Gilda LaBruna

    Acupressure Technique

Once you have found the point, place your index finger or thumb on the point and apply steady pressure with a singlestraight finger. Try and imagine a slow and even continuum of energy entering his body at that point. It might sound

hokey, but it will keep you from poking in an awkward or sudden motion that can startle or confuse him. Slowly

increase the pressure and release after 5 to 15 seconds, depending on the body language of your dog. A dog who is

ready to be released from a point might tense his muscles, make a sudden movement, or even yelp. Make sure you use

your own dog's comfort level as a guide, and by no means should a dog acupressure point be held longer than 15

seconds. More is not better in this case. However, do feel free to treat several different points in one sitting, always

repeating each acupressure points on both sides of the body to maintain balance.

If you come across a tender spot on an acupressure point (often marked by a twitch when pressure is applied), simply

use a gentle massaging motion to relax the muscle. Then, use the aforementioned acupressure technique to release the

tender point. Adding a few counter-clockwise rotations to your finger just before releasing may help in these areas as

well. Of course, use extra care and gentleness in these areas on all occasions. Think of long-term health and healing. Asmall massage and gentle release today and tomorrow may be your canine companion's start on his road to recovery.

Keep a record of your work, noting tender areas as well as improvements and you will be amazed at the difference this

    dog therapy can make!

The Importance of Dog NutritionLucky Dog Health is here for the purpose of providing complete, unbiased information about all things related to your

dogs health. Above all else that you learn from your time here, the most important information you can take away

will be the importance of nutrition in maintaining a healthy life and preventing dog disease. Everything from

behavioral problems, to skin diseases, to digestive problems can trace back to elements of nutrition in the diet. Whetheryou are a new dog owner looking to navigate your way through the dog food maze at the local grocery store or a

concerned owner looking to improve your dogs quality of life or even fight disease by changing his nutritional intake

and activity level, our comprehensive nutrition section will provide the answers you are looking for.

A Healthy Dog is a Good DogFirst of all, lets get one thing straight. Other than providing a safe and loving home environment, feeding Fido a

healthy, balanced diet is the most basic and necessary component for his health and well-being. Is your dog

lethargic, stiff, hyper, week, or weepy? Is his skin or hair dry? Is he excessively thirsty or hungry? All of these dog

ailments relate back to the amount and quality of the food he is served. While they can be symptoms of more extreme

conditions, even the most dire of circumstances can be helped by paying special attention to your dogs diet. Our

domestic dogs rely on us to provide them with foods that nourish and strengthen their bodies and minds. Read on to

learn what a balanced canine diet is made up of and how to pick and improve upon commercial pet foods. Fightobesity, malnutrition, and vitamin and mineral deficiency by learning how to incorporate just what your pet needs to

Real World Dog Nutrition SolutionsOkay. Okay. We know that, if you are like most concerned pet owners, you dont have time to cook three square meals

a day for your dog and you refuse to spend more money on his food than you do on your own. We also know, however,

that you are most likely confused and even angry at the duplicitous and often contradictory information you receive

about what exactly you should be feeding him. Head to the nearest pet store and you will be barraged with a plethora of

different brands that boast All Natural, Organic, or even Value. Add to these the number of specialty dog dietssuch as raw foods diets, frozen foods diets, vegetarian diets, and even vegan diets are plentiful. Many of these have

benefits and downfalls, but some are downright dangerous. Lucky Dog Health is here to provide you with applicable

information that will help you make informed decisions about your dogs diet that work with your lifestyle.

Variety: the Spice of a Balanced Dog DietHere is some good basic information that any dog owner should know when embarking on a journey to provide their

dog with an affordable, fast, nutritious, and balanced diet. While the domesticated dogs ancestors subsisted on raw

meat either freshly caught or found, thousands of years of domestication have structured their nutritional needs so that

they benefit from a wide variety of foods. Your dogs nutritional needs are similar but not identical to your own. A

balanced canine diet consists of Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats, Vitamins, and Minerals. The meal plan guide below will

help you to understand the structure of a balanced dog diet.

