepted for entrance to universities around the world (IELTS Academic) and by immigration authorities in English speaking countries (IELTS General Training). As proof of your English level, it is also useful for employment and improving your career opportunities. The test is taken by over one million students every year.

IELTS EXAM

The exam covers four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking and can be taken either as a paper test or by computer. The student’s results are expressed as band scores from 0 to 9 (expert user). Different institutions and authorities will require different minimum overall scores. They may also require minimum band scores in one or more of the skills.

Entrance to the HND programmes at City College requires an overall band score of 5.5

Dr Mais Sulaiman

Dr Mais is a Lecturer in EAP and IELTS. Before joining City College, she taught on a number of different courses and institutions. She worked as a Teaching Fellow in English for Academic purposes at Leeds University and as an Academic Tutor in TESOL and Linguistics at Sunderland and Newcastle Universities. She has also worked as a tutor in General English in the Middle East. She holds a PhD degree in Linguistics from Newcastle University, an MA in English Language Teaching from Warwick University, and the CELTA teaching qualification. Outside work, she enjoys most sports and travelling.

Matthew Brown

Matthew is from Edinburgh in Scotland. He has taught in eight countries in Europe, East Asia and the Middle East and specialise in EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and IELTS. His previous roles include teaching on the Australian Scholarship Awards, a course designed to prepare international scholars for undergraduate and post-graduate study at Australian universities. Matthew has also worked at the British Council, Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and Folkuniversitetet in Sweden. In hisfree time, Matthew enjoys playing squash and hiking.
