Like many of us, I grew up watching a lot of movies and sitcoms based on American col-lege life, often involving sports. They were in-strumental in shaping what I expected of uni-versity; crazy fratparties, beautiful girls, crazy adventures, and epic sports matches won in the last moment of the game were what I an-ticipated for my time at tertiary education.

Upon coming to university however, many peo-ple find that the movies are very different from reality. Van Wilder and Old School never had scenes where the characters spent days in the library learning stats, or found themselves in a tut with not one good-looking person.

But although some of us come to find university very different from the stories we see on TV, for some of us, our experiences really do match or exceed the fictional tales we’ve been raised on.

Granted, not everybody gets into res or can always make it to the tennis club parties. But the one thing which we can all be a part of is the Ikeys. On Mondays UCT lays hosts to its very own Friday Night Lights, a spectacle every bit as ex-citing and dramatic as anything we’ve watched.

We have it all; the history, the hectic atmosphere and warm summer evenings, the specta-tors and beautiful characters, and the inspirational tales.

Since its inception in 2008, The Varsity Cup has provided UCT students with a story straight off the silver screen. Our first year was perhaps our most remarkable as we came into the tourna-ment seeded last, with nobody expecting much from us. Against all odds and expectations the Ikeys topped the table and won a semi-final in probably the most dramatic game I’ve ever seen, winning 32-31 with a last movement penalty. W e went on to lose the final in the last movement of the game, but finally made things right as we won the Cup last year, capping off a 4 year jour-ney far more epic than I’ve watched.

There are times in life, and indeed even in the colourful years of university , when things are dull or disappointing. But for all of those who paint themselves blue and go out to support the Ikeys, we get to live in a movie for a little. And in years to come as we look back at our time at university ,the warm glow of excitement and drama of the Green Mile will linger on far longer than anything we’ve watched on a screen.

MONDAY Night LightS

by Anton Taylor - a notorious Ikeys poet, who has opened his blue and white heart to share this beautiful love story. When he is not getting arrested in Stellenbosch, Anton likes jolling in the UCT rugby 3rd team and in the Internal league.

What is an Ikey? You are an Ikey, you applied at UCT and got in - well done. Legend says that early last century there were a lot of jewish kids at UCT who were mocked as the Izaaks - the Ikeys - their varsity mates adopted the name and it stuck. They in turn came up with the name Maties for the maroon clad taMaties from Stellenbosch University. Rivalry - epic!

What is the Varsity Cup? The FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International is a tournament of the top 8 rugby playing universities in SA. It was started in 2008 and features US College style Monday night sports action. The mantra is “Rugby that Rocks” - entertainment. The top 4 teams play semi finals and finals. The Ikey Tigers are the current champions, having made the final twice

previously. The 2011 final, was attended by 20 000 people at the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria. Most matches are televised on Supersport.

What is the Green MileThe Green Mile is the stretch of rugby fields on UCT’s upper campus. The A-field on the side of the sports center is where most of the action happens. 8000 supporters in blue and white - you get the picture.

I don`t like rugby, mehDo you like being alive, being a student and having a vibe? Then come down to the games - unless you want to be the only emo stuck in res. It is about the “student experience” - the rugby takes care of itself.

When are the games and events? All fixtures are on the center pages of this mag. Make sure you ‘like’ the Ikey Tigers on facebook.com/ikeytigers and follow @ikeyti-gers and you will know what’s happening.

I don`t know any war cries.Easy. All Tiger Treffers are on the last page of this fan guide. A UUUUUU!

Get the kit: on jammie plaza,

and at all home games on the

green mile - stock is very limited - get it early.

spraydays for overalls will

happen at reses and at the home games - before kick off - you`ll

get stencils, spraypaint and a

white overall to go mad with.

hoW to...the indispensible guide to being an Ikeys legend. 1. ace your studies - 2. get the most vibe out of this year at varsity

shimlas - Bloemfontein universityThe Shimlas are pretty much the Freestate Cheetah’s Vo-dacom Cup team and anyone knows the Cheetahs are strong and love beating other SA sides. UCT beat them in last year’s semi final in a commanding display on the windy Green Mile and have never lost to them in the Var-sity Cup. There have been tough matches and a draw. Rating: Can beat anyone - but no semi final this year. “A Shimla fell out of the airplane!”Ikey Tigers vs Shimlas - 6 February - 5pm on Green