Dog Meal Plan GuideFood Amount Found Naturally In:

    Proteins30% - 60% ofvolume

meat, beans, eggs, nuts, small amounts incarbohydrates

    Carbohydrates

    30% - 60% ofvolume

rice, corn, potatoes, rolled oats, barley, wholegrain bread

    Fats1 tsp - 1 Tbsp perday

oils (fish, flax, canola, and olive arerecommended)

The vitamins and minerals your dog needs to enjoy optimum health resemble your own, however they are needed indifferent amounts. Also, because of the many variations within the canine species (think of a Chihuahua and a Great

Dane), dosage will vary widely. Because of this fact, the best way to stave off deficiencies in any one area is to feed

your dog a variety of vitamin-packed foods. See the chart below to discover the most important vitamins for your dog

and learn which common foods provide them.

large through the commercial dog food market. Naturally, every pet food manufacturer that you come across will

claim to provide a nutritious diet for your pet. The American Association of Feed Control Officials (the AAFCO)

measures and approves the minimum nutritional adequacy of animal food products. To become AAFCO approved, a

dog food must contain approved percentages of protein and fat. They must also provide a minimum amount of certain

fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins and minerals. Recently, because of the growing instance of obesity in

domesticated dogs, they have added maximum amounts to some of these standards.

What is IN my Dogs Food?Ingredients to Steer Clear Of:

"Chicken, Beef, or Fish Meal" "Meat Meal" "Meat and Bone Meal" "By-Product Meal"

Any commercial dog food that has the American Association of Feed Control Officials stamp of approval will meet

these basic standards. However, many of these approved foods contain such low quality ingredients that much of the

nutrition the label claims to provide is inaccessible to the animal! We will spare you the gruesome details, but the

amount of unregulated use of rendered animal product in many commercial dog foods is common in todays world.

Even within regulated markets, ingredients such as "meat meal' can contain recalled, contaminated meatproducts, euthanized pets, diseased animals, and up to a 2.5% polyethylene from the packaging of outdated

meats. Do you want Fido eating this?

Choosing the Right Dog FoodSome basic rules of thumb:

First of all, don't get just one. Buy three or more brands with differingingredients and rotate every few months, transitioning between brandsby mixing varieties for a couple weeks (for more information, seeTheComplete Holistic Dog Book). This will help keep imbalances at bay.

Use canned "wet" foods. These are more apt to contain whole chunksof meat while at the same time contain less fillers, additives, andunnecessary grains.

Keep food fresh by storing bagged products in the bag, inside of anairtight container. Cover and refrigerate canned food and always disposeof outdated or rancid smelling food immediately.

So how DO you choose a nutritious dog food within your

budget? Look at the shelves. Avoid buying products from stores that leave

products on the shelf for long. Check the expiration dates to helpdetermine this.

Look at the bag. Buy products labeled "Natural". While natural dog foodmean it is a high quality food, it does mean that it wont containchemicals or synthetic preservatives unless it is prominently listed on thecontainer.

    Ingredient Term Meaning

    Chicken, Fish, Lamb, Beef,Venison (Meat)

Meat from muscle, heart, and tongue.

Poultry and Meat By-productsMay include head, feet, intestines, bone,

blood, liver, brain, kidneys, spleen, or lungs.Meat Meal, Meat and Bone Meal,Meat By-product Meal, PoultryBy-product Meal

Includes rendered animal tissues - couldinclude expired meats, diseased animals, euthanized pets, and meat packaging.

Look at the price tag. Generally, the cheaper the product, the cheaperand lower quality the ingredients. With dog food, this is ultimatelyimportant because a single or very small number of varieties are utilizedin a dogs entire lifetime. Low quality food is fine for us to eat on occasiondue to the fact that it is an exception to the rule. Think of all the diseasesprevalent among those humans who eat mostly low quality, highly

processed, high fat foods. This is similar to the effect that low quality dogfood will have on your little canine friend.

Preparing Dog Meals on your Own

Of course, if you have the time and desire, preparing fresh meals for your dog each day is the best option for complete

canine health (see The Complete Holistic Dog Book). A good compromise is to supplement a rotating diet of good

commercial products with fresh foods from your own diet see above for a list of guidelines when choosing dog food

products. Remember, however, that you should always consult a veterinarian, or at least research more detailed

information on specific foods that dogs should never eat (for example, chocolate) before adding foods to your dogs

diet. Look at www.petdiets.com for help. It is also important to cut back the amount of regular dog food you feed when

you begin supplementing with fresh foods to keep your friend from consuming too many calories and gaining weight.

The easiest way to incorporate fresh foods into your dogs diet is to gain a good understanding of which foods are bestincorporated and which ones to stay away from and then adding them to your dogs diet as you make them for yourself.

Following are some general guidelines to think of when building the menu.

How to Supplement a Commercial Dog Food DietMany commercial dog foods are high in carbohydrates even though very little is needed in the domesticated dogs diet.

