This catalogue showcases a diverse and varied set of illustrative works produced by this year’s graduates of the BA (Hons) Illustration Course at the University of Portsmouth 2009.
The Illustration course offers students an opportunity to question, refl ect and analyse their own work and its commentary in the context of the work of other designers, illustrators, fi lm makers, painters, sculptors, writers etc.
Previous graduates have gained employment across the whole spectrum of art, design and media, which is evidenced through a recently conducted destination survey. Some examples include freelance illustration, publishing, cover design, design and marketing agencies, multimedia design agencies and website design.

I have a love of all things art and since a young age I have always been attracted to creating and making art. I mainly enjoy working in inks, watercolours, collage and acrylics but more recently I have found a new love for print making. I fi nd the freedom of being able to create an image from any object into print in a variety of different methods truly magical.
I am inspired by the emotions and feelings of a person, expressing and visualising the inside thoughts of an individual and bringing those thoughts to life through any media. This has always played a big role in my work. I am infl uenced by the works of Francis Bacon, Edvard Munch, Jonathan Wayshak, Gerald Scarfe and Graham Rawle.
The main area of illustration I have a particular interest in is children’s books, I have found that I really enjoy drawing and illustrating children’s stories as they can be so imaginative and adventurous, making the journey of illustration that bit more fun for me.
My hopes for the future will include the opportunity to illustrate children’s books as well as being able to diversify in to other projects that will explore my creative talents.

My primary aim as an illustrator is to help people understand complicated concepts illustrating them in an easily comprehensible way, but I cannot do that without understanding them myself. Thus, thorough research is the foundation for everything I do, and I never make images without knowing all there is to know about my subject fi rst. I have three main passions; book making, print making and typography, and I aim to combine these passions whenever possible within my work. I make books because of the challenges involved. Selecting the right materials, appropriate binding, right images and typography can be diffi cult, but when you achieve it, and combine everything with care and precision, it is possible to create something beautiful. I enjoy the processes involved in various print making techniques, but especially etching. Scratching an image into a plate and watching it fi zz as the acid bites is a great feeling, surpassed only by the end result, as inky metal is lifted from paper to reveal an infi nitely repeatable image. However, these are relatively new passions compared to typography. I regularly experiment with hand-drawn type, creating stylised letterforms to compliment my images. I prefer this to computer generated type by far, as hand-rendered text is more personal and works better with my illustrative approach.
I am devoted to what I do and with my time at university reaching its end I fi nd it hard to imagine doing anything else besides working as an illustrator. I would like to continue self publishing books and zines via my website while commissioning work.

Within my work I try to visually create and capture the experience of travel. My aim is to take people on a journey and make them think and respond to their surroundings and to look at everything in a new and exciting way.
The way I present my concepts and illustrations is predominately through books. I start with an idea and research it thoroughly using mind maps which allows the project to develop through its own journey. Then I use photography, ephemera, collage and found objects to provide an illustrative solution using Photoshop software. I produce books as my fi nal pieces as I also use haiku, poetry and narrative to accompany my work.
For my fi nal degree work I am producing a series of books under the titles Global Diaries – ‘Home’, ‘Away’, ‘Transit’ and ‘Underwater’. The books will be a series of photographs, sketches, diary entries and memorabilia from my travels.
Accompanying this will be jewellery from my travels that is now an online business that is part of my professional promotion. I have also done work practice as a student event fundraiser for Barnardo’s children’s charity. I arranged fund raising events where all the money raised went to Barnardo’s. This has also given me the opportunity to apply for the Chartered Institute of Marketing Career Development Award.

Ever since I was a child I have had a passion for drawing. As I grew older my love of drawing was realised into a love of illustration and a desire to become an illustrator.
I illustrate in a considered, intricate manner, taking great attention to detail. I like to use a wide variety of techniques, favoured mediums including pen and ink, screen printing, mono printing and embroidery. I also like to manipulate my images using graphic software.
My infl uences are quite diverse. I love to create images of the human form and am infl uenced by fashion illustration; fashion illustrators I admire include Stina Persson and Julie Verhoeven. I also take inspiration from different countries and cultures, for example the Voodoo cultures of the Caribbean and Aboriginal culture in Australia. My most recent work has been writing, designing and illustrating a children’s book inspired by Aboriginal Dreamtime. Titled Bilby the Koala, the story follows a mother and baby koala’s adventures in the Australian bush. The images I created for the book were embroidered using a variety of fabrics, beads and embroidery threads, but still exhibit the same linear qualities that I like my pieces to possess.
I aim to begin a career in a design or illustration fi eld after I graduate, with the ultimate goal of becoming a freelance illustrator.

