When the physicist, Richard Feynman wasnear death, he remarked that it might takeyears and years for him to really diebecause he was spread out among so manypeople's minds and memories. The samething is true of Ed.
Our sincere condolences to his wife andfour young sons and the entire Bulowfamily.

INMEblQRlAu\1Sadly we report the passing of one of ourmembers, ED BULOW. Ed's smile and"always wanting to help attitude" will besorely missed, as well as the fine plants hegrew and showed. By the line of mournersat the funeral home, one could see that hislife, unjustly short, was nonetheless a fullone and a large one and that he received alot of joy from it.

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE .~ -~by
LEO SCHORDJE
"Seize the Day", the informal 'talk thatDr. Ben Berliner held during our workshopis certainly one of the most eloquent andemotional speeches we have had in a while. His years of experience and long history ofsocial activism(he's got a long resume inenvironmental, public health, and socialissues) certainly give him the moral authorityto say the things he does. Between Ben
Berliner and Fred Case w~hiave. had twoextraordinary and inspirational speakers. If Iread the crowd right, many of you got firedup. The question is, "What are we going todo?" ~. ~
There are things, personal a.i<:i private, that we each can do. There are things theSociety can do. I want you, the members, tomake sure that your Society does act. Theonly way it will is if you, the members, become actively involved and make sure ideasget I;:xplored and come to fruition. I waspleased that two members joined the Conservation Committee after the meeting, and aregoing to start exploring ideas. We alwaysneed more volunteers. The 10S has no paidemployees; everything we do is done byunpaid volunteers. Everyone on the Boardhas a full plate going, so it is up to your tomake sure things don't go by the wayside. Ihope this new charge of energy evolves intosteady on-going action. After the meeting Ihad to sit and make notes for a half hour justto rnake sure I didn't forget any suggestions.
The 10S is always pleading for morevolunteers but occasionally I hear thatsomeone tried to volunteer and never heard
back.. Sorry! This does happen; we are abunch of ordinary people, often a bit disorgan-

JoeD's award is his first so we want to
congratulate him....it's been a long timecoming. Adequately done, Joe! MeanwhileJoel E earned the first quality award evergranted to H.dentata. You might look at itswhite flowers, note the clonal name, and thinkof white tie. Nope! Joel named it after hiscat. Do you recognize our commercialmember, Orchid Outlet? No? It's justBarry Jones' stage name. I can think of atleast one other awarded plant that came fromOrchid Outlet, but this might be the first thatwent to Barry rather than to a customer. Inany case, congratulations!!!
We brought 113 plants to the Decembermeeting at Hausermann' s--70-greenhousegrown and 43-lightstand grown. LaimaSahagian took Plant-Of-The-Monthhonors inthe greenhouse category for her Lipariscondylobulbon. Joe Dixler (him again?) won
Plant-Of- The-Month in the lightstand categoryfor his Liparis nutans.(Very adequate, Joe)':.
You know, most orchid societies don't have amember who's ever seen an actual Liparit;'lefalone a member who grows one. Liparis is apretty dam rare genus. Hey,J?;l,lJ.",we'retheIOS! So three of our members brought suq, hplants in for show-n-telllast month and two ofthem were so well grown that they won PlantOf -The-Month honors! Now it happens thatL.condylobulbon 'Henry Shaw' CCMJAOSarrived about three years ago and, believe m~,it grows like a weed(true to its award).Everyone can get a division of this clone, butso far Laima's grown it best.
And yes, Virginia, there's,a knock-down-drag, i &',em-out battle for first going on in the Greenhouse Category. The leader du jour is Jodi
Hirt who collared Laima Sahag!!lD la~month. Both of the frontrunners put somedaylight between themselves and Sue GOlan. But Sue is our defending champion for thepast generation or so, and I expect that she isjust gathering her strength for a stretch drivewhere she will pull out all the stops. Youknow, Sue was in Mexico when the Christmas
party was taking place. When she told meshe'd have to miss the meeting, I teased,"Hey, send a dish anyway." Sue sent plants tothe meeting instead.

Illinois Orchid SocietySpring Show ~ ';;:';'"
"A Kaleidoscope oL.'Colors"
Weare ready again to treat the world toour very special event--one that is a lot of fun andvery rewarding. The learning process of puttingon one of these shows never stops--and theinformation we gain about orchids is endless.
As you can see from the list of jobs on'theVolunteer Sign-Up Sheet which preceeds thisarticle, there is something for every member. Andthe friendships that result from working shoulder,to shoulder with other orchid growers is justanother plut. We learn ., from each other ~~continually.
This is our BIG show(until our really BIGMid-American event comes along,in the Spring of1997). This March at the beautifUt Chic~Botanic Garden thert: will be approximately '50exhibits and 45 or more vendors displaying andselling a wide range of orchid plants and growingmaterials and dispensing information. (Never mindthat the last jewel of growing knowledge yougleaned was the complete opposite of your mostrecent tidbit. In the end you try them all, and atsome point you get to a stage where you'rebringing in plants to add to the IOS exhibit or evensetting up your own display).
So, let's get those faxes and letters comingin. I'll be waiting to confirm your work times. And, I'll see you in March when the fun begins. We'd like this to be an enjoyable and profitableshow for all our participants.
