Illinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academicdepartments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre

Arts. IWU remains among the nation's best values in private higher edu-cation, ranked No. 32 among Kiplinger's Personal Finance 100 BestValues in Private Colleges for 2010-11. Schools on the Kiplinger list wereranked by academic quality and the net price students pay to attend,with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total.

Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central fea-ture of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities forprofessional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratioof 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants intheir education, often working individually with faculty members onresearch. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrantcampus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complementthe primary academic mission.

About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduateschool, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools,and in other advanced degree programs.New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place wherebooks, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are comple-mented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym hasresulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet thesocial, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’sattractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center forAthletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learningand Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a resi-dence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997).The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from the

Russell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk familyowns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. Thetwo-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performancearena, and contains four multi-use courts for tennis, volleyball, basket-ball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room andwellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the JackHorenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologi-cally-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teachinglabs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for LiberalArts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social sci-ence, humanities, business and economics.Distinguished Speakers. RICHARD F. WILSON,

PRESIDENTRichard F. Wilson became the 18th presi-dent at Illinois Wesleyan in July 2004.

Since 1978 Wilson has served in a num-ber of roles at the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign, most recently (since1996) as Vice President of the U. of IllinoisFoundation. He was responsible for all pri-vate fundraising on the Urbana campus,including leading campus efforts to achieveits $1 billion goal as part of the university’scomprehensive campaign.

From 1986 to 1994, Wilson was Associate Chancellor, leadingefforts to incorporate computing technologies into instruction andproviding oversight of intercollegiate athletics. In 1994, he becameAssociate Chancellor for Development and Deputy Director of theUniversity of Illinois Foundation. Since 1981 Wilson held an adjunctteaching position in the College of Education, most recently asAdjunct Professor of Higher Education.

Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics fromAlderson-Broaddus College (W.Va.), where he earned honors inboth academics and athletics.

Wilson pursued advanced degrees at the University of Michigan,earning both the master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education.

Wilson and his wife, Pat, have two children — Adam, who lives inSan Francisco, and Rachel, who lives in Springfield, Ill.

In 2012, Dennis Martel will begin his 25th sea-son as baseball coach at Illinois Wesleyan. Hehas the most coaching wins at the school andled the team to the 2010 NCAA Division IIInational championship, for which he was namedthe American Baseball CoachesAssociation/Diamond Sports Division III“National Coach of the Year” as well as theregional “Coach of the Year” for the second time

Martel’s teams have compiled an overall record of 623-386-3 (.617) withseven College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships. InCCIW play only, Martel's teams have a record of 302-131 (.697). In 2008,Martel eclipsed the win total of Jack Horenberger to become the school'sall-time baseball coaching leader in victories. Horenberger had a recordof 509-401-5 in 37 seasons at the Titan reins.

In 2011, the Titans were 28-18 to become the 12th straight Wesleyanteam to win 24 or more games. IWU won the regular season phase of theCCIW and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament.

The 2010 national championship team finished the season with 11 winsin their final 12 games to capture the national title, finishing with a 31-21 record. The Titans were the No. 4 seed in the CCIW tournament andstaved off elimination twice on the final day to win the tourney and earna berth into the NCAA regional. IWU was the No. 6 seed in the six-teamregional and swept the four games to advance to the national champi-onship round for the second time ever and first time since 2001.

IWU was 24-16 in 2009 with a 14-7 mark in the CCIW.

In 2008, the Titans were 33-11, won the CCIW championship with an18-3 mark and played in the NCAA Division III regional.

In 2007, Martel was co-winner of the league’s “Coach of the Year” honoras the Titans were 32-13, won the CCIW title with a record-setting 20-1mark, and hosted the NCAA Division III regional.In 2006, the Titans were 28-14 and 14-7 in the CCIW. Martel's 2005

team was 34-13 overall, won the CCIW title and advanced to the NCAADivision III regional. In 2004, the Titans were 28-19, won the league titleand played in the NCAA Division III regional. Martel's 2001 teamadvanced to the Division III College World Series and earned a seventhplace finish. The Central Regional champions, the 2001 Titans set aschool record with 37 wins and Martel was named the region's "Coach ofthe Year" by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Five straight teams (1994-98) won 24 or more games and the 1998 teamwon 31.

Martel has coached two first team American Baseball CoachesAssociation All-Americans (2B Ricky Angel, 2007; OF James Rinne,1997), six second team honorees (RHP Jason Pankau, 2011; LHP MattAronson, 2007; OF Nick Chilczenkowski, 2006; LHP Cory Lapinski,2005; RHP Steve Schilsky, 2001; and C Jay Ahrendt, 1996); and threethird team selections (1B Kevin Callahan, 2011; RHP Jason Pankau,2010; and 2B Ryan Gilfillan, 2001).