During my time on the Illustration course at the University of Portsmouth I gained knowledge on working with printmaking, using design software, sequential illustration, website design, working within a group, presenting work, designing projects and understanding how important research is to my personal projects and fi nal outcomes.
My fi nal year project utilises what I enjoy and how I like to work. I have chosen to take on the topic of social anxiety disorder by creating an awareness of how it can affect sufferer’s lives through a medium that would catch people’s attention. Through research, I discovered sufferer’s thoughts and feared situations, and felt a book containing short stories using humour as a tool to take away the stigma of the subject should be created.
The book contains fi ve different characters, in fi ve different ways using various mediums designed as metaphors for negative thoughts, symptoms and feared situations.
I have been able to create and write my own stories and style characters, keeping close to source material. I experimented with creating sequential art, front covers and trademark fonts. I have also gained knowledge on T-shirt design, book cover design, book making, zines, Christmas card design and character design. I would like to carry on creating and designing within these areas after the course is fi nished.

Within my work, I like to experiment with textures to produce collaged illustrations and felt characters. I also like to work in Photoshop to combine photographs and handmade collage with type, fi lters and fl at colour. This means a lot of my illustrations involve a mixture of these techniques. When I want more than Photoshopped illustrations, I use silkscreen printing to create a similar fl at colour effect that I fi nd visually pleasing and enjoyable to produce.
My current illustration work is a study of 10 emotions; I have produced both 3D characters and 2D collages of the characters. These pieces of work demonstrate the style in which I most enjoy working in.
My future aspirations are simply to continue producing work that I enjoy; I aim on selling my work online. I would love to illustrate greeting cards and perhaps one day see them on the shop shelves.

My name is Jasmine Chandler, I am currently 22 years old and originate from the sunny Isle of Wight. From as far back as I can remember I have always loved to be creative, draw and express myself through art, from a young age I would rather spend time doodling and drawing in one of my many personal sketchbooks, developing my images to create something original. This strong interest has led me through various stages of artistic education, some examples being an AVCE double A-level and a foundation diploma, not to forget I have recently completed a degree in illustration at Portsmouth University. One of my fi nal projects that I recently worked on there I wish to continue working on for as long as possible, a line of collectable hand-made dolls based on emotions, feelings and empathy (Little Empathies), I have found these dolls to be very successful and attract a lot of attention therefore encouraging me to want to make and sell them from now on using various methods such as my website for advertising and visiting local craft fairs. I also look forward to having extra time on my hands because of no coursework to complete commissions and hopefully sell some of my personal work. For the future I have my heart set on becoming a teacher, possibly teaching ages twelve and upwards. I hope to pass on my enjoyment and excitement of the subject onto a younger generation, encouraging them to get the most out of art and maybe keep it as an option for themselves to take it up through one of its many areas and subjects as part of a full time career.

Body modifi cation is my current obsession. I’m really interested in the ways people choose to customize and re-design their bodies. The skin becomes a canvas, and the body, a mobile work of art. I’ve always had a fascination with the human body and enjoy using it in my work.
I like to work in a variety of different ways. Depending on the subject matter, or what mood I’m in, I’ll draw, sew, paint, collage, papier-mâché… or combine the whole lot! I love to experiment and get my hands dirty. I tend to make 3D works and then either scan or photograph them so I can then experiment with them further in a 2D format. My work generally tends to have a provocative feel to it and can have a dark and surreal quality at times. I enjoy producing work that questions the viewer and creates some sort of reaction in them.
Many things inspire me to make work, such as music, tattoos, fashion, friends and family, but especially textual research, which is a great starting point for me to create imagery from. I occasionally like to combine text with my images because I feel it can be used to enhance it and make it more informative.

My work is based upon spies because it is a subject that I most fascinated by. I am a fan of most spy moves such as James Bond, Austin Powers and Get Smart, which I fi nd quite comical and enjoyable to watch. There is a more serious side to this and the everyday people who work and protect our country from terrorist threats by gaining information.
My work explores the importance of camoufl age within the armed forces. I like the fabric and wanted to investigate its history and to fi nd out more about its purpose, looking towards fashion crazes and styles behind this pattern which was created by accident and has made the armed forces are today.
I aimed my work at a younger audience because I found in my research many books for children surrounding the theme spies. I became highly interested in the way the books were presented and how they contained home made gadgets and activities to perform to make you own.
This infl uenced my work as I started to make my own gadgets out of old mobile phones, digital clocks, cameras, camera fi lm and a compact mirror. As gadgets are a very important part of a spies kit, I wanted to show this by making new gadgets. I wanted these to appear to be used by a female spy.
I enjoyed working with 3D objects by customizing and recreating them to form something new, I used these images then create an artist’s book, and I enjoyed using Photoshop and Illustrator to manipulate and create each page.