Add foods like vegetables and fruits, which add a variety of vitamins and antioxidants to their carbohydrate load or give

them a scoop of cooked barley or rice. Also add complex proteins like fish, poultry, and eggs (staying away from pork

fat whenever possible) that already have good natural levels of fat, without any additives, preservatives, or synthetic

materials. To supplement fat intake, simply add a teaspoon or so of fish, flax, or olive oil to his meal.

Today flower essences are well known all over the world. More than 20different flower essence systems with more than 1.000 different essences areexisting. The founder of the modern flower essence therapy was the Englishhuman doctor Edward Bach in 1930-36.

Flower essences are watery dilutions of plants or flowers. They were producedwith water, crystal glass and energy and were conserved with alcohol. They arenot homoeopathic, not herbal and not aromatic in their preparation.

Flower essences contain no pharmacologic means, have no scientific support atthis time and no scientific studies in man or pets. The mechanism of action isreally unknown today. They influence the mental, emotional and physicalbalance of the individuum.

Flower essences are composed of water as a carrier of information an alcoholfor conservation. The identification of essences is possible by spectroscopy.

There is no defined dose-effect relation; the effects are based on resonancephenomenon.

To understand how flower essences can work, it is necessary to look at thestructure and properties of water: It has a dipole structure and forms stableand instable clusters. A rapid information transfer is possible between differentclusters for example by shaking a watery solution.

In a living system frequencies of flower essences interact with frequencies ofthe system. In human beings you find frequencies from < 1 Hz to over 1018 Hz,so you can have an endless number of interactions.

The founder of the modern flower essences, Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936)established the Bach Flower System: He found 37 individual plants, spring

water and one combination of 5 plants (Rescue Remedy). The essences of theBach Flower System are numbered from 1-39 and listened alphabetically fromNr. 1-Agrimony to Nr. 38-Willow. Bach prepared his remedies of flowers of nontoxic wild plants, bushes and trees and spring water he found in the Englishcountryside. He developed special methods of preparation using spring water, sun and decoction.

English Flower Essences are concentrated (stock bottles) and have to beprepared before use. They were diluted in a solution containing 3 parts ofspring water and 1 part of alcohol (vodka, brandy). To make a mixture for usein animals (and man) you add 2 drops of each essence per 10 ml solution. Only

the famous Nr. 39 Rescue Remedy makes an exception: you add 4 drops of Nr.39 per 10 ml water. A mixture can contain several essences.

The dosage in small animals is about 1-5 drops 1-4 times a day--dependant onthe species and the reaction of the animal. You can give the mixture into themouth, add it to food or water or drop it on the head of the animal.

Originally the Bach Flower System was found for treatment of man. Since about25 years we can see an increasing use in treatment of animals. It is based onthe concept that correction of emotional dysfunction can help heal physicaldysfunction and can complement other forms of therapy-either conventional oralternative medicine. This form of therapy is demanded more and more by petowners.

    15/26

According to Edward Bach's philosophy you can treat all diseases in man (andanimals) with his flower therapy. But Bach Flower Therapy is only one of manyinstruments we use in curing animals. It also has its possibilities and its limits!

Bach Flower Therapy is indicated for all psychosomatic problems, for

behavioural problems, for diseases resistant to all used therapies-for examplefearful and timid animals, mourning animals, hyperactive animals, barkingdogs, spraying cats or animals refusing medicaments.

Before using Bach Flower Therapy in animals, look whether they aren'tundercooled, starved or totally exhausted. Contraindicated is flower therapy indeficiencies in food or environment, lack of vitamins or minerals, orthopedicproblems which need surgical care, dangerous diseases like failure of organs(liver, kidney, heart) or non-acceptance of the therapy by the owner.

But don't give up good therapies to use Bach Flower Remedies as onlytreatment in diseases without any psychic disorder, for example accidents, wounds, fractures.

The most famous remedy of the Bach Flower System is Nr. 39-Rescue Remedy, the only combination in the system. It is composed of 5 flowers: Nr. 6 CherryPlum, Nr. 9 Clematis, Nr. 18 Impatiens, Nr. 26 Rock Rose, Nr. 29 Star ofBethlehem. It can be used in every case of emergency as a first aidmedicament--in practice by the vets assistant, at home by the owner. You candrop a few drops on the head between the ears and repeat every 15-20minutes until the animal gets quiet.

You can use Rescue Remedy in terror, panic phobias, extreme fear for exampleduring driving in a car, during examination in practice, during thunder, lightning and storms, when animals are afraid of firecrackers, after accidents orfights.

