IN MEMORIAM. REV. HENRY J. WALKER.

One year ago there sat with us, through our Conference session, one whose robust faith and restless zeal seemed so fitly joined with a vigorous body that we could but think that in him was the promise of many years of effectual service in the Master's work. With a faith undaunted by discouragements, with a zeal unfagging, with plans for Christian enterprise far reaching, he returned to his home. Within one week from the time the Conference farewells were said, he, who seemed the strongest of us all, was followed by weeping friends and heartstrickened loved ones, to his final resting place. Henceforth the name of Henry J. Walker will not appear on the roll of the toilers on earth; but it belongs now to the great company of them who have passed on to their reward.

The suddenness of his departure was peculiarly afflicting, not only to his family, but also to the cause wl:.ich he served. So sudden, so unexpected, his taking off had the effect of a stunning blow.

He had reached his home on Tuesday evening after Conference, so happy and glad to be with his loved ones again. He spent the evening with his family in pleasant conversation and in singing some new songs which greatly affected him. One of these favorite songs was entitled, "The Haven of Rest." He seemed never to tire of it. The next two days he spent in attending to his correspondence and making plans for his work. To his family those were very pleasant, happy days. His manner so tender, his conversation so deeply spiritual, he seemed as one who walked with God

One Friday morning at the breakfast table he laid his hands upon Willie's head and expressed the wish that his little boys were all converted and in the church. In his last prayer with his family he prayed very earnestly for them all, mentioning each by name. After prayer he sat still a few moments, then calling his wife to his side, he showed her a little motto which he had printed on the cover of his diary and' which he said he had adopted as his motto for the new year. The motto read, "What Would Jesus Do?" He then went out, intending to plow some ground for a garden. He desired his wife to accompany him, but on account of household duties she could not go then, but promised to go soon and help him do the planting. Some time after this when Sister Waiker drew near the field where her husband was supposed to be working she saw the horse and plow standing in the furrow, and upon coming nearer

Page 20: Ill iT. dDHNS RIVER ENBE. - FLUMChistory/journals_1892-1900/189… · iT. dDHNS RIVER ~O ENBE. OJ' TBB METHODI&T EPJIROP RHURRH. BLD .AT JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, JANUARY 13-18, 18~2

20

she found the lifeless body oi her husband lying upon the ground; the immortal Spirit had found the "Haven of Rest."

Brother Walker was born in Preston , Eng., May 24, 1835; with his parents he came to Wisconsin in 1846, was married to his now bereaved wife in Mazo Manie, Dane County, Wis. , October 18, 1854. He was converted March 14, 1855. Commenced to preach the next year. His full consecration to God took place March 25, 1861, at which time he received the witness of the Spirit that he was wholly the Lord's. He enlisted in the 12th Wisconsin Infantry in the fall of 1861, and gave nearly four years to the service of his country-first in the ranks and afterwards as Chaplain in his regiment

He joined the West Wisconsin Conference in 1865, working within lts bounds until 1873, when he was transferred to the South Kansas Conference, where he spent ten years; he was transfered to the Florida Conference in March, 1884. His name first appt>ars in Connection with Kissimmee mission in 1885. The next year St. Johns River Conference was formed and Brother Walker was appointed Presiding Elder of Eustis District, with seven charges, but with the whole Southwest Florida open to him. In this difficult and discouraging field he labored with an earnest persistency that was truly wonderful. He had entered upon his sixth year' s appointment to the District when

"God took him." It has been truly said of Brother Walker that he was a man of deep convictions, and usually quite positive in expressing them. He was a hearty hater of what he thought to be wrong, and a zealous defender of what he thought to be right; this positiveness, which had its place in an honest and loving heart, d0ubtless sometimes carried him beyond the limits conservative

propriety and moderation. We, whose lot it was to labor under the leadership of Brother

Walker, feel that we have lost a true and warm-hearted friend, and that a courageous soul has been called from the ranks of our

rriinistry. Servant of God , w ell do ne ;

Thy glorious w a rfare' s past ; T b y battle ' s fought, thy victo ry won ,

A.nd th ou art crowned at last. G. w. B UTLER.

BIBLE CAUSE.

Your Committee on Bible Cause beg leave to report: Believing that the vital interests of the church depend largely upon the i..niversal spread of the Holy Bible; that we hail with gladness the heroic efforts of the American Bible Society to place in the hands o f each child in our Sunday School a copy of the Holy Scriptures; therefore,

RESOLVED, That we deem it the bounden duty of each pastor to aid the Arneri<:an Bible Society; not only by taking collections for the same, but by a personal canvass, visiting each family as far as practicable within the bounds of his charge or circuit, and arrange for the supply of those whom they find destitute of the same.

Respectfully submitted, E. v. BLACKMAN, J. SCHOFIELD,

Committee.

FREEDMAN'S AID AND SOUTHERN EDUCATION SOCIETY.

Your Committee on the Freedman's Aid and Southern Edqcation Society of our church would report as follows :

\Ve are more and more convinced of the importance of the work of the Freedman's Aid and Southern Education Society. We would recommend the efforts of the Secretaries of said Society, during the year past, to acquaint our people with the results already attained, and also to bring to their minds, and so to lay on their hearts the present great needs and opportunities of the work in this Southern field.

This Society should receive the support, not only of our own ~hurch people, but of every well wisher of our country; for it is doing not a little to solve a difficult social and political problem in our progress.

Respectfully submitted, E. I. GETMAN, G. w. BUTLER,

Your committee, to whom was referred the matter of Missionary Publications, beg leave to submit the following report :

1. We hail with acclamations of joy and profound thanksgiving to God, the intelligence that through the energetic labors of our missionary secretary our parent Missionary Society is now

out of debt. :z. The committee on subscriptions to "The Gospel In All Lands" report that they secured but ten names, due largely, as they believe, to the want of financial ability among the mem-

bers. The "World-Wide Missions" has been largely taken in our several charges. Your committee would strongly recommend Bishop Taylor's publication, "The African News," to every lover

of missions. F. McCLUNEY, A. A. PRESBREY.

all ranks and races, Methodism proposes by the Epworth League ~g with her other agencies) to incorporate the young people Of her families and Sunday-schools into her conquering armies.

We suggest the following recommendations for endorsement by the Conference :

1. We hope to see the time when there will be an Epworth League Chapter in every church in Methodism, and we urge

e formation of the same wherever and as soon as practicable. ~. To all other organizations of young people already in oper. n in our churches, we would commend the desirability of

urollment as Chapters of the Epworth League. This much we tlrink loyalty to our Methodism demands. The Epworth Herald, ably edited by the Rev. Dr. J. F. Berry, is the organ of the Ep

orth League, a splendid coadjutor in all its work, and merits t1ae patronage of the young people.

3. That the Presiding Elders be requested to report the numof Epworth Leagues and other young people's associations,

ether with the total membership, to each annual Conference, connection with their reports of other work.
