The Problem
How many miles do we walk to get to all of our classes from the residence halls?
How many miles does this add up to in a week? A month? A semester? A whole year?
How many miles do we walk to Math Across the Cultures class?
How To Solve It
Step 1: Measure the distance that it takes to walk to each class from the residence halls, then multiply it by two to calculate the roundtrip
We used a pedometer.
Step 2: Multiply the distance by four to calculate the total distance for all classes
Skip this step to solve for math class only
Step 3: Multiply this number by two to get the miles per week, by eight to get the miles per month, by fifteen to get the miles per semester, and by thirty to get the miles per year.
The Results
- Average distance to one class: 1 mile (round trip)
- At the rate of one mile per class, eight classes per week:
- 2 miles/day
- 8 miles/week
- 32 miles/month
- 120 miles/semester
- 240 miles per academic school year!
- We 3.2 miles a week alone, just to see Professor Orey!
Guess What?
According to the formula energy = distance xweight, we burn an outstanding 19,091 calories a year!!