Summary: Bach Flower Therapy is easy to learn, easy to incorporate inveterinary practice and easily accepted by pet owners. Bach Flower Therapy isa good working, non invasive therapy to treat psychosomatic problems in smallanimals. I'll invite you to test it in your practice!

Every home with dogs should have apple cider vinegar. It's a remedy withmultiple uses for dogs: alleviating allergies, arthritis, establishing correct pHbalance. You can also give apple cider vinegar to cats and horses. As written in an excellent, 1997 article by Wendy Volhard:"...If your dog has itchy skin, the beginnings of a hot spot, incessantly washes its feet, has smelly ears, or is picky about his food, theapplication of ACV may change things around. For poor appetite, use it in the

food - 1 tablespoon, two times a day for a 50 lb. dog. For itchy skin orbeginning hot spots, put ACV into a spray bottle, part the hair and spray on.Any skin eruption will dry up in 24 hours and will save you having to shave thedog. If the skin is already broken, dilute ACV with an equal amount of waterand spray on. Taken internally, ACV is credited with maintaining the acid/alkalinebalance of the digestive tract. To check your dog's pH balance, pick up somepH strips at the drug store, and first thing in the morning test the dog's urine. If it reads anywhere from 6.2 - 6.5, your dog's system is exactly where itshould be. If it is 7.5 or higher, the diet you are feeding is too alkaline, andACV will re-establish the correct balance. If you have a dog that has clear, watery discharge from the eyes, arunny nose, or coughs with a liquid sound, use ACV in his or her food. Oneteaspoon twice a day for a 50 lb. dog will do the job. After your weekly grooming sessions, use a few drops in his or herears after cleaning them to avoid ear infections. Other uses for ACV are theprevention of muscle weakness, cramps, feeling the cold, calluses on elbowsand hock joints, constipation, bruising too easily, pimples on skin surfaces, twitching of facial muscles, sore joints, arthritis and pus in the urine. There arealso reports that it is useful in the prevention of bladder and kidney stones.Fleas, flies, ticks and bacteria, external parasites, ring worm, fungus, staphylococcus, streptococcus, pneumococcus, mange, etc., areunlikely to inhabit a dog whose system is acidic inside and out. Should youever experience any of these with your dog, bathe with a nice gentle herbalshampoo -- one that you would use on your own hair -- rinse thoroughly, andthen sponge on ACV diluted with equal amounts of warm water. Allow your dogto drip dry. It is not necessary to use harsh chemicals for minor fleainfestations. All fleas drown in soapy water and the ACV rinse makes the skintoo acidic for a re-infestation. If you are worried about picking up fleas whenyou take your dog away from home, keep some ACV in a spray bottle, and

    I. Digestive Enzymes And Beneficial BacteriaWith any cooked or commercial food, it is essential to add digestive enzymes.Plant-based enzymes work in the widest range of pH and temperature, and arebetter for the majority of animals than pancreatic enzymes or pancreasextracts. There may be a few instances where pancreas products work better, but these should be prescribed by your veterinarian. It does not take much,

just a little bit with each meal. Some sources suggest using brewer's yeast ornutritional yeast, because they contain enzymes as well as B-vitamins andother nutrients. If your animal likes and tolerates yeast, it is a fine addition tothe food. However, some animals will develop an allergy to yeast, and not all ofthem like it. I would still recommend adding a specific enzyme combinationeven if you are also using yeast. Make sure that the product you selectcontains at least protease, amylase, and lipase (some also contain cellulase, which helps digest plant materials containing cellulose). Many products combine enzymes with probiotics, and these are also anexcellent choice. There are many products made specifically for animals, available in health food stores, specialty pet stores, or over the internet.Probiotics, which include L. acidophilus as well as a number of other beneficialbacteria, are of special importance in animals with any type of digestiveproblem as well as animals who are, or have been, taking antibiotics. They help

keep the bacteria population in the gut balanced and healthy, and prevent"bad" bacteria from gaining a foothold. Live-culture yogurt, which contains asmall amount of acidophilus, while not harmful, is not an adequate source ofprobiotics for the average animal.