Mile (TV)Mascot: Felix the CatTiger verdict: Gotta like the felines - got milk?

uJ - university of JohannesburgAnother uni who take their rugby very very seriously. Top-ping the log in 2011 - famously bowling the mighty Maties out of the tournament, they lost in the semi final. Quality side, generally very good value despite their wonderful orange jerseys. Rating: Top 4 - they will run the ball. “A UJ fell out of the airplane!”UJ vs Ikey Tigers - 13. February - 7pm UJ Stadium Mascot: A big orange... hoopoeTiger verdict: Don’t feed the birds.

tut - tshwane university of technologyYou gotta love Blue Bulls rugby! Try dominate up front and hope for Morne Steyn. The Pretoria based outfit came last in 2011 and scraped past the relegation beat-ing Varsity Shield champions CUT in injury time. Rating: The Stakes have been raised with one team being au-tomatically relegated so there is nowhere to hid - the Vi-kings will however likely raid the bottom end of the log. “A Viking fell out of the airplane!”TUT Vikings vs Ikey Tigers - 20 February - 7pm - TUT

Stadium. Mascot: A VikingTiger verdict: Note to self, the Vikings discovered Iceland, America and Tshwane.

NMMu - Madibaz from Pe The Madibaz have recently moved one up from being the wooden spooners of the competition. Their local league is not the strongest and they are just too friendly - being from the friendly city - to take too many points. Rating: Ex-pect further improvement - but not enough to challenge. “A Madiba fell out of the airplane!” (is this PC?)NMMU Madibaz vs Ikey Tigers - 27 February - 7pm NMMu stadium (TV)Mascot: Dolphin

Tiger verdict: They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning .

NWu Pukke - North West university We have had some tight battles with the proud team from the quaint village called Potchefstroom. The 2008 semi final was a nailbiter which the Ikey Tigers won in the last minute. In 2009 the Pukke got the better of us again on the Green Mile. Rugby is massively important at the Pukke, it’s not like they can go surfing, or to the operah. The Pukke are the 2011 SA Club Champions - respect. Rating: Always tough and back in semi final contention. “A Puk fell out of the airplane!”Ikey Tigers vs NWU-Pukke - 5 March - 5pm Green Mile at UCT (TV)Mascot: A Guniea Fowl? Tiger verdict: Another bird? meeow!

Maties - stellenbosch university We love to hate the Maties and they pipped us at the death in 2008 and again by two points in the 2010 final. Our beauti-ful rivalry goes back 100 years and the Intervarsities of old used to fill Newlands stadium. The Maties are three times Varsity Cup Champions and that deserves respect! In 2011 we were better and won. Rating: Always the team to beat! Won’t bow out early again. “A Matie fell out of the airplane!”Maties vs Ikey Tigers - 12. March - 7pm Stellenbosch (TV)Mascot: Pokkel the Squirrel

Tiger verdict: Squirrels - nature’s little speed bumps

tuks - university of PretoriaThe Tuks of Niks are another Blue Bulls outfit from the North, but more in the mould of the winning Blue Bulls of recent years - just without the trophies. Losing finalists in 2011 - their facilities are awesome, their budget is that of a small country’s and the pressure is on for them to deliver a trophy. Rating: The heavies got heavier and will push hard for a semi final spot.“A Tukkie fell out of the airplane!”Ikey Tigers vs Tuks - 19 March - 5pm - Green Mile at UCT (TV)Mascot: Chippie the ChipmunkTiger verdict: Another rodent? Frightening!

the Varsity Cup Points System is different in 2012Try: 5 pointsConversion: 3 pointsPenalty: 2 points

Why? A converted try is now 8 points, a penalty only 2 points.

Previously: Ikeys score a try and convert - 7 points. Tuks kick two penalties - 6 points. Ikeys 7:6 Tuks Now: Ikeys 8:4 Tuks

Tuks now need a try to stay in touch - more tries more running rugby.

so, um, you`re an albino tiger living in Cape town. run me through how you found your-self here?

