Dear Parents and Carers

‘We are male by birth, we are men by age, we are gentlemen by choice.’

Congratulations to our Deputy Principal – Pastoral, Mr John Doolan, and his Pastoral Team on a very effective launch of our annual anti-bullying campaign. As I have said on many occasions, no school or Principal can claim that bullying will not, or does not, happen in a school. It is a measure of a school as to what is done when bullying does occur, but just as importantly, what proactive measures are taken to prevent bullying. The theme ‘One Call Away’ is a powerful theme and should reinforce the level of support we at the College have for anyone who is doing it a bit tough.

Parenting author, Maggie Dent, wrote an excellent article recently called ‘It takes a mindless society to raise a heartless bully’. Dent reports ‘the most important protection schools can build is having a strong play-based curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12. The more play, the better the chances that children and adolescents can develop emotional and social skills. The more a school does to build relationships, the better the school culture will be and less bullying.’

Our extensive co-curricular programme at Ignatius Park provides the ‘play’ base of which Dent speaks and significantly contributes to the positive relationships that are a feature at Ignatius Park and provide a deep human connectedness so important for positive self-esteem and growth.

Identity & MissionLentPrayer, Fasting and Almsgiving - our call to three aspects of Lent. What do you give yourself as a mid-Lent ‘report card’? I have been heartened by a number of conversations with our young men here at Ignatius Park about Lent being more than giving up sweets, what it is that they are giving and doing at home this Lent. Hopefully these remarks resemble your sons. We can always re-orientate ourselves to this season as we prepare for Easter and the highpoint of our year.

Edmund Rice Awards – Seeking 2016 NominationsOn Wednesday 23 March, we shall be having an Easter Liturgy followed by a day celebrating the legacy of Edmund Rice. As part of this Liturgy, we acknowledge those in both the school community and in the wider community (parents and friends) who have served the College in the spirit of Edmund Rice.

All College community members are invited to nominate adults who, in your opinion, fulfil the criteria of humble service of others in the spirit of Edmund Rice, following Jesus’ example to Ignatius Park College. Please note this is for adults only and students are recognised at the end of the Year.

On receipt of nominations, the College Leadership Team will discern Award recipients for each year. Your nomination should state simply their name, your name and your reasons for nominating them in respect of the criteria. Easter Liturgy & Edmund Rice Day

We will gather as a College on Wednesday 23 March at 11am for our Easter Liturgy. Our Year 10 Drama students are preparing to present the Stations of the Cross for us in a creative way. This prayer service moves away from a performance to being an ancient devotion of our faith. Our musicians shall lead us in our prayers. All members of the College community are welcome.

At this time we shall also focus upon the inspiration of Edmund Rice and his following of Christ, which still inspires us today. As part of this, we will create an iMovie of ‘Edmund’s Inspiration Alive Today’. For this, we welcome any photos or short video clips that could be used. Specifically, where Edmund’s inspiration of a faith in Jesus enlivened today, could be highlighted. If you have any photos, short videos or commentary to be included, please send material to Julie Owen, julie.owen@ipc.qld.edu.au.

Caritas AustraliaDominic (36), from the Jiwaka Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) with his wife and four children, faced many challenges in their region, including inequality, alcohol abuse and violence. However, through participation in the Caritas Australia supported Community Conversations program, Dominic has achieved peace and increased respect for people in his village, and has been able to contribute to a wider reduction of violence and domestic abuse.

“When we start to realise we have power to stand independently to change ourselves, help ourselves, we feel liberated,” says Dominic.

This Lent, we can empower people like Dominic to create a better future. There are still many other communities throughout PNG where generational poverty leads to inequality, poverty and violence. Our support for Project Compassion will amplify the voices of vulnerable communities and help them thrive to create a better future for themselves.

Curriculum

Year 11 Geography Natural Disasters Guest Speaker

Students studying Year 11 Geography were recently given the opportunity to listen to Guest Speaker Chris Nitsopolous. Chris is an integral member of the locally founded Oz Cyclone Chasers organisation and is very passionate about this form of natural hazard. Chris has a wide range of experiences dealing with cyclones which includes taking important readings that are often passed on to the Bureau of Meteorology and local community groups in need of weather advice. The presentation was both informative and entertaining and was thoroughly appreciated by the students.

Literacy CornerWhen your child comes across a word they don’t know, they should look it up. Use a dictionary or the internet. Encourage them to share new words and use them in conversation.

Your child should take notes as they read. Introductions, conclusions or topic sentences (the first sentence in a paragraph) are a good place to look for the main ideas.

It is important that children engage with what they are reading. Encourage them to ask questions about what they are reading. They don’t need to know the answer, but by questioning what they are reading, they helping to concrete the content.

