JUNE 2019 WEEK 9 – TERM 2
If you don’t need
On Saturday the rugby season drew to an end
for the blue and gold of St Charles College.
The mighty Amalekites ended off their season
on Old Boys day against St Alban’s College from
Pretoria. The visitors couldn’t have started the
game better, after a driving maul from 10m out
saw St Charles College concede the 1st try.
St Alban’s converted and had an early lead of
7-0. Both sides played a good territorial game in
the opening quarter of the match, St Alban’s
getting a kickable penalty to stretch their lead to
10-0. St Charles College then began their fight
back, 1st try being scored by lock James Laynes
and converted by inside centre Steven Scott. It wasn’t
long after their try when they again had St Alban’s on
their own try line, this time a penalty by Scott saw
SCC level the scores at 10-10. Just before the break
scrumhalf JJ Foord saw space at the back and his box
kick was fielded by fullback Simiso Ngubane for the
Saints 2nd try of the afternoon.
The 2nd half would be remembered for the
outstanding defence of St Charles College. With a
sole penalty by Scott to stretch the lead to 18-10, the
rest of the half saw brave defence by
St Charles College. With the St Alban’s team boasting
numerous provincial players and launching attack after attack, they were unable to score any points in the
last 35 minutes of the match.
The final score remained 18-10 to St Charles College; players who stood out were Captain Jason Robert
(1), James Laynes (5), Nhlakanipho Zikalala (6), Steven Scott (12) and Ruben Jacobs (14).
This concluded a very successful season for St Charles College. Having played the top rugby schools in
KZN and managing closely contested matches down the line, it is safe to say that St Charles College is a
force to be reckoned with on the rugby field.
Other Results from the day included:
2nd XV SCC 20-15 St Alban’s U15A SCC 12-29 St Alban’s
3rd XV SCC 27-0 St Alban’s U14A SCC 29-15 St Alban’s
U16A SCC 59-0 St Alban’s
The final hockey fixture of the Saints 2019 season was a well-attended and festive one. Old Boys Day
combined with Friday night lights made it a special evening for everyone involved and the match didn’t
disappoint. The Saints from PMB got off to a great start putting St Alban’s under large amounts of pressure
and displaying some good passages of play to create a number of opportunities.
2019 Old Boys Weekend St Charles College end season on a high
1st XI Hockey vs St Alban’s
Taygen Mollentze was instrumental throughout and was dangerous around the opponent’s circle area.
He managed to get through a number of tackles and weave his way into the circle, not once but twice, to
score 2 goals and put SCC into the lead. St Alban’s came back fighting and tried to change the momentum
of the game. For their efforts they managed to force
a short corner that was well converted into the top
left corner; score being 2-1 going into the half time
break.
Shortly after the half time SCC scored another goal
to take the score to 3-1 while continuing to play some
good hockey. 2 goals up, the mindsets changed and
the game began to swing. St Alban’s won another
short corner that was again converted into the top left
corner and were then awarded a penalty flick shortly
after to level up the scores.
A number of cards were awarded and disciplines from
both sides started to waver. St Alban’s kept their
composure and managed to capitalise on their
numerical advantage and converted another short
corner to take the lead. The final nail was put in the
coffin with a late break away field goal to take the score
to 5-3.
Well done to St Alban’s on a well fought victory.
The come back from behind made for an entertaining
game of hockey and kept all spectators on the edge of
their seats for the entire match.
More results from the weekend’s fixtures:
2nd SCC 0-1 St Alban’s U16A SCC 4-0 St Alban’s
3rd SCC 1-2 St Alban’s U14A SCC 3-3 St Alban’s

On Saturday morning our Grade 1 and 2 boys played in an internal rugby festival, just prior to the Prep
1st team rugby fixture. There were many great tackles and good tries from our Junior Primary boys as they
showed their moms and dads what they have been practicing during the term. Well done to our Grade 1s
and Grade 2s.
This past weekend our Prep rugby teams hosted Cordwalles. The U9 age group had a successful morning
where both the A team the B team won their fixtures, 35-10 and 50-0 respectively. The U10As played
attractive rugby, beating their Cordwalles opposition 20 points to 15. The SCC 2nd side finished off their
impressive season with a 15-7 win against their Cordwalles counterparts. The Prep 1st fifteen showed great
heart and determination as they narrowly lost 0-10 to Cordwalles. Well done to all our Prep rugby players
this past term on some great team and individual performances. – Mr Chad Barron
Some of our Old Boys entertained our school squash
players in an Exhibition match which took place on
Wednesday, 12 June. It was a pleasure to see the skills
the Old Boys possess, and we trust that the SCC boys
picked up some skills for the game of squash.
Players are from the left: Mick Gouweloos, Justin
Gouweloos (winner of the exhibition), Jono Esteves and
Luke Barnard. – Mr Ryan Smith
On Friday afternoon the SCC cross country team travelled to World’s View to run in the weekly cross
country race held by TWC. All our SCC cross country runners achieved top 15 places this past week, with
the highlight being Nicholas Deysel’s 1st place finish in the U10 age group. – Mr Chad Barron