II. Omega-3 Fatty AcidsYou've probably heard a lot about essential fatty acids, especially Omega-3 andOmega-6 fatty acids, in the media lately. There are many kinds of fatty acids,of which Omega-3 and Omega-6 are two types. "Essential" means that ourbodies cannot synthesize them, and they must be obtained in the diet. Themodern American diet contains far more Omega-6 than Omega-3 fatty acids,

and many studies are showing that this imbalance is potentially harmful. Noone knows the "ideal" ratio but something like 5:1 is probably adequate. Theaverage person's diet contains more like 10:1 or 20:1. This is also true ofcommercial pet foods, because Omega-6 oils are less expensive and morestable than Omega-3's. The Omega-3's have a number of important effects onimmune system function, nervous system development and function, and onthe skin. They also have anti-arthritic, antioxidant, and anti-ulcer properties.

They are precursors of endogenous steroids and other hormones, help regulateblood circulation and blood pressure, maintain kidney function and fluidbalance, prevent blood clots, and have dozens of other vital functions. The first

sign of an imbalance or deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids is most likely to showup in dogs and cats as dry, dull fur or itchy, irritated, or flaky skin.Probably the best source of Omega-3 fatty acids for animals is fish oil. This is

not the same as cod liver oil, which contains too much Vitamin A and D to beused in large amounts. You can get fish oil capsules at the health food store, variously labeled "Salmon Oil," "Marine Fish Oil," "Deep Sea Fish Oil," or "ColdWater Fish Oil." These contain the specific Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA,which can be used directly by the body. However, the capsules are large, and

the oil not very palatable, especially to cats. Farm-raised salmon (usually calledAtlantic or Norwegian salmon) are fed dyes, antifungal drugs, and other substances that may accumulate in body fat;therefore avoid fish oil from these sources.A better choice might be a product made specifically for animals that contain amixture of fatty acids with an emphasis on Omega 3s. There are alsoproducts that contain fatty acids as well as enzymes and probiotics that wouldbe a good choice for animals who do not tolerate multiple supplements.Another major source of Omega-3 fatty acids is flax seed oil. Flax seed oil hassome important points in its favor, including its lower cost, availability inbottles (rather than only in capsules), and the fact that flax is a plant productand therefore a humane, renewable resource. Lignans, a component of flaxseed, have anti-cancer effects (select a high-lignan flax seed oil for thisbenefit). However, studies that have been conducted on the benefits ofOmega-3 fatty acids have mostly used fish oils, so its benefits are somewhatunproven. Its predominant fatty acid, ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), must beconverted in the body to EPA and DHA, which are already present in that formin fish oils. There is some controversy on the ability of animals to make thisconversion. However, in practice, I have seen great benefits in my patients, both from ground flax seed and flax seed oil, such as improved skin and coatand obviously better energy and well-being.

BioSuperfood, a combination of four specific blue-green algae species, alsocontains Omega-3 fatty acids. Please see the entry under Antioxidants for thissupplement.High doses of fish oils deserve a special mention in their ability to fight cancer.Dr. Susan Wynn's protocol for cancer patients includes a natural diet, antioxidants, and fish oil (salmon or menhaden oil) at 50-100 mg/kg (milligramsper kilogram) per day. At the high end, that is about 45 mg of oil per pound ofdog (or cat) every day, which is a lot of fish-oil capsules if you have a big dog. However, the benefits may be well worth the effort.IMPORTANT: When supplementing with any oils, it is vital to also give extraVitamin E, approximately 100-800 mg per day depending on the size of the

animal (see Antioxidants below for dosage suggestions).

III. AntioxidantsThere are many kinds of antioxidants. They are important in the neutralizationor scavenging of "oxygen free radicals" which are normal by-products of bodymetabolism. Controlled amounts of free radicals are necessary as weaponsagainst viruses and bacteria, as well as for their role in hormone productionand numerous enzyme-catalyzed reactions. However, excess free radicals candamage cellular DNA, destroy cell membranes, and lead to long-term immunesystem damage and cancer. Excessive amounts of free radicals are formedfrom exposure to radiation, including sunlight, environmental pollution, andhigh-fat diets. In people, a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables may containadequate natural antioxidants. Dogs and cats eating commercial pet food, however, may not get enough appropriate antioxidants in the diet.

Common antioxidants include Vitamins C and E, which do indeed havesignificant antioxidant activity as well as many other important metabolicfunctions. These vitamins are excellent supplements to the diet in any case.

