Farewell to the Graduating Class of 2019

Week 6 of Term 4 2019 saw our Year 12 cohort experience their final days of schooling sharing memories and feelings of excitement anticipation and sadness Now that all assessment was complete the students could relax celebrate their achievements and look to the new and exciting experiences that await them

The Year 12 cohort spent their final days at the College spending time with their peers thanking their teachers for the support they have provided over the years and farewelling younger students who will soon be in their shoes The achievements of all students were celebrated at Speech Night and as the week progressed more and more tears flowed as the students said goodbye to their home rooms and Houses in the final assemblies The Year 12 pool party is always a highlight and students enjoyed coming together for one last time to socialize relax and enjoy each otherrsquos company over a pizza lunch The ice-cream van was very well-received and thanks must be given to the Friends of AB Paterson College for providing this delicious treat

On the morning of Valedictory the Year 12 cohort shared a breakfast of coffee and cronuts together in the Rickard Courtyard The atmosphere was thick with emotion excitement for what lay ahead and sadness for departing what would have been a second home for many students for almost 13 years It was a whole day celebration where staff families and students mixed in a wonderful social atmosphere reminiscing about memorable classroom lessons and co-curricular activities embellishing camp stories and taking pictures capturing this special day

World Scholarrsquos Cup Tournament of Champions

Congratulations to our Junior and Senior teams on their extraordinary results - a haul of 76 Gold and Silver medals We are so excited to share wonderful news and astounding results from our World Scholarrsquos Cup Tournament of Champions team at Yale University Our 12 Seniors have been awarded 44 Gold Medals and 22 Silver medals while our four Junior competitors have scored 6 Gold and 4 Silver medals Among the results coming through now Zoe Jasmin and Joaquin - 26th in Scholarrsquos Bowl Jodie Down - 13th in Individual Writing Challenge Bita Hannah and Jodie - 15th Team Writing Challenge Simho Dorothy Angelina - 14th in Team Challenge Simho Dorothy and Angelina - 19th overall-Team Champions Angelina Inthavong overall 70th place Simho Lee 95th place Jodie Down 110th place Dorothy Hou 129th place This is a truly outstanding achievement and even more remarkable when you consider our Seniors are only in Year 10 competing against 1800 of the worldrsquos finest students most of them older and with years of experience at this elite level We look forward to hearing their stories We will have more wonderful results to share next week

Champions

It has been a weekend to remember for our Senior and Junior Division Scholars in the US for the World Scholars Cup Tournament of Champions at Yale University While our Junior team members got stuck into competition our Seniors toured State Capitol in Hartford and were delighted to meet with State Senator Saud Anwar in the Senate Room where they discussed - among other things - Australias voting system

Prep Choir Performance at Arcare

Over the past two weeks students from all Prep classes travelled to our local Arcare facility to showcase their amazing musical skills We clambered onto the bus in much anticipation and within minutes had arrived at the village In class groups we walked with curiosity into the reception area To our excitement we all had to travel down in a small lift to where we were greeted with beaming smiles from our waiting audience We started our performance with the song Sweet Gingerbread Man We sang with gusto and everyone joined in even the nursing students from Griffith University Speeding through our repertoire we finished with our favourite song Down in the Farm We loved dressing up and we were thrilled when we received a rousing applause when our farmer shouted lsquodinnerrsquo Leaving behind a smile and wave we walked back to the bus home to school with our special memories of a wonderful trip Thank you to our wonderful Music teachers Ms Rachel Newcombe and Ms Nadia MacKenzie Also many thanks to Ms Rebecca Taylor for accompanying us and Ms Toni Kirton for organising the event Much fun was had by all Prep Teachers - Angie Hall Jacinta Lauder Peter Nicholls and Elisa Sutherland

The Planeteers have launched a new initiative inviting parents to help us on our mission to reduce single use plastic and cans from ending up in landfill

Each Tuesday morning between 745am and 815am (starting from 26 November and continuing into next year each Tuesday during term time) we will be here in the Marble Arch car park near this big red recycling bin The Planeteers want you to donate to us your 10c plastic bottles and cans (non-alcoholic) They will then be taken to be recycled into other goods with the proceeds to go towards our community garden

There are a few things we need your help with to make the process a little easier

1 Ensure that the containers you bring in have the 10c logo on them and are non-alcoholic bottles or cans (see lsquoYesrsquo image)

2 Remove all contents inside and give them a rinse so theyrsquore clean

3 Remove any lids from bottles as these cannot be recycled yet These can be put into your recycling bins at home (or if the lid is made of number lsquo2rsquo or lsquo4rsquo plastic keep them for potential projects starting in 2020)

4 Bring your items in a bag to the red bin where a friendly Planeteer and Miss Moore will be there to collect them

5 Feel amazing that yoursquove helped reduce landfill and helped the Planeteers raise money towards building our community garden

in the Collaborative Learning Centre (Upper Parkes Building)

on Thursday 21 November from 330pm - 5pm

for Years 7-12 in 2020 textbooks will be display from 330pm

This is an opportunity for students and parents particularly graduating Year 12s to buy and sell textbooks at a reduced cost It is recommended that books be sold for half their original price if they are in good condition and that cash transactions are the primary method of payment The College takes no part in these transactions but will assist with displays by year level and labels and pens for indicating sale prices and contact details

The Planeteers have launched a new initiative inviting parents to help us on our mission to reduce single use plastic and cans from ending up in landfill

Each Tuesday morning between 745am and 815am (starting from 26 November and continuing into next year each Tuesday during term time) we will be here in the Marble Arch car park near this big red recycling bin The Planeteers want you to donate to us your 10c plastic bottles and cans (non-alcoholic) They will then be taken to be recycled into other goods with the proceeds to go towards our community garden

There are a few things we need your help with to make the process a little easier

1 Ensure that the containers you bring in have the 10c logo on them and are non-alcoholic bottles or cans (see lsquoYesrsquo image)

2 Remove all contents inside and give them a rinse so theyrsquore clean

3 Remove any lids from bottles as these cannot be recycled yet These can be put into your recycling bins at home (or if the lid is made of number lsquo2rsquo or lsquo4rsquo plastic keep them for potential projects starting in 2020)

4 Bring your items in a bag to the red bin where a friendly Planeteer and Miss Moore will be there to collect them

5 Feel amazing that yoursquove helped reduce landfill and helped the Planeteers raise money towards building our community garden

Christmas Tree Decoration Challenge

Students in Prep to Year 6 are invited to create a homemade Christmas tree decoration The skyrsquos the limit in terms of how the decoration is created ndash however it must hang from a string and be a size suitable for a Christmas tree PRIZES A first Christmas-themed prize will be awarded to one student per year level in Week 8 of Term 3