Aladdin JR “This past week, the St Charles College and Epworth collaboration of Aladdin JR was brought to life! The musical
included some favourite Alan Menken songs such as ‘Friend Like Me’, ‘A Whole New World’ and ‘Prince Ali’ as well
as a few wonderful new songs added for the Broadway production. With new, colourful character and non-stop
adventures, Aladdin JR was definitely enjoyed by all those who attended!
The final show was unfortunately disrupted due to a power outage at the Hexagon Theatre. Please contact the
Hexagon Theatre directly on 033 260 5537 for a refund on your tickets for Thursday night’s show.
The new postponed date will be confirmed shortly.
We would like to extend a massive thank you and congratulations to every single cast, crew and staff member who
spent countless hours over the past months making the production the success that is was!” Ms Roselyn Dredge
Saints Invitational Cricket Tour On Monday, 24 June, 12 St Charles College students and two staff members will be
travelling to England to play cricket. The boys will be playing seven games and will do a
tour of Lord’s, the London Eye and London Dungeon to name a few activities.
The tour will be a total of 12 days and will be a great cultural experience for the students,
especially during the Cricket World Cup.
We wish them well, fly the Saints flag high! – Mr Rowan Irons

They say team work makes
the dream work. For the
U15C rugby boys and their
coach, Mr Dlamini, great
team work has resulted in
them having a dream winter
season in 2019.
Going unbeaten, at any
level in any sport, takes a
great amount of effort, team
synergy and I suppose a bit
of good fortune. Our U15
boys deserved to finish the
season with big smiles,
they have done the Blue
and Gold mighty proud.
Saints Hockey embarked on an
exciting new journey this year,
playing four fixtures under lights on
Friday evening.
The atmosphere created around the
turf with braais and music was family-
orientated and a lot of fun. We look
forward to building on this initiative in
2020. What may not have been so
exciting for parents and coaches
were the cold mid-week practice
sessions under lights!
We thank parents for
accommodating the change in
routine and especially the U14A,
U14B, U16A and 1st team families
(as well as our House Masters and catering team in the boarding establishment) for adjusting and making
these sessions possible. The positive spin-off is that more Saints teams were able to have access to turf
during the week.
Super Saints!

A sincere vote of thanks to all the SCC parents who hosted St Alban’s boys last weekend. It is truly appreciated and makes our inter-provincial exchanges possible!
Inter House Hockey
Blood Donor Clinic
Towards the end of the season, our Senior School
boys participated in their Inter House Hockey matches.
Well done to Conway House for achieving first place.
Seen in the picture along-side is James Twycross, the
2019 captain of Conway House.
On the last day of term,
the South African National
Blood Service visited
St Charles College, giving
staff and boys in the
Senior School the chance
to donate blood and help
save a life!
Our Annual Prep School Polar Bear swim took place earlier this morning, with many brave boys swimming and a
number of staff nominated to swim! The Polar Bear swim raises money for the annual Grade 7 trip to Cape Town.
We applaud and thank the chilly champions who in all
likelihood beat their own personal best over the
15-metre swim!

Talking Drums
As part of their Words Week programme
our Junior Primary boys visited
Scrummies on their pyjama day to spend
some time together reading.
Our Scrummies boys loved the visit from
the boys in 'big school' and we especially
loved to see how our Junior Primary boys
with brothers in the Pre-Primary, with no
prompting, immediately sought out their
little brothers.
Our Pre-Primary and Senior Primary School
have been collecting tins of food for the
Winter Warmth Outreach this term.
These tins will be warmly welcomed and so
appreciated by the Woodlands community at
Amy Biehl Creche’ and Mama Ntombi
outreach. Thank you to all our Parents in the
Prep School for your generous spirits.
– Mrs Angie Mayo
Have you heard about our Saints Kit Recycling initiative?
Just a reminder as the second term draws to a close, and in the last two weeks of each season, we will have a collection for shoes, boots, hockey sticks and general sports equipment. If your son has out-grown his equipment, instead of it sitting at the bottom of the cupboard, please consider donating it?
There is an aluminium cage in the senior sports office where the boys can drop off their donations. We would like to thank Mr Duncan Andrew for the great initiative.
If you don’t need it - Donate it!