The Ester C form of Vitamin C is buffered, and is the best choice for animals.Vitamin C may be dosed to "bowel tolerance." That is, you start off adding just

a little Vitamin C (50-100 mg) to the food, and increase the dose very graduallyuntil the animal develops diarrhea. At that point, you back off to the previousdosage amount that did not cause diarrhea, and stay with that dose. Theanimal's tolerance may vary depending on diet, time of year, and stresses suchas changes in the home, pollution, and exposure to radiation (UV light, x-rays,power lines, etc.). Natural Vitamin E comes in the form of d-alpha tocopherol, but a supplement containing mixed tocopherols (alpha and gamma) may havemore benefits. (Avoid dl-alpha tocopherol, which is a synthetic form of VitaminE.) It is very safe to give. Give 100-200 IU per day for a cat or small dog (lessthan 20 pounds), up to 800 IU for giant breed dogs. Vitamin E is very safe andmost cats love the taste of the oil; just prick the capsule with a pin, squeezeout a few drops on your finger, and let the cat lick it off.

There are many other good antioxidant supplements. Where dosageinformation is not specified, give a cat or small dog about 1/10 to 1/6 thehuman dosage, as specified on the label, per day. (Human doses are based ona 150 lb. person)BioSuperfood. This is an algae combination similar to spirulina and chlorella, but easier to digest and higher in antioxidants. It contains vitamins, minerals(including trace minerals), enzymes, antioxidants all 22 amino acids, andOmega-3 fatty acids. There are 2 formulas available that are appropriate forpets. This is such a powerful supplement that we are asking that it be used

under supervision. Please see this library article for more information.VitaminA/beta-carotene. Dogs can use beta-carotene, but cats cannot convert it toVitamin A and must receive Vitamin A itself in the diet. Cod liver oil is a goodsource of Vitamin A as well as Vitamin D. CAUTION: Vitamin A (though not beta-carotene) can be toxic in overdose. Signs of toxicity include anorexia, weightloss, sensitivity to touch, and loss of bone density which may cause fractures.Kittens and puppies require about 200 IU of Vitamin A per kilogram of bodyweight per day, adult cats and dogs about 75 IU per kilogram per day.Commercial pet foods probably contain adequate amounts of Vitamin A. Greentea, which can be found as an extract in some antioxidant combinationsSelenium, which is synergistic with Vitamin E and a component of the

antioxidant glutathione peroxidase, which is produced by the body. Puppiesand kittens need about 5 mg of selenium per kilogram of body weight per day, adult cats 1.6 g, and adult dogs 2.2 g per kilogram per day. CAUTION: Seleniumcan be toxic in overdose. Signs of toxicity including vomiting, anorexia, nervousness, staggering gait, weakness and difficulty breathing. SOD (super-oxide dismutase), an antioxidant normally produced by the body. There issome controversy as to whether SOD taken orally is actually absorbed from thegut into the bloodstream.Zinc, which is also important to skin health, immunesystem function, and is important in regulating Vitamins E and A. CAUTION:Zinc can be toxic in overdose. Too much zinc will cause imbalances in calciumand copper. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, loss of haircolor, constipation, tetany, lameness, stiffness, or reluctance to move. Give amaximum of 5 mg per day for a cat or small dog for up to 2 weeks; for long-term supplementation, give a maximum of 5 mg every other day. Some

Siberian Huskies may be able tolerate higher dosages.L-Cysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid. It can be taken as a separate supplementMSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane), a derivative of DMSO, may help the body maintainadequate levels of cysteine in the body. MSM can be started at about 200 mgper 10 pounds body weight per day, and increased as needed. It may take days

to weeks to see an effect. MSM is especially helpful in arthritis and other formsof chronic inflammation.Glutathione peroxidase is an antioxidant formed by thebody with selenium. It can be found as an oral supplement, but the body'sproduction of the peroxidase form may be better enhanced by taking N-acetylcysteine, L-cysteine, and L-methionine. MSM may also be a goodsupplement to promote the production of these sulfur amino acids.Alpha-lipoicacid, which aids in the functions of Vitamins C and E as well as glutathioneperoxidase.Proanthocyanadins (pycnogenol/pine bark extract and grape seedextract). These highly concentrated antioxidants are easy and fairlyinexpensive to use.Chlorophyll, the plant version of hemoglobin, contains fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other valuable nutrients, andappears to have antioxidant activity. Available as a liquid extract, wheat grassextract, and present in products like spirulina and blue-green algae. Barley Catis a good source of chlorophyll as well as enzymes.Milk thistle (Silymarin), aflavinoid antioxidant with particular healing power for the liver.Co-enzyme Q-10(Ubiquinone). While not a free radical scavenger, Co-enyzme Q-10 helpsprevent the formation of oxygen free radicals during cellular metabolism. Thisenzyme is present in every cell in the body, but its levels decrease as we age.It has been shown to improve oxygenation to the heart, and may be beneficialin chronic inflammatory conditions such as cystitis and arthritis. A cat or smalldog should get 5-10 mg per day, and large dogs may take 30-60 mg per day.