Six of Martel's players have signed pro baseball contracts - lefthandedpitcher Cory Lapinski (2005, Houston Astros), righthanded pitcherDrew Himes (2005, Houston Astros), righthanded pitcher Steve Schilsky(2002, Oakland A's), outfielder James Rinne (1998, ArizonaDiamondbacks), catcher Jay Ahrendt (1996, Baltimore Orioles) andcatcher Mike Brown (1991, Los Angeles Dodgers).

An assistant professor of physical education, Martel also spent 21 sea-sons as IWU's full-time assistant basketball coach before becomingdirector of basketball operations in 2007. He is a 1984 graduate of theUniversity of Maine with a degree in physical education and earned amaster's degree in athletic administration from Illinois State in 1985. Hewas also the head basketball coach at Bangor (Maine) CommunityCollege for four seasons.

He and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of three daughters - Sara (bornOctober 1995), Jenna (April 1998), and Anna (May 2001).

Jack Horenberger Baseball Field,opened in 1999, is named for thelongtime IWU coach and athleticdirector, who died at age 87 in2000. A 1936 IWU grad, he was theschool's baseball coach (from 1942-81), basketball coach (1945-65) andathletic director (1947-81).Horenberger was a star baseballshortstop and a standout basketball

guard at IWU, serving as captain of the 1935-36 basket-ball team, the only undefeated (20-0) basketball team inschool history. In his 37 years as baseball coach histeams had an overall mark of 509-401-5 (.559) and were319-98-1 (.764) in CCIW play. His CCIW record wasnever below .500 and his teams won 16 titles. His 21-year basketball coaching record was 264-212. Amonghis former players who have succeeded in professionalbaseball are Bobby Winkles (former Oakland andCalifornia manager); Doug Rader (former player andmanager); catcher Cal Neeman, shortstop Lyle Luttrell,and pitcher Jack Pregenzer.

Matt Willey has been an assistantbaseball coach on Dennis Martel'sstaff since 1997. A fullt-time teacherof physical education atBloomington Junior High School,Willey has a bachelor's degree fromNorth Dakota State University. Heand his wife, Mary, are the parentsof four children - Rebekah, Paul,Daniel and Adam.

Tim Siegworth is a former pitcherfor the Illinois Wesleyan teams ofthe mid 1970s. The lefthander hada 16-3 overall record from 1974-77and a career earned run average of2.85 in 142 innings and still ranksNo. 5 among Titan career records.A full-time employee of the NormalParks and Recreation Department,Tim is married to Mary Horgan-Siegworth.

Also assisting with the Titan base-ball program is the 1991 team’s“Most Valuable Player” MikeBrown. A catcher who played in theminor league system of the LosAngeles Dodgers, Brown batted.326 with 11 doubles, eight homersand 29 RBI in 1991 and had a .597slugging percentage. In 1990 heclubbed 11 doubles and had 30RBI.

Dennie Bridges’ association with IllinoisWesleyan began when he enrolled as astudent in 1957. Bridges retired inMarch 2001 after 36 seasons as basket-ball coach with a career record of 667-319, second most all-time among NCAADivision III coaches. His 1997 team was29-2 and won the Division III champi-onship, while his 1996 (28-3) and 2001(24-7) teams each placed third national-

ly. His teams won 17 conference championships and quali-fied for the Division III playoffs 14 times in 18 seasons.Since Bridges became athletic director (1981), the ShirkCenter, Fort Natatorium and Jack Horenberger BaseballField have been built, as well as new facilities for soccerand softball. Bridges, who graduated in 1961 and beganhis IWU coaching career in 1964, earned letters in basket-ball, baseball and football and was all-conference in bas-ketball and football as an IWU player. Bridges and his wife,Rita, have three grown children, all IWU graduates and for-mer Titan athletes. Eldest son Steve was a four-year foot-ball letterman and was an Academic All-American.

Three former Illinois Wesleyan baseballplayers were inducted into various Halls ofFame in 2006-07. Denny Matthews, a 1966grad who will begin his 40th season behindthe microphone in the Kansas City Royalsradio booth this year, was the 2007 winnerof the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcastingexcellence and was honored at the NationalBaseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonieson July 29, 2007 in Cooperstown, N.Y.,when Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. wereinducted.

Dave Kindred, a 1963 grad, was inductedon April 30, 2007 to the NationalSportscasters and Sportswriters AssociationHall of Fame in Salisbury, N.C. Kindred hasbeen a newspaper columnist for 37 yearsand is a multiple winner of the "NationalSportswriter of the Year" award.

Former Arizona State coach BobbyWinkles was among the first 10 peopleinducted into the College Baseball Hall ofFame in July 2006. Winkles, a 1952 IWUgrad, was the NCAA “Coach of the Year” in1965 and 1969 and The Sporting News”Coach of the Year” in 1965, 1967 and 1969when his team won national championships.Among the future major leaguers Winklesrecruited and coached at ASU were RickMonday, Sal Bando, and Reggie Jackson.