I once stumbled upon a trance party deep in the bowels of the Indian jungle. After eating one of the hippies I went into a 3 week daze and woke up one morning below Jammie Stairs. I’ve been part of the vibe here ever since.

Why should people support the Ikeys?Because if they don’t I will viciously claw and maim them. Also, we have the best vibe and spirit of any unversity team you’ll ever find. It helps that the team wins, like, everything.

tiger tiger, burning bright, I`ve noticed that your abs are tight! how do you keep your lean physique?

I’m going to ignore your awful Willam Blake ref-erence and agree with you - my abs are bang-ing. Well, as leading sports nutritionists will tell you, diet is everything. I stick to a strict eating plan which ideally consists of ditzy first years and double cane and cokes. No carbs after 5 either.

o!M!G! so it`s true, you really do eat students! how do you pick who to eat?

Well at the beginning of the year the pickings are plentiful. Confused and inebriated students, unac-customed to the large and mysterious grounds of UCT, often find themselves lost in the large looming hallways and upon the open plains of the Green Mile. This is when I pounce. Unfortunately towards the end of the year my prey has generally succumbed to first year spread, which doesn’t help my fitness levels. Apart from the obvious risks of cholesterol and heart disease when I devour them, students are too flabby and lazy to run from me, preferring a mauling death rather than the horror of lumbering up Jammie Stairs as I chase them.

So much for my sprint training. I’m pretty unprej-udiced when it comes to who I eat, but since a

nasty case of feline TB in 2002 I

stay away from Baxter girls, and after my friend Tony (of Frosties fame) died after eating a goth (too many piercings, toxic tattoos etc) I’ve com-pletely cut them out of my diet.

What is your advice for all the fans?Sooner than you care to think you will be fat and tired and boring. You will be locked away in a pris-on-like office, slaving away on jobs you hate for people you resent. Unless of course you studied in the humanities, in which case you’ll be delivering pizza or ‘blogging’. Either way, I promise you, if you don’t live up your varsity days and get involved in student life you will regret if for the rest of your sad human life.

Nothing is more pathetic than having my brunch cry out `I wish I`d jolled more at var-sity` right before I devour it. the Varsity Cup games have the most vibe of any uCt event. Get involved, make friends, and love the Ikeys. We have an amazing university and an amazing team of which we can be very proud.

UCT Old Boy Greg Fury recalls the good old days in the late 1980s, early 1990s. But despite all the changes, he finds that visiting UCT feels like coming home.

Why is it that Varsity rugby is so important to those who played there, even those that went on to greater heights or other clubs in other places? Perhaps because we were on the edge of adulthood, when friends are easily made and are kept for life. Perhaps because rugby teaches much of what is important in our lives: rising to challenges, self-reliance, team-work, meeting defeat, accepting victory, courage and joy. Whatever the reason, my memories of UCT are dominated by Varsity rugby and as with so many others, the friendships formed there are still among those most important to me.We all think rugby was better in our day, but visiting UCT now feels like com-ing home. I don’t sense that the core values are any different to those in my day. I can’t think of any other institution in which excellence and enjoyment, merit and inclusivity so happily co-exist.

Playing in the early 90s the glory days of the 1970s were behind us, but Intervarsity could still pack 40000 into Newlands or the Craven Stadium - complete with bands, cheerleaders, streakers and the famous guy (who had to be from UCT) hang-ing one-armed from the roof of the main stand at

Stellenbosch during most of the main game. No UCT student of the time could possibly forget the famous Intervarsity victory at Newlands in 1990.

Despite the very proud record of UCT RFC, we were the lightning rod for much of the political tension on campus at the time. It was a time of frequent student demonstrations, and as a consequence no police and defence force personnel were allowed on cam-pus. That meant only away games to police and de-fence in pretty hostile environments. To many of our opposing clubs, and particularly these two, we were the “(f...kken) communists on the hill”.

It was also the time when Mitchell’s Brewery start-ed sponsoring UCT RFC, which marked the begin-ning of professionalism, Varsity style. Although we needed cash for bursaries and rugby kit, we found beer most welcome! The endless supply sparked the most legendary rugby club parties as we tried to turn the beers into money. But the shrinkage of stock was staggering.

