A sense of fascination and wonder has always pulled me towards the
engineering marvels of the world. From the manmade islands of Dubai to
the Falkirk boat lift, these creations stand tall in my mind as symbols of
mankind’s ingenuity and capability. Whenever I’m bored, I will think of the
world around me and ponder the architecture that lies before me. We see
structures every day but we rarely ever consider the science behind their
construction. ave you ever considered the connection between a
building and a tree! "uildings, #ust like trees, must have solid foundations.
$rowing up, I never had many toys or gadgets, leaving me to entertain
myself with the physical world around me. In my mind, my littleconstructions from books and containers were cities of towering buildings
and skyscrapers, which I thought were a magni%cent sight to behold. &his
aptitude for creation remained a constant as I grew up. It was a secondary
school pro#ect that really sealed my interest for civil engineering. 'y
teacher had given everyone an assignment to build a miniature set of a
house. I spent the ne(t few weeks camping in a corner of my living room
toiling away, meticulously assembling the pieces of the house together. I
used a selection of materials to attain di)erent forms of te(tures that
would give the house its distinct features and characteristics. &he %ne
details are what di)erentiate *uality work from run+of+the+mill pro#ects.Finally, it was time to submit my work. 'y classmates were in awe of my
pro#ect and the teacher gave me an A. -/0 &o this day, that miniature
house is still on display in my living room as a memento of my future
ambition1 to be a civil engineer.
2reativity is the sword I wield to dispel my boredom, in which I escape into
my mind and forge my imagination into creations. &he need to e(press my
creativity combined with my passion for crafting has inspired me to
become a civil engineer1 to construct a masterpiece of civil architecture
and present it to the world is my biggest dream. Advancement in any %eldis the result of the cumulative pool of contributions and discoveries made
by each individual involved and I wish to contribute to the collective
engineering advancement of the world.
