The barriers should be ap-preciated, and integrated with other networks to ensure it is not a barrieranymore. The barrier then becomes a part of the whole area.Defining the edges - tool to make more connection to edges, facilities, and tocreate an intimate environmentDefinining space by creating edges is a well known traditional tool. It canbe succesfully used in many designs. It generates awareness of the sur-roundings so I found this tool very useful. 26. central places RidderkerkINTERnetworks / ACTING town - Community - centersLocationCondition Design ReflectionRediscovering IJsselmondes Dikestructure 27. central places RidderkerkINTERnetworks/ ACTING town - Community - centersLocation Condition Design Reflection Local qualities, regional problemsDistribution of Facilities + industiral economic zone 1. It is wellconnected with AHOY and residential districts on the southeast part of IJsselmonde. It is important to look two directional to the area: top down and bottom up. The solutions of these problem statements are sustainable at economical, social and environmental levels. These levels have all to do with each other. Looking from the top down the Stadium Park has a very interesting location in the network. It is situated next to a national railway network between important places on local and regional scale that are already connected with a metro. Next to this, it already is an important place with many sports activities. Some of them are nowadays attractive on a national scale. The area could be an important place in compare to other complementary places that are related with the network . These arguments are the reason that we take the chance to enforce this place inside the network by giving the place an Intercity, tram and metro station. This will also generate a better economical climate for residential and offices. The bottom up approach in the design of Stadium Park has to do with the spatial integration, where huge barriers are removed. In the design the activity is stenghtened by adding different mainly sporting facilities. The place will become more an attractor for different people from local, regional and national origin. Research shows us that the surrounding neighbourhoods demand for more sports facilities for young people. This is why there are many sporting fields, a youth center and other important public facilities designed in the plan. This area would function as a lo- cal meeting point between different people. The attraction of different groups of people with the relation with sport makes it an important and recognizable spot. Furthermore we can link the social sustainability to the economic vitality. A place with a fine social climate is also interesting for offices to settle in. Because of spatial and network interventions there is a better climate arround the area to exploit, think about residential and offices. This makes it possible to densify the centrality, whereby the surroundings will focus to it. This concentration will contravene the urban sprawl, what happened the last 30 years in the island. A specific example is visible by the recreational sporting fields of amateur clubs. They are not shifted to the edges of the city, because they have a certain value for the neighbourhood. Furthermore it would be strange if a sport area has not the quality to handle with the local amateur clubs. 88. central placesINTERnetworks / ACTINGSynergy between bottom up and top down elements ICM Evaluation:MMM IC MMM M MM MMM MM MM M During the proces the strenght of this project has been M MMMMMIC MMM proven to be its two directional approach of top downMM M M M Top - Down: and bottom up elements. Theinhabitants can profit from diverse centralities.Furthermore, a diversity of activities is brought together in one place and attracts adiverse group of people. It provides the possibility for people of the surrounding areasto meet at the centralities.Economic vitalityFirst we can link the social sustainability to the economic vitality. If we create a betterenvironment for people to live, it also becomes more attractive for offices and newinhabitants. This will generate a natural knock on effect for investments. Theeconomic activities are concentrated at different centralities, being well representedon both regional and national scale.Water storage (environmental sustainability)By strengthening the centralities, located mostly in the centre of urbanized areas, thesurroundings will focus inwards. This contravenes the urban sprawl, what happenedthe last 30 years in the island. Therefore a coherent framework of open landscape willbe remained. Open areas can be used for water storage.