It was a club that made little distinction between the First XV and the U20 D team and which was filled with characters who gave so much enjoy-ment to those they played and coached with. May it never change.

We can all (well, most of us) throw the odd Frisbee around on the beach on a windless day. But some people are taking it a whole step further.

At UCT Ultimate, the art of Frisbee throwing has assumed an entirely new aspect: here, it’s become a highly competitive, fast paced team sport and was recognised as an official club at

the university in February last year. Currently entering 1-2 competitive teams into the leagues they have still maintained the tradition of casual Friday pickup games. The 1st team consistently finishes in the top 4 at national tournaments with a furiously athletic style that oozes youthfulness. If you are a student of UCT then this should be the club for you.

Ready to compete at the top level? Both the Men’s and Women’s 1st Teams are competitive in the USSA soccer tournament which runs throughout the year. This allows the players the chance to play at the top university level. Games against rival universities such as UWC or Maties often turn into personal battles against the opposite number. At the end of the year teams have the chance to qualify for the Nationals tournament which takes the top two teams in every province based on their performance.

In recent years the UCT Men’s 1st Team has secured a increasingly impressive string of re-sults. The team has won the USSA tournament for two consecutive years, beating Stellenbosch convincingly in the final on both occasions.

The 2011 USSA tournament was conducted in a round-robin format and the UCT Men’s team beat every team at the tournament on their road to victory. Six UCT players were selected as part of the USSA tournament team, reinforcing the quality of the players in the side. The team has also been in the final of every summer and win-ter league for the past four years and won the summer league on two of those occasions.

UCT is an important resource for both provin-cial and national teams as well. Three Western provinces Men’s A team players as well as three South African u20 players come form the UCT ranks.

UCT represents the best University Wa-ter Polo side in the country and aims to

continue to build on their successes. They not only pride themselves on playing good Water Polo but the club is also about build-ing long lasting friendships and continually improving on an already exceedingly en-joyable team spirit.

Supporters and fans of Water Polo are en-couraged to join the club and become a part of the amazing experience that is UCT Qater Polo.

The Jaboolie league represents a fun and social way to become a part of the Water Polo community as it allows both boys and girls to play the game in a more relaxed at-mosphere.

It is a fantastic way to make friends and is guaranteed to be an enjoyable experience.

UCt hOCkeYgreat FUN, great social calendar, great hockey

Whether it’s fast-paced, competitive hockey you’re after or a fun game with your mates, the UCT Hockey Club has it all.

Known for its great vibe both on and off the field, the Hockey Club balances hard train-ing, a high level of play and good sports-manship with an awesome social calendar.

Students and players fill the club-

house on nights of the famous Rus-

sian Bear hockey club parties and

the entertaining floodlit night

games never fail to draw large

crowds to the UCt Astroturf. It is because of this great balance that UCT Hockey attracts top young players, like Grant Robertson, who made his debut in the South African Men’s team in 2011, and Amy

Freakes, who is currently in the ladies under 21 national squad.

The Hockey Club accommodates students of all playing abilities and boasts 14 Exter-nal League teams, competing against the top clubs in Cape Town. Internal League teams that play every Sunday.

The hockey committee also runs a develop-ment portfolio which organises kit drives, holiday clinics and weekly coaching for chil-dren in Khayelitsha.

2012 promises to be an exciting year for the UCT Hockey Club with pre-season training already underway, a few new coaches in the mix, and some talented first years entering both the men’s and la-dies’ squads. The club is looking forward a good season and welcomes new players and supporters.

The UCT rugby club - with is proud tradition since 1882, its many champions and inspi-rational stories has also had its limitations: Where were the women and social mem-bers?

The club has now started the Ikeys Vibe Rugby Social membership with the aim to be a much more open and inclusive sports club and to further build a community around the Ikey Tigers and our other teams.

The rugby club also aims to further add to the UCT student experience through various initi-atves, including active student participation in social sporting tournaments - One Touch and Six Down touch for guys and girls.

UCTRFC gets approached by a couple of women looking to play rugby each year and is now in a position to grow women’s rugby at UCT, initially though touch rugby but in due course conventional rugby.