Upcoming ExamsFormal exam timetables for all year levels are now finalised and a copy can be found on the school website: www.ipc.qld.edu.au. Please click on the STUDIES link. Exams for all year levels begin Monday 14 March. This is not a stay at home exam period for any year level. All students are expected to be in attendance until the end of Wednesday, 23 March. If any students are absent for these exams they must have a medical certificate (Year 11 or 12) or a detailed note in the diary (Years 7 – 10) explaining this absence. We will then attempt to hold the exam later in the term when time permits. It is important to note that it is a general working policy of the College to hold exams all year levels up until the last day of student attendance in each year level, except for variations in regards to Work Placement. Please organise family trips around these times if at all possible. Good luck to all students in their upcoming assessments!

ReportsTerm 1 Reports will be distributed on Friday 15 April by email. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Parent/Teacher evening on Wednesday 27 April. Details regarding these interviews will be sent when reports are distributed.

National Literacy and Numeracy Testing (NAPLAN)Year 7 and 9 Parents and Carers should be aware that national testing in Literacy and Numeracy will be carried out this year from 10 - 12 May. There are five different test papers worked on over the three day period. The purpose of the testing is to give individual students a report on how they are progressing in two key areas of learning, namely, Literacy and Numeracy. An individual report will be distributed later in the year. The College is adapting our programs in English and Maths to best prepare the boys for the exams. This is Federal Government testing and we are asked that school and family arrangements be cleared for this three day period if at all possible. The tests will be conducted in Year 7 classrooms (Year 7) or the Hall (Year 9) on the morning of those three days. Our focus area for NAPLAN in 2016 is spelling, in both Years 7 and 9. We wish to improve in this area and help the boys develop in this key skill. All Faculties are working through spelling activities appropriate to their subject area. This week, 107 of our students are developing vital workplace knowledge and skills through industry placement at a wide range of North Queensland businesses. Whilst traditional trades in construction, engineering and electrical are popular we also have boys undertaking work in hospitality, plumbing, IT, logistics, painting, furniture building, demolition and aviation.

This week represents the first of six industry placement blocks that our VET pathway boys will undertake this year. The placement program at Ignatius Park College is quite unique in North Queensland and potentially provides our boys with a head start over students from other schools.

A huge thanks must be extended to all the businesses that agree to take our students for industry placement. Without their support this program, and the outcomes for our students, would not be possible.

Big History Design Partner School Program

During 2016, Ignatius Park College has been asked to be a part of The Big History Design Partner School Program. This program has carefully selected a cohort of 20 highs schools from across Australia out of the hundreds who are implementing the Big History Project in the classroom. This program is by invitation only and on behalf of the Big History Institute, Macquarie University. Design Partner schools work closely with the Big History Institute competing surveys and unit logs available on the Big History Project website to iterate and refine the course. This feedback goes directly to the Big History Project in America to inform decision making processes regarding suggested refinements and improvements to enable the course and materials to better meet the needs of students. To receive an invitation to be a part of this program is indeed a privilege for the boys and myself. I look forward to working with Macquarie University and indeed if parents have feedback that they wish me to pass onto the Big History Institute please feel free to contact me at the College.

ADF STUDENTS’ ROCK CLINICWe are excited about the DTM program for Term 1 which offers the “ADF Students Rock Clinic”. Jason Baillie, guitarist from “King Social”, the band which has recently featured on Australia’s Got Talent will be leading this initiative. The clinic will take place on 8 March at 3.30pm. Students will need to return their permission forms to me as soon as possible.

PastoralAnti-Bullying Campaign

Last week saw the Ignatius Park Seniors for 2016 successfully launch our Anti Bullying Campaign. This year’s theme, ‘One Call Away,’ was well received by the school body, as it was explained to them that help is only one call away. A call is made to attract someone’s attention. To attract their attention to you. The call is demonstrated in a number of ways. Such as talking to a teacher, a trusted adult, a senior, a buddy, a peer mentor, or even blue walling it through the College website. The call isn’t exclusive to the target either, the innocent bystander has more of a responsibility of calling for help.

To constantly remind the students of Ignatius Park College that help is only One Call Away, the Year 7s were given a postcard to keep in their Diary and posters are spreading around the school walls. A full sized telephone box was also built, painted ‘Iggy Blue’ and emblazoned with our catchcry One Call Away to symbolise and remind the students of the numerous ways that help is available here at The Park.

On behalf of the Senior Cohort, Prefects and School Captains, I would like to thank the two VET boys, Dwight Hawken and Daniel Fraser, for donating their time to help build the telephone box. I would also like to thank Mr Van Dorsselaer and Mr Sim for their assistance also, the task took a considerable amount of time to complete and their valuable assistance was very much appreciated. I would also like to thank Mr Brown for editing the video, which can be found through the school’s Facebook Page. The launch was also successfully documented on the Local Channel 9 News.

