Dear Simmental Enthusiasts, It is with great pleasure that I write this letter. Duane and I are extremely excited to represent you, the breeders, as the sale management for your state sale. I have been in involved with sale management for several years organizing some of the largest small animal livestock sales in the Midwest. Although, I don't raise Simmental cattle, my wife Lindsey is a former Illinois Simmental Association Queen and we certainly hope our son follows in his mothers footsteps and shows Simmental cattle. Most all of you know Duane and understand his passion for pure- bred cattle, in particular Simmentals. We hope to serve you in the highest degree by putting on a first class sale that is efficient and enjoyable. A major change for the 2009 sale is the inclusion of a parade for sale cattle instead of the show that most of you are accustomed to. We hope this will allow for a wider variety of mar- keting strategies for your cattle. Please feel free to contact Duane or I with any questions you have regarding the sale. You will find our contact info on the nomination forms. Again we look forward to promoting your cattle and look with great enthusiasm towards the twenty first of February. Illinois Simmental Association “Working Together to Make a Difference”

April 4, 2008 Beth Mercer, Chairperson ASA Relocation Feasibility Study Committee 25286 1st Street Monte Alto, TX 78538 Dear Beth: Please accept this communication on behalf of the Illinois Simmental Association (ISA) Board of Directors who repre-sents the Illinois Simmental Association members. We were most pleased to learn that the American Simmental Asso-ciation (ASA) has established an Association Office Relocation Committee. The ISA believes that relocation of the Na-tional Office is long overdue. There are numerous reasons why relocation of the National Office to a more central U.S. location is warranted. As you well know an organization such as the ASA is a people business. Building allegiance and loyalty to a breed and its tradi-tions is paramount to the long term viability of a breed association. One of the factors that builds loyalty to an associa-tion is being able to personally identify with the staff and the national office. The fact that our current headquarters is remotely located in Montana and distant to the vast majority of ASA members does not promote loyalty nor a since of historical tradition among our members. The current perceived isolation of the national office may even discourage the personal identity of breeders to a common goal – promotion of Sim-Genetics as a whole as opposed to individual herd promotion. A central U.S. location for the national office and staff should encourage member/breeder visits to the office promoting breeder unity and member loyalty. A central national office should result in less travel expenses for board members and for staff. A central location would facilitate more staff – state association interaction than is currently affordable. The ISA encourages the Feasibility Committee to investigate alternative locations to the Bozeman, Montana and to the greater Kansas City, Missouri sites. Real estate and cost of conducting businesses may be less expensive in some of the midsized municipalities located throughout the Midwest with progressive regional airports and multiple interstate access. Cities that should be considered include: Bloomington, Illinois; Columbia, Missouri; Indianapolis, Indiana; Louisville, Ken-tucky; and Des Moines, Iowa, among other potential states. These white collar, upscale communities also have nearly unlimited technologically trained and computer literate populations who could easily be employed to assist in the opera-tion of the national office. Reluctance of staff to relocate is not an issue. Certainly, we all value vibrant, dedicated staff and staff longevity should always be a goal. However, maintaining a viable association through expanding membership and increasing cattle registrations is an overriding mission that may require relocation of the national office. Thank you for taking the initiative to consider relocating our national office - an activity long overdue. The ISA Board of Directors always welcomes the visit to one of our board meetings of any ASA Board member or anyone of the Relocation Feasibility Committee members. The ISA appreciates the time commitment so many are giving to this important task. Yours truly, Tom Engel, President Illinois Simmental Association
