Message from Chairman

I participated in celebrating 50th “World Telecommunication and Information

Society Day 2018”, which was held on 17th May 2018 at Loyal College,

Chennai. This event gave me an opportunity learn more about the technical

societies collaboration, this was the IEEE sponsored event and the co-sponsors

were the Institution of Engineers, Institution of Engineering & Technology,

Computer Society of India, Broadcast Engineering Society and Loyal-ICAM.

Wonderful event, series of presentations, which was focused on the trends in

the development of communication technology.

Student Project Funding 2018 was a successful event which was held during April, based on the

experience learned from the past eight years, organizers were nurtured to drive the students for the proto

type product design. In continuation IEEE Madras section is involved in collaborating with the

education institution and industry for the development of real-time product useful to the society. It is

planned to have two products, Wearable Companion Device for Autistic Patients of R.M.K Engineering

College and Development of Robo Hydro-Jetter Cum Cutter For Replacement of Manual Scavenging,

S.A. Engineering College. This is the remarkable contributions from the education institutions to reach

the society through the young aspirant Engineers of student community. I am looking forward for the

participation of SPF 2018-19 to make it as a healthy competition for the future, online registration will

be invited during first week of August 2018.

Faculty participators are very much in need to rejuvenate the existing system, operating procedure needs

transparent with better communication. IEEE organized virtual meetings with different occasions and

found most effective, expecting to extend it further for the proposed conference kind of activities. Such

is the case, few nodal centers can be planned from the different regions of Tamil Nadu to participate,

interact, express their views for the improvement the quality and the service request pending for

disposal.

It was expressed during execom meetings that there is a shortfall in student members strength, which is

not the good practice to activate them by giving gifts or complementary concessions to enroll them. I

strongly believe that they need a motivational talk from the senior members and the student members

recognized and awarded for their contributions during their course of studies. I thank Dr. Joseph

Gladwin S, for his contributions as the Editor, IEEE Madras section’s Newsletter, information received

were properly compiled with quality of images. I request organizers to send the contents of events

organized by SBs and IEEE Madras section’s approved programs in time and the format recommended.

Looking forward for your contributions, volunteer services and my best wishes to all.

Message from Editor

Greetings..!

The May edition of IEEE MAS Newsletter is published. The month of May was a

vacation period and so there has been a drop in terms of number of events

organised in colleges. Yet it is interesting to understand that few colleges have

organized some events during this month. IEEE activities at colleges keep the

student community vibrant and technically updated.

I wish to state that the college can organise events that will enhance skills besides conceptual

understanding. Events that would enhance student’s skills, leadership qualities, interpersonal behaviour,

critical thinking in addition to theoretical concepts shall be considered as they would relatively improve

the employability. There are more potential advantages and opportunities with IEEE and still a better

understanding and awareness is required by the students to appreciate and enjoy the benefits. At section

level, there are plans to coordinate events to enhance awareness on the benefits of IEEE to students and

faculty members.

The guidelines for reporting events have already been circulate in previous newsletters and also by mail.

Still some colleges do not follow the appropriate format in event reporting. I once again request all SB

counsellors to follow the guidelines at https://goo.gl/ySHbmA and https://goo.gl/esoKBL.

All are requested to kindly adhere to the new norms for timely release of Newsletters. It shall be noted that

inclusion of topics into Newsletter is at the discretion of Editorial team.

Two Days Workshop on ‘Conceptual Practices of IoT & AI

for Engineering Applications’ on 4th & 5

th May 2018 was

conducted by the Department of Electrical and Electronics

Engineering in association with IEEE Students Branch,

Power Electronics Society and Industrial Electronics

Society. The workshop was graced by Dr. B. Babu

The resource persons for the workshop was Mr. M.

Workshop on Internet of Things (IoT)

Department of ECE in association with IEEE Madras

section organized the Three days Workshop on Internet

of Things (IoT) for Real Time Applications - Case Study

Approach conducted on 23rd

May 2018- 25th May

2018.Totally 28 participants from 16 engineering

colleges and 1 polytechnics benefited through workshop.

workshop is to intend to impart knowledge in the IoT in

the field of security application.

The hands on training are provided in the different sensors with Raspberry Pi board. Advanced applications

included in the workshop to provide knowledge on current industrial trends.

