what would there be to eat?

If it weren’t for farmers—

Page 3: If It Weren’t for Farmers

All the fruits and vegetables,

Page 4: If It Weren’t for Farmers

All the fruits and vegetables,

all the milk and cheese,

Page 5: If It Weren’t for Farmers

All the fruits and vegetables,

all the milk and cheese, meat and eggs you enjoy,

Page 6: If It Weren’t for Farmers

all the wheat that’s made into

flour,

Page 7: If It Weren’t for Farmers

that’s baked into bread and

cookies and cakes,

all the wheat that’s made into

flour,

Page 8: If It Weren’t for Farmers

…all of it comes from farmers.

Page 9: If It Weren’t for Farmers

A farm is a place where people go to work…to grow plants or raise

animals for food.

Page 10: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Some farm crops—such as oranges, grapefruits,

and peaches—grow best where it’s warm

most of the time.

Others—such as apples and berries, potatoes, and tomatoes—can be grown in cooler climates.

Page 11: If It Weren’t for Farmers

And there are places where the soil and climate are just right for growing corn and grains.

Fields of wheat or corn stretch as far as the eye can see.

Page 12: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Farmers often add fertilizer to their soil. Fertilizer is plant food. It helps

farmers grow bigger, healthier plants.

Page 13: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Many farmers use chemicals to kill harmful weeds and insects, and to protect the crops

from plant diseases.

Page 14: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Other farms are organic. They do

not use chemicals.

They use only things found in nature to help

their plants grow.

Page 15: If It Weren’t for Farmers

But the most important thing all crops need is water.

Page 16: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Nothing can grow without water.

Sometimes there isn’t enough rain.

Page 17: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Then the farmer irrigates his crops. He brings water to them from natural sources such as

rivers or springs.

Page 18: If It Weren’t for Farmers

The water reaches the crops through an irrigation ditch, or

through a pipeline connected to sprinklers.

Page 19: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Today, machines help the farmers do their work.

Tractors pull the plows that break up the soil… and the planters that

plant the seeds…

Page 20: If It Weren’t for Farmers

and the harvesters that gather in the crops.

Page 21: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Some crops are so delicate

that they would be crushed

by machines.

Raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries are

like that, so they are picked

by hand.

Page 22: If It Weren’t for Farmers

Besides crop farms, there are dairy farms where milk and cheese are produced…

Page 23: If It Weren’t for Farmers

poultry farms, where chickens are raised for meat and eggs…

Page 24: If It Weren’t for Farmers

And cattle farms or ranches, where cattle are raised for beef.