pple Cider Vinegar for Dogs Every home with dogs should haveapple cider vinegar. It's a remedy with multiple uses for dogs: alleviatingallergies, arthritis, establishing correct pH balance. You can also give applecider vinegar to cats and horses. As written in an excellent, 1997 article by Wendy Volhard:"...If your dog has itchy skin, the beginnings of a hot spot, incessantly washes its feet, has smelly ears, or is picky about his food, theapplication of ACV may change things around. For poor appetite, use it in thefood - 1 tablespoon, two times a day for a 50 lb. dog. For itchy skin orbeginning hot spots, put ACV into a spray bottle, part the hair and spray on.

Any skin eruption will dry up in 24 hours and will save you having to shave thedog. Ifit reads anywhere from 6.2 - 6.5, your dog's system is exactly where it shouldbe. If it is 7.5 or higher, the diet you are feeding is too alkaline, and ACV will re-establish the correct balance. Other uses for ACV are the

prevention of muscle weakness, cramps, feeling the cold, calluses on elbowsand hock joints, constipation, bruising too easily, pimples on skin surfaces, twitching of facial muscles, sore joints, arthritis and pus in the urine. There arealso reports that it is useful in the prevention of bladder and kidney stones.

Fleas, flies, ticks and bacteria, external parasites, ring worm, fungus, staphylococcus, streptococcus, pneumococcus, mange, etc., are unlikely toinhabit a dog whose system is acidic inside and out. Should you everexperience any of these with your dog, bathe with a nice gentle herbalshampoo -- one that you would use on your own hair -- rinse thoroughly, andthen sponge on ACV diluted with equal amounts of warm water. Allow your dogto drip dry. It is not necessary to use harsh chemicals for minor fleainfestations. All fleas drown in soapy water and the ACV rinse makes the skintoo acidic for a re-infestation. If you are worried about picking up fleas whenyou take your dog away from home, keep some ACV in a spray bottle, andspray your dog before you leave home, and when you get back. Take somewith you and keep it in the car, just in case you need it any time. Obviously formajor infestations, more drastic measures are necessary. ACV normalizes thepH levels of the skin, makes your dog unpalatable to even the nastiest ofbacteria and you have a dog that smells like a salad, a small price to pay!"

NATURAL ANTIBIOTICSWhile antibiotics are appropriate and effective cures they are outrageouslyoverprescribed. This is unnecessary since there are natural alternatives to treatmost conditions. Many types of bacteria have become antibiotic-resistant due

to the overprescription.Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria. They are completely uselessagainst viruses, fungi, worms and parasites. Using these drugs can also causean overgrowth of candida, yeast, and fungi. Frequent use can even depressyour immune system, stimulate allergies, and damage organs such as the liverand kidneys.Remember that if you are nursing or pregnant to always check with thepractitioner of your choice first, since some herbs and supplements, althoughnatural, can have harmful effects on the baby.

Yes, you can have allergic reactions to natural and herbal supplements!!! If younotice any pain or swelling of the throat, hives on the body, nausea, increase in

body temperature after taking a supplement, seek medical attention.[line]HerbsAlcohol extracted tinctures of herbs are the most potent medicinal form, theymay have a sour or bitter taste that may make you opt for capsule form.Separate preparations of herbal supplements are preferred to the "combo"ones, so you can optimize the dose and frequency of each.Sage, Thyme, Oregano, and Parsley are herbs you can add to your food thatare considered antimicrobial. Oregano is good for chest, lung, and yeastinfections. For throat infections, steep one tablespoon of fresh sage in hotwater for half an hour. Strain the mixture, gargle and swallow. Here is an excellent resource page I found about Medicinal Herb Preparation

Raw GarlicFamily: Amaryllidacae, Genus and Species : Allium sativumGarlic has a long proven history as an effective antibiotic, antiviral, antiparasitic, and antifungal. It was used in WWI to prevent wound infectionsand by Albert Schweitzer to treat dysentery in Africa. The Russians used it in