(ICOEI 2018)”

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering and IEEE

Student Branch of SCAD College of Engineering and Technology

organized two days “International Conference on Trends in

Electronics and Informatics (ICOEI 2018)” during 11.05.2018 and

12.05.2018. Keynote speakers were Dr. Suma. V, Dean, Research

and Industry Incubation Centre, Professor, Department of

Information Science and Engineering, Dayananda Sagar College of

Engineering, Bangalore, India and Mr.R.Valanarasu, Senior

Consultant, Enterprise Application Services, Infosys Ltd. A total of

more than 200 participants attended the event and benefited.

KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology

Training Program

IEEE Students’ Branch (School Code: 60107085) and the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

of KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology in association with Power Projects conducted a training

program on “Dialux Software” from May 23rd

, 2018 to May 26th , 2018. The Head of the Department and the

IEEE branch counselor Dr.V.Kumar Chinnaiyan welcomed the gathering and Dr.K.Bommanna Raja, Principal

presided over the function. Dr.S.Ramkumar, Dean (Academics & Administration), felicitated the gathering.

Er. S. Hari Haran and team from Power Projects handled the sessions. Around 55 students and 10 faculty

members attended the program. Sessions included introductory overview of renewable energy sources and its

utilization. Best performers were appreciated with small mementos.

Tips and Tricks of Andragogy

IEEE Students’ Branch (School Code: 60107085) and the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

of KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology organized one day seminar on “Tips and Tricks of

Andragogy” on May 19th, 2018. The Dr.J.Karpagam Professor/Department of EEE welcomed the gathering and

Dr.S.Ramkumar, Dean (Academics & Administration), presided over the function. Dr.V. Kumar Chinnaiyan

the Head of the Department and the IEEE branch counselor handled the sessions which included the need for

changing from pedagogy to andragogy, various technological effects on present learning environment, various

techniques of andragogy teaching were emphasized. Activity based sessions also provided faculty an easy

Faculty Development Program

IEEE Madras Section and IEEE SB of Kalasalingam Academy of

Research and Education have organised a Faculty Development

Program on the topic of “Software Tools for Simulation and

Analysis of Power System” during 24-26th May 2018 at the

University Campus. The inaugural function of the FDP

programme was held on 24th May 2018 at 9.30 am. The Chief

Guest for the inaugural function was Er. R Paneer Selvam,

General Manager /Projects, Indus High Power Consultancies.

He pointed out the advancement of software tools in the study of power system and their real world

applications. The chief guest released the course material.

Seminar on Antenna Measurements and Diagonostics

IEEE Student Branch and ECE department has organized one

day seminar on 4th May 2018. Dr.D.C.Pande, Distinguished

scientist, DRDO, Bengaluru was the chief guest for the

seminar. Dr. D. Srinivasan, Principal, welcomed the gathering.

Then Dr. Pande shared his views on Antenna measurements

and Diagnostic facilities. He also shared recent research going

on in DRDO and motivates the young faculties and students to

do research. The faculties and students from various reputed

institutions have participated and benefited from this seminar.

IEEE Student Branch and ECE department has organized one

day seminar on 11th May 2018. Dr.S. Suganthi, Professor/ECE,

Christ University, Bangalore, Dr. Queen Surajini Rajendran,

Research Faculty, NTU, Singapore and Dr. S. Raghavan,

Senior Professor, Department of ECE, NIT were the chief

guests for the seminar. Dr. S. Kuppusamy, Executive Director,

started the session by sharing the importance of doing

research. Resource persons

Dr. Queen Surajini Rajendran and Dr. S. Raghavan shared their views on MATLAB programming and its

applications on various fields. Then Dr. S. Suganthi delivered a lecture on the topic Characteristics of fractal

antennas and Meta material analysis using MATLAB. The faculties and students from various reputed institutions

One Day National level Workshop on “MATLAB”

The Department of ECE organized a One day National Workshop on

“MATLAB” in Association with FX IEEE Student Branch on

30.05.2018, Mr M.Udaya Shankar Prabhu Head – Business

Development, CAE Chennai and Kazi Yaser Arafat are the Resource

persons for the Workshop. The Welcome Address was given by the

Convener of the event, Mrs.R.Vedhapriyavadhana, HOD/ECE. The

Presidential address was given by Principal, Dr.K.Ganesan and the

importance of MATLAB and its features were highlighted by Dr.

Caroline Viola Stella Mary M, Professor /IT. Totally 40 faculty

members has participated in the workshop from our group of

institutions.
