USSIAS TSARS ALL HAD A THING FOR OBSCENELY POSH PALACES which is one reason why the peasants didnt like them, I guess. But those same palaces – stunningly restored, with their gold- and-glier facades, decadent interiors and priceless works of art today aract tourists and tourist-dollars by the shipload. Tsar Peter the Great (Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov to be precise, or Пётр Алексе́евич Рома́нов if you prefer it Russian) was responsible for more than his fair share of these edifices. In fact, St Petersburg with its magnificent Hermitage and sensaonal Catherines Palace – wouldnt exist without him. But that citys most inspired aracon (and a must-see, in the opinion of me) is Petrodvorets or Peterhof, as its beer known. We roamed the gardens, meandering along the paths, soaking up the ambience, and imagining what life mightve been like for the 18 th centurys wealthy bourgeoisie. It was a gorgeous warm day, and crowds of Russians were doing the same thing: kids playing hide-and-seek amongst the hedgerows, picnickers reclining on the lawns, young lovers kissing under the trees, actors in costumes role-playing for the cameras. You wouldnt believe the fountains There are 144 of them, Im told, built back in 1721 all gravity-fed (not a pump-staon to be seen) and all squirng a combined 36,000 litres of water per minute high into the air. And surrounding the fountains are tumbling waterfalls, flowing staircases and marble-and-gold statues galore. USSIA’S TSARS ALL HAD A THING FOR OBSCENELY POSH PALACES – which is one reason why the peasants didn’t like them, I guess. But those same palaces – stunningly restored, with their gold-and-glitter facades, decadent interiors and priceless works of art – today attract tourists and tourist-dollars by the shipload. Tsar

Peter the Great (Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov to be precise, or Пётр Алексее́вич Рома́нов if you prefer it Russian) was responsible for more than his fair share of these edifices. In fact, St Petersburg – with its magnificent Hermitage and sensational Catherine’s Palace – wouldn’t exist without him. But that city’s most inspired attraction (and a must-see, in the opinion of me) is Petrodvorets – or Peterhof, as it’s better known.

We roamed the gardens, meandering along the paths, soaking up the ambience, and imagining what life might’ve been like for the 18th century’s wealthy bourgeoisie. It was a gorgeous warm day, and crowds of Russians were doing the same thing: kids playing hide-and-seek amongst the hedgerows, picnickers reclining on the lawns, young lovers kissing under the trees, actors in costumes role-playing for the cameras.

And the fountains! You wouldn’t believe the fountains …

There are 144 of them, I’m told, built back in 1721 … all gravity-fed (not a pump-station to be seen) … and all squirting a combined 36,000 litres of water per minute high into the air. And surrounding the fountains are tumbling waterfalls, flowing staircases and marble-and-gold statues galore. We paused on the Palace Balcony, marvelled at the Grand Cascade, ogled

Samson’s Fountain, cooled off in the wafting spray, took far more photos than anyone at home would ever want to see, and headed back to our cruise-ship feeling strangely grateful to Tsar Peter the Great.

We had read about him years ago in that wonderful book, The Bronze Horseman … but now it almost felt like we’d MET him!

(John Cooney)
