THE WHEEL CAFEby Henry Smith
The Wheel Café on Walnut Street in Cincinnati got the last legal
shipment of beer before Prohibition took effect on January 17,
1920. The 18 Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was aboutth
to shut down the brewing industry in the Cincinnati area as well
as all of the United States.
Hundreds of thousands of people were losing their jobs as well
as the beer they were drinking. The German-Americans suffered
the heaviest losses since beer was made mostly by the Germans.
After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 the Bruckmann Brewing
Co. was permitted to deliver the first shipment of Bruck’s real
draft beer to The Wheel Café, located at 537 Walnut St. This
delivery was made during the early morning hours on April 7 .th
At 9am that morning patrons lined up as many as 9 to 15 in a
line to get a quick taste of beer. Mr. McCullough was one of the
bartenders at the Wheel that morning. Years later he would
recall that he had “never before or since seen so many people
line up to get a glass of beer.”
October IKO Show

WE NEED TOKENS !
for the
2011 IKO-TAMS AUCTION
Once again we will be having our mail/bid board/floor auction in conjunction with the October show. AnyIKO-TAMS member is welcome to submit up to 10 lots with a list accurately describing the lots for the mailbidders. Together with the description, please include the condition of the piece. Attributed mavericks shouldinclude source of attribution. Trade tokens are preferred especially unlisted tokens, saloons, BBC, goodtransportation and other “better” items. Lots with an anticipated value of $10.00 or more are eligible. A smallcommission for each lot (10% of selling price or $2.00, whichever is greater) will be retained by IKO-TAMS.
Lots and their listing should be sent to the auction manager (address below) no later than July 1, 2011 forthe lots to receive maximum publicity. When mailing, use appropriate postal insurance. The auction managerreserves the right to refuse any lots which, in his judgment, should be refused. Time is passing ! So hurry –round up your treasures and send them to:

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
October IKO Show
As we go to press there is important news about our 2011
Annual Show. It will be on Friday, October 21 and Saturday,st
October 22 . This is a little later in the month than usual so asnd
to avoid conflicting with the ANA show in Pittsburgh, PA.
The new location is in Englewood, OH, less than 3 miles from
the I-70 & SR 48 interchange where we met for so many years
early in the history of our Society. It is also less than 7 miles
from the Dayton International Airport. Motels and restaurants
with well known names dot the landscape around the
interchange. I am sure everyone will be pleased with the new
meeting facility and the general location. Please mark your
calendars now.
IKO Secretary
Secretary Jack Siles has requested we find someone else to
take his office. He has held it for several years and is ready to
retire. The duties of the office are not as complicated as the
title might indicate. They are primarily those of a
“Membership Secretary”. We need some members to step-up
and volunteer so their names can be on a ballot to appear in the
next Bulletin. Please advise me of your interest.
Ohio Book
As a reminder, I am still accumulating new listings for Ohio
Merchant Tokens not appearing in the Lipscomb books. Send
me what you have with attributions. WE STILL NEED
SOMEONE TO COORDINATE THE 3 EDITIONRD
PROJECT.
IKO March Meeting
Present were Dave Gossett, Joe Simons, Pat Cuthbert, Gene
Neuspickle, Jack Siles, Henry Smith, Jerry Schaeper, Tom
Wehner, and Dale Wilges.
Tom Wehner reported on the work to improve the accuracy of
listings for any future edition of the Ohio book.
Jack Siles and Henry Smith are working on an updated
membership roster. Hopefully it will be finished in the next
90 days.
Jerry Schaeper was thanked for his work in promoting IKO to
non-members and getting several new members for our
organization. Without these new members we cannot prosper
as a group. Jerry is to be commended for his work.
Regional and annual meetings were discussed. Progress is
evident.
Send your tokens and medals to Terry today. Make our
October auction better with your prompt response!

Mavericks for this column may be sent to the address of the Maverick Editor given on the 2 page of this newsletter. Please includend
a phone number or email address in case I have any questions about your submission. It is very important to me to get these listings
correct the first time. As a former Maverick Editor once told me, “Once a mistake gets into the published literature, it is almost
impossible to correct”. It is my job to get these done right and I will strive to do so. Thank you.
Please email me if you want an electronic copy of the IKO mavericks in .pdf format. The program that reads this file is free. If you
don’t have it, let me know and I can send instructions to get that, too. The mavericks list is also available on our website, ikotams.org.
The notation ICL refers to the Ingle Customer Ledger. John Byars is working with tokencatalog.com and their researchers to attribute
Ingle tokens. If you haven’t visited tokencatalog.com I would urge you to do so. Many tokens are being attributed on the website.

EDITOR’S NOTES
Warm weather always brings many opportunities to find tokens.
Auctions, flea markets, and garage sales all contribute to the
chance to add to your collection. I hope all of you are able to
add a few new items to what sparks your interest.
If you end up with an interesting story to tell, write it up and
share it with your fellow collectors. I am in need of articles for
the Bulletin and we would like to read about your adventure.
Did you find something unusual? Was it from an odd source?
Whatever the story, we are waiting to hear from you!
In the last Bulletin the article on Indiana Ingles referred to a
merchant from Michigan City named Emil Lepel. His name was
misspelled in the article. Thanks to John Byars for bring this to
my attention.

Ex-IKO Member Killed
For those that have been members of IKO for a while you will
remember Steve Tanenbaum from the October shows. He and
his business partner, Rich Rossa, set up at the show for many
years. While this was before I was a member, I have heard
from others that his offerings were extensive and varied.
Steve was a victim of a hit and run accident on Feb. 11, 2011.
The driver was a murder suspect accused of killing three
people and fleeing from police. Steve was his fourth victim.
He will be remembered for his extensive collections, his
expert knowledge in many areas of exonumia, and for the
books to which he contributed. His many friends miss him
already.