Co-curricularRugby League Report

First XIIIThe First XIII played their first game of the Aaron Payne Cup yesterday against bitter rivals Kirwan State High. Tensions are always high as these two teams battle to gain early bragging rights in the 2016 season. The boys have certainly done all the right things at training since the beginning of Term 4 last year and looked forward to finally going into battle against Kirwan. Iggy Park made an explosive effort in the first half with good defensive sets which kept Kirwan at bay. Unfortunately we went down in the second half and struggled to regain possession. Enemarki Shibasaki has been appointed the First XIII Captain for 2016 and is ably supported by Tom McCagh as his Deputy. Both boys are very deserving of this honour and will lead the side throughout this year with pride, passion and in true ‘Iggy Spirit’. The team were presented their match jerseys from Iggy Old boy and NRL Premiership winner, Michael Morgan on Sunday night. They now look forward to a double header in Rockhampton next Wednesday.

U15The boys had a tough week on the training paddock refining combinations in preparation for the opening game of the Cowboys Challenge played against Kirwan State High School as part of the North Queensland Trials yesterday. Coach Groves has the boys fit, strong, confident and ready to go. The Under 15s made a winning start against Kirwan, 18-16. A near perfect opening half saw the boys go into the break, up 18-0. The Kirwan side showed a lot of spirit and almost stole a draw on the final siren. Congratulations to the following boys who were selected in the North Queensland Schoolboys Team: Cameron Bateup, Sam Nimmo, Michael O’Brien, Adrian Trevilyan, Mark Gardiner, Riley Maddern, Joey Jensen and Noah Power.

U14It was a more relaxed week for the Ignatius Park College U14’s, with Mr Gaston’s team enjoying a bye and chance to refresh ahead of their game against Pimlico next week. For Mr Geaney and Mr Brown’s team it was a different story, however, as they took on Kirwan State High in a fiercely fought encounter. The boys were full of confidence after a comfortable win over Pimlico the week before, and carried this effort through into the game against Kirwan.

U13In the Under 13 age group, Ignatius Park College White ran out winners over Pimlico State High 50 – 10. In what was a great overall team effort, the boys found their groove in attack running in some outstanding team tries. Players to impress were Jai Hill, Aiden Scott and Ryley Musumeci, although several other names could easily have been mentioned in what was an impressive team effort. The boys then followed up this win the following week with a gutsy team effort to win 28-6 over Kirwan SHS with only 13 men. Jake McAuliffe led from the front and stood out in the middle to take 3 MVP points. Special mention to Jordan Davies (2 MVP) and our smart halves Maverick Pegararo and James Yardley (1 MVP each). The boys played to our strengths on the edges and scored some great tries through skilful speedy backline movements.

Ignatius Park College Blue were also victorious on Wednesday afternoon. Despite being low on numbers due to Year 7 camp, the boys really worked hard for each other, eventually running out winners 20 – 0. Preston Brown was impressive for Ignatius Park College as was Kmani Levi.

U12Ignatius Park College produced their strongest game of the season to date, defeating Ryan Catholic College 28-4 on Wednesday afternoon. Ryan were first to score and looked threatening from the kick off. Our boys made a good effort in defence with Cieron Cuthbert-Botha screaming across from fullback to make a try-saving tackle. Eden Hess, Cody Sadler and Kuresa Fota Pio made outstanding individual efforts both in attack and defence. The boys played their best footy in the second half of the game. Next week IPC play against Kirwan 1. The boys are looking forward to another shot at their arch rivals after a first up defeat in Round 1.

Maths  Explains  Our  World  is  a  hands-­‐on  and  interactive  series  of  afternoon  workshops  for  high  achieving  Year  Eight  students.  During  these  innovative  sessions  participants  will  experience  how  maths  is  used  in  different  disciplines  at  James  Cook  University.      The  workshops  will  run  for  seven  consecutive  Mondays  in  Term  2  starting  May  9th.  Students  will  have  the  opportunity  to  learn  new  skills  and  enhance  their  ability  to  solve  problems.    

When:  Term  2,  2016,  9  May  to  20  June.  Time:  Monday  4:15  pm  -­‐  5:45  pm  Where:  JCU  Townsville  (details  to  follow)  Cost:  $40  total  

 Places  are  limited  to  20    

 Pairs  of  students  are  encouraged  to  attend  as  buddies  where  they  will  work  together  with  other  students  from  different  Townsville  schools  in  real  life  scenarios.  Prizes  are  on  offer,  along  with  take  home  materials  and  interactive  incentives.

MEOW  

The Townsville Melanoma March is the MIA’s annual fundraising event which aims to create awareness about melanoma and raise vital funds for research. It will be held on Sunday 13th March at Riverway. On-the-day registrations will commence from 8am and the March will start at 9am. There will also be raffles, info, food and entertainment. All money raised will go directly to the MIA.
