The former Natural History Museum which used to showcase the richness of Rwanda’s Nature (fauna and flora products) has changed the theme of exhibition into Kandt House Museum by dis-playing Rwandan history during German colonial occupation (1884- 1916). This museum is dedicated to Dr. Richard Kandt a German doctor and explorer who embarked on an exploration of Rwanda in 1897 searching specifically for the source of Nile River. He later became the First German Resident in Rwanda in 1908 and lived in the house transformed into a museum today. The new exhibition on “Rwanda and Germany from colonial epoch to today” is made of col-lections such as texts, pictures, songs that were used in Rwanda under the German colonization epoch brought back recently in the country in cooperation with “Le Jumelage Rhenanie- Palatinat” and German Embassy. The exhibition is also supported by documentary films regarding Rwandan history in that time. High official and diplomatic personalities including Ambassadors, Senators, representatives of Government and private institutions operating in tourism industry attended its colorful opening ceremony taken place on 17th December 2017. In his speech, the Director General of Rwanda Museums recognized the incomparable support in the preparations and set up of the exhibition offered by two institutions and different individuals who worked tirelessly on it. He invited our partners in tourism industry and schools to make use of it by visiting and learn much from this new exhibition. In his remarks, Amb. Dr Peter Woeste appreciated the collaboration with INMR in setting up of this nw exhibition and called up on everyone interested in this shared heritage to come and visit the museum.

Hands-On Experience, an opportunity for learning and having fun

Pg9

Hands-on Experience is a cultural activity that took place from 4th to 8th December 2017 at Ethnographic Museum in Huye District with an aim of training individuals about some aspects of Rwandan Culture to preserve it.

2500 people attended this activity within different disciplines including traditional dance, drum beat, traditional crafts such as weaving, beading, etc. Apart from traditional skills, hands on experience participants got an opportunity to learn modern digital art with professional software. Participants in this activity witness that they got relevant skills and knowledge that can be applied to the labor market to generate income as well as having fan during the whole week of duration. These participants mostly composed with youth, enjoyed traditional games such as: Kunyaban-wa, High jump, Gukirana, Igisoro, etc. Even though some of these games such as: Kunyabanwa and Gukirana which from the past were practiced by cattle keepers seem like fighting, partici-pants gave us the moral lessons they got from it. It is all about own defence in case the enemy attacks you.

Iradukunda Pascaline and Munezero Jacky aged 13 who practiced weaving said that they come without any experience about this. But they ended up by making very nice handmade mats ready to be sold. Other participants who interacted with us acknowledged the organizers but they re-quested the management of Institute of National Museums of Rwanda and Huye District to extend those activities for at least three weeks in the next time.

Kwizera Jean Damascene who practiced ceramic workshops said what he learnt can respond to the development and improvement of “made in Rwanda” products as they can produce high qual-ity ceramic products compared to some from outside of the country. In his closing remarks, Amb. Robert Masozera the Director General of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda (INMR) told Huye local residents that this activity was organized to make them familiar with museums. He said “during your previous visits you were not allowed to take photos and touching exhibition but now you can feel how some of the collections were made from identifying raw materials to their fabrication”. He also said that “this activity facilitates the transmission of some aspects of Rwandan Culture from one generation to another as it is the main mission of INMR”. Hands-On Experience kept busy students who are in holidays and it equipped them with good attitudes and values for a Rwandan. It is in line with “Intore mu biruhuko” pro-gram. He added.

Kayiranga Muzuka Eugene, the Mayor of Huye District acknowledged the contribution of INMR to culture development and highlighted the importance of Hands On Experience in terms of skills and knowledge related to traditional crafts that can contribute to economic development, right values among Young generation as well as being an enjoyable place for people. Hands on Experience is an annual cultural activity organized by INMR to train people especially youth and students in holidays about some aspects of Rwandan culture.