WWII when their supply of penicillin was scarce. It's active compound allicin, isas useful an agent against staph and strep as some of the heaviest hittingmeds, and has even been shown to kill antibiotic-resistant strains of thesebacteria. It is a broad-spectrum anibiotic and has often been called a "wonderdrug". Herbalists recommend eating one clove of chopped raw garlic two tothree times per day (added to food). Garlic Oil can also be taken internally.Place 20-30 drops in your ear for ear infections, three times a day. Ideally a rawclove is chewed or crushed. It can also be applied directly to the skin. Trytaking deodorized garlic capsules three times per day if you are worried aboutgarlic breath.[line]EchinaceaFamily : Compositae, Genus and Species : Echinacea angustifolia, E. purpurea

This is an increasingly poplular supplement that fights bacteria, viruses, andmicroorganisms. It was one of the Native Americans most used healing herbs. It stimulates production of immune-modulating T cells and B cells. Also, it doeskill a braod range of disease causing viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa. Likegarlic, it is comparible to penicillin. Take one teaspoon of echinacea tincture atthe onset of symptoms, and one teaspoon every two hours for the first twodays, then drop to one teaspoon three times per day. You can also add twoteaspoons of the dried root in one cup of water and boil, then simmer for 15

minutes. Drink up to three cups per day. Do not give to children under the ageof 2, and start with lower doses for those over age 65. Do not take echinaceafor more than ten consecutive days or you may develop a resistance![line]GoldensealFamily : Ranunculaceae, Genus and Species : Hydrastis canadensis

This antibiotic and potential immune stimulant was once collected to the pointof near extinction. Studies show that berberine, the alkaliod extracted fromgoldenseal, blocks streptococci from colonizing in the body. It may aid in thetreatment of bacterial, fungal, and protozoal infections. It has been used fordysentery and cholera. Indian researchers have found berberine to be more

effective against cholera than the powerful antibiotic, Chloromycetin. Take 20-30 drops or three capsules three times per day for a maximum of ten days. Also, you can boil one half to one teaspoon in one cup of water and steep tenminutes. Drink up to two cups per day. Do not take goldenseal if you arepregnant as berberine is a potential uterine stimulant!![line]Oregon Grape RootFamily : Berberidaceae, Genus and Species : B. aquifolium or MahoniaaquifoliumAnother berberine containing herb, like goldenseal. It is very closely related toBarberry Root Bark (see below). Do not take Oregon Grape Root if you arepregnant as berberine is a potential uterine stimulant!![line]Barberry Root Bark

Family : Berberidaceae, Genus and Species : Berberis vulgarisContains berberine like goldenseal, which explains it's similar antibiotic effect. It was used by ancient Egyptians, American Indians, and India's Ayurvedichealers. It was also an ingredient in the anti-cancer Hoxsey Formula marketedin the 1950's in the U.S. It is an immune stimulant and may shrink tumors. A

compress can treat pinkeye - soak a clean cloth in a barbery infusion. Theherb's edible berries also make jams and jellies. Studies how it is effectiveagainst staph- and streptococci, salmonella, shigella, E. coli and Candida. It isalso used to treat dysentary and cholera. Use half a teaspoon boiled in one cupof water for 20-30 minutes. Drink cool and up to one cup per day. Do not giveto children under the age of 2, and start with lower doses for those over age65. This herb is not as well known, however, it is an extremely powerful antibioticand anti-inflammatory. Its active ingredient, baptitoxine, detoxifies the liverand blood. Herbalists recommend its use for swollen glands, strep or sorethroat, mouth sores, tonsilitis, pneumonia, meningitis, and food or bloodpoisoning. Take five to ten drops of the tincture every three or four hours.Diminish the dose if you feel nauseaus (probably due to detoxification/releaseof stored toxins into the bloodstream ready for excretion from the body)[line]EucalyptusFamily : Myrtaceae, Genus and Species: Eucalyptus globulus

This is the sole food source for the cute marsupial, the koala. You've probably

used it before in Listerine, Vick's VapoRub, or Dristan. It is a powerfuldecongestant with a very sharp and distinctly recognizable odor. This is anatural antiseptic that kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Russian studies showthat it kills the influenza virus. It's used internally to treat tuberculosis andchronic coughs. Externally, it can be rubbed on the chest or back forrespiratory infections. It can be used as an inhalant (boil a handful of the driedleaves) or an herbal bath. Use one to two teaspoons of the dried crushedleaves per cup of boiling water. Steep ten minutes. Drink up to two cups a day.

You can also substitute one or two drops of the essential oil for the leaves.[line]Bee Products

Raw Unfiltered Honey has been used since ancient Egypian times as aneffective topical antibiotic to treat cuts, burns, and scrapes, just slap it on!Rarely, raw honey can become infected with botulism, a dangerous bacteria.Never give honey to children under one year of age![line]
