Village to display patrioticcolors through summer

Family Fest thank-yous all around!

Earlier this year residents were greeted by some additional colors around the Village, in addition to those associated with springtime in the Midwest.

These proud colors — red, white and blue — can be seen in the 71 American flags that hang from light poles in parts of the Village.

Trustee Jim Peck was instrumen-tal in getting the American flags in place in time for Memorial Day. A motorcycle enthusiast, Peck always liked the look of Old Glory on dis-play in communities as he traveled around.

American flags will fly through Labor Day

“Riding through about any small town in Illinois you see flags every-where,” Peck said. “I thought Forsyth is as patriotic a town as anywhere.”

In April, trustees approved an agreement with Ameren Illinois to allow the Village to hang American flags from the company’s light poles. The flags are mounted on poles on U.S. Route 51, Weaver Road, El-wood Street, and Ruehl Street.

Peck is pretty happy with how things turned out.

“I am so grateful for the men and women who have served or are serv-ing,” he said. “I just thought we need to do this to show our thanks.”

The American flags will stay in place through Labor Day.

Family Fest happens every year because of the generosity of oth-ers. Here’s a modest, but heartfelt, thanks for the generosity of our sponsors and for bingo donations:

David Inman is the 2018 Forsyth Decatur Disc Open champion.

Competitors line up behind the starting line to take on the 5K run/walk during this year’s Family Fest.

Professional disc golfer David Inman was the winner of the 2018 Forsyth Decatur Open Disc golf tournament held June 9-10 at Forsyth Park Disc Golf Course, located at Forsyth Park.

Inman of Milan, near the Quad Cities, won the event with a score of -24, which was three better than his nearest competitor, second-place fin-isher Danny Beauchamp who finished at -21.

Inman began the fourth and final round with a lead of three, and at the end of the round, he had maintained that margin for the victory. According to the Professional Disc Golf As-sociation, it was the 19th career win for Inman, which moves his career earnings up over $5,435.

More than 70 disc golfers came to town to compete traveling from Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and around the state of Illinois.

Daniels is the second new business owner to convert an older home to office space in the Village in recent years.

Community and Economic Development Coordinator Andrew Zupkoff’s report to trustees dated July 2 made note of a “residential office conversion inquiry.”

Zupkoff wrote that he had spoken with the principal of a small office firm, who was impressed that State Farm agent Ali Doolin-Hupp and Edward Jones advisor Angela E Dan-iels both converted older houses into office space in the Village. Zupkoff said the interested party has a spe-cific house in mind to possibly seek similar rezoning to business for the purpose of an office conversion.

Doolin-Hupp opened her office on Clement Avenue in 2014, while Daniels had her grand opening for her new office on Lucile Avenue just last month.

House-to-office conversions a growing trend?

The Village is seeking a com-munity member to volunteer as one of five members of the Tree Board. The group regulates numbers and types of trees planted, in addition to maintenance and/or removal of trees and shrubs in parks and on Village property and rights-of-way. Tree Board members are appointed by the mayor to a three-year term and must be approved by Village trustees. Meetings are the fourth Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. in Village Hall. Call Village Hall at 877-9445 if you have an interest in the position. In the law enforcement report on June 4, Macon County Sheriff’s Deputy Byron Ebbert told trustees that the reports of drug activity at 130 E. Cox St. have been addressed by law enforcement. Ebbert also

reported that there had been recent criminal property damage to vehicle windows at the Hickory Point movie theater, Gailey Eye Clinic and Horve Builders. Ebbert said it might be kids with a pellet gun doing the damage. Don’t forget that the next movie night in Forsyth Park is Saturday, July 14 in the bowl behind the pavil-ion. Paddington 2 will start at 7:30 p.m. Farmers Market will offer a va-riety of food options for sale before the show from 4:30–7:30 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Forsyth Board of Trustees is sched-uled for Monday, July 16, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in Village Hall at 301 S. Route 51 in Forsyth. Board meet-ings are held the first and third Mondays of the month and are open to the public.
