What is Coaching?
“Coaching is the art of creating an environment, through conversation and a way of being, that facilitates the process by which a person can move toward desired goals in a fulfilling manner.” (Tim Gallwey, 2000, p. 177)
“Coaching … brings out the best in people, uncovers strengths and skills ... cultivates compassion, and builds emotionally resilient educators.” (Elena Aguilar, 2003, p. 6)
Coaching Strategies: The Coaching Dance
A dance in three movements; After sharing your ratings...
1. Coach listens – a subtly complex skill; reviews written work
2. Coach responds – primarily with questions to promote deeper learning and reflection
3. Coach will suggest an action; make a recommendation(s)
(Elena Aguilar, 2003, The Art of Coaching)

Reflection of Coaching Strategies
Consider
• Careful thought about your own actions, thinking, beliefs, etc…
• Precipitating Factors - factors that impact the coaching conversation
• Focus on growth and improvement• The role of reflection in the post observation
conference as it allows teachers to take ownership of their improvement (Standard 5).
Do you know it?
Do you show it?
Is it visible in the actions of
your students?
Is it visible beyond the
instructional space of your classroom?

Questions to Consider: Link● What does Globally Competitive mean in your
classroom? ● How are you preparing students for 21st century? ● What data sources do you use? ● How do you know your students are progressing?
Evidences: LinkUtilizes a formal system to collect and use student data and
shows artifacts that display how data was used to drive instruction.
Uses formative assessment notebooks to track progress or lack of progress and examines data before getting to end of quarter/benchmarks.
Empowers students by the use of rubrics and student-made assessments in the classroom
Conducts conferences with students to discuss scores and how to track growth, articulating what help students need to improve.
Allows student-led conferences to promote student leadership and ownership for learning
Think & Share
• Think about the CLOSE read strategy.• What do the key words and verbs tell you about
the element?• How can you use this strategy in coaching; PLCs,
staff meetings, individual sessions?• If you want to share, put your idea(s) in the
questions bar.
Planning for Post Observation Coaching Conference
“Failing to plan is planning to fail” - Ben Franklin• Prior to the conference, think about the teacher and pre-assess
the type of coaching that will work best for them• Review their observation• Draft some open-ended questions to use that will allow the
teacher to talk and you to listen• Identify areas of strengths and areas for growth• Identify a “starter list” of ideas for growth and development• Think about the possible push-back you may get and how you
can work through it
NCEES Questions Evidence Document
Examine some protocolsNCEES: A Coaching Protocol• Uses the NCPTS rubric, Questions document and
steps of Evaluation process as coaching tools
GROW Protocol
• 4 steps for post-observation conference
NCEES: A Coaching Protocol - Putting it All Together• Teacher takes the lead in the conference
NCEES: A Coaching Protocol
• Review Standard/Element ratings and celebrate the elements where teacher has performed well
• Listen to the teacher feedback• Ask reflective questions on elements where
teacher needs growth; use the NCEES Questions; Dig deeper…– How does it affect your classroom/positively impact
student achievement? – How does it affect our school? – How does it affect our profession?
• Encourage teacher and make suggestions
Grow Protocol
Grow - Talk about what you want to achieve as the outcomesReality - Compare where you are now with where you want to beOptions - Examine the available options What or Way forward - Identify specific actions required to move forwardGrow questions
GROW model (Whitmore, 2002).
Sample Grow QuestionsGoal:
• What do you want to achieve?
Reality:• What have you already tried?
Options:• What has worked well in the past? What else?
What or Way Forward:• How will you go about it?

NCEES Coaching ProtocolPutting it all together
Warm and Clear Opening
• Teacher reviews the aim of the lesson observed • Teacher articulates her aim for the feedback conversation• Principal paraphrases and affirms teacher’s aim of the lesson and aim for the
conversation• Principal similarly states their aim for the conversation.
Focus on positive
• Teacher discusses what they thought went well. • Principal paraphrases teacher’s reflection then comments on concrete, specific things
that went well during observation.
Identify challenges/Feedback (Coaching, Collaborating, Consulting)
• Teacher • Principal
Teacher and principal generate next steps for improvement
Adapted from: Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching, 2013
Warm and Clear Opening
• Let’s look at a scenario• Consider the NCEES Coaching Protocol• What is successful?• Growth opportunities?
Scenario
Ms. Richmond at Sunshine Elementary has been teaching for 5 years. She was just
observed four days ago and is looking forward to her post observation conference
with the principal, Ms. Smith. Principal Smith arrives just as the last student is leaving
Ms. Richmond’s classroom. After settling in, Principal Smith asks Ms. Richmond to
review the aim of the lesson that was observed. Ms. Richmond states that her
students are not able to describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations,
or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. This
lesson was about modeling the use of a specific graphic organizer to improve this skill.
Ms. Richmond wants to know if her approach of modeling, guided practice, and
independent practice was effective with this graphic organizer. Principal Smith says
she is ready to talk about the gradual release of responsibility she observed in Ms.
Richmond’s classroom and her thoughts about student engagement during the
observation.
Warm and Clear Opening
• What is successful?• Growth opportunities?
Post thoughts or ideas in questions bar.
NCEES Coaching Protocol
• Let’s look at the Rubric from the observation.• What does the teacher say?• How does the principal respond?
Rubric Example
Post-observation ConversationTeacher: I thought I modeled the use of the graphic organizer pretty well. There were few questions when the
students were working on their own and in their small groups. They were able to complete the task. I’m not
sure though if they understood how it could help them describe characters better.
Principal: In the lesson, there was evidence of demonstrating knowledge of processes needed to support
students in acquiring critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills through modeling the use of the graphic
organizer.
Principal: Students demonstrated drawing conclusions during a think-pair-share. Talk about how you teach
students to make complex choices? When is it visible in the actions of students when they synthesize
knowledge? (Teacher shares some thoughts)
Principal: Share with me how you will hand over responsibility to the students? What will that look like? What
will the students be doing? How will you know students are engaged? What will the next lesson look like?
Teacher: In the next lesson, I will work on trying to design the lesson so the students do the work and the
decision making. Maybe include a strategy that helps them synthesize their knowledge. I need a formative
assessment to check understanding and ensure engagement.
Principal: I will ask Mrs. Black the instructional coach to share some resources this week in PLCs.
Principal and teacher decide to choose another date to observe a lesson to look for a few of the things they
discussed.
NCEES Coaching Protocol
• Add thoughts and ideas in questions bar• Focused on the Teacher metacognition -
thinking about thinking• Principal as the instructional coach