I came to university with many creative ideas, but without a means of developing them. Now since being here I have gained knowledge and understanding of the creative process. I learned many new skills and have gained confi dence within my own creative abilities. I believe I now posses the tools required to produce the kind of work I want to.
My main interest is in children’s book and resource illustrations. I have been working on the development of the character and worked through the stages from the initial character design, the making of a 3D product from the design, then to produce a logo and website design, and also book illustration and production including the marketing. I have been greatly supported and guided in this area by the Portsmouth university centre for business enterprise. When I leave university I have many new ideas to pursue and develop and now feel confi dent that I can do this.
My other interest is feminity and expression, looking at the natural emotional growth and well being of women. I began this study within my fi nal self-directed project, and feel I have only just started. I aim to continue to produce more work related to this subject. I am interested in making cards, posters and books, and hopefully will produce work that will inspire women. My interests include ceramics, textiles photography, print, collage and Photoshop.

My fi nal major project explores the theme of the unconscious mind, and my aim is to visualise and simplify often complex theories of unconscious thought processes in an attractive and exciting way. I create my work using various techniques including collagraphing, ink blots and monoprinting, and have recently started to experiment with my images in Photoshop and Illustrator. I create the plates for the collagraphs using different textures such as buttons, rice, string and lace, to produce really interesting shapes and patterns. I also combine text with my imagery using letrasets, letter prints and handwritten text. Often I will use a simple colour palette of black and white with one colour, predominantly red or pink, in my work. I have been infl uenced by artists such as Miro and his almost childlike ‘automatic’ drawing and Guilherme Marconi’s combination of ink blots, 1950’s collage and doodles. In my fi nal year of the course I have discovered an interest in making greeting cards, working in this area is something I would consider for the future. My card designs are inspired by imagery of the 1950’s, the colours, text, and fabrics used in the simplistic, quirky designs of this time. Artist’s books have been another area I have discovered an interest in, and have begun to experiment with my images in book form including concertina books, as I fi nd this way of working on a long scale really exciting.

I am based in Southampton and have enjoyed my time at the University of Portsmouth, especially meeting new people which has enabled me to expand my network of contacts for the future. I have learnt many skills, both conventional and contemporary.
The process for much of my work is to do traditional illustrations and then adapt them using Adobe Photoshop to achieve a fi nal result. Printmaking forms a large part of my visual work. I am competent at mono printing, lino print, rubber stamp print and have recently learnt collography which has been successful. It was also interesting to learn how to assemble books and bind them.
My competence with digital photography, graphic design and Photoshop proved invaluable to me with my professional practice. This included assistance and consultancy for an exhibition stand at Southampton International Boat Show. Also the development of corporate imagery for advertising, entrance signs and a mobile display unit was carried out for a local charity which operates an outdoor activity centre. As I am inspired by nature and the outdoors, and I have been infl uenced by the artists Kurt Jackson and Emma Dibben who have the same passion for the countryside and I particularly like their style.
After graduating I would like to gain more experience by working for a professional company for a few years before going freelance and having my own studio.

I am a – very – mature student who arrived at an illustration degree via an access course and a Saturday morning art course at the South Downs College. Always keen on drawing, I have found it quite diffi cult to unlearn the habits I acquired in childhood. I am dangerous with a pencil or paint brush in my hand, so over the course of the degree I have tried to explore other ways of working which would force me to create in a more “free” and instinctive way. I have used close-up photography of images of random paint and ink splashes found in the studio and have cropped and printed these to conjure up images of maps or the earth seen from above. I have also experimented with making prints from printing ink applied to Perspex, using four colours: black, white, blue and yellow. Again, I was trying to work intuitively to create map-like images which would fi t in with my themes. I am fascinated by the imagery and shorthand – such as maps, music script, text, mathematical equations and art - we use to refer to, or stand in for, our perceived reality. These signs only have meaning if we interpret them using our previous experience and learning, without which, they would remain meaningless. It is not too great a leap from this to the philosophical standpoint, infl uenced by the uncertainty into the reliability of our perceptions introduced by quantum theory; that the Universe itself consists of information which we interpret according to our beliefs and education. I hope that my work which contains unplanned, random images re-interpreted with text, and symbols borrowed from maps and suchlike will both exemplify and illustrate these ideas.

Fabric and stitch play a large part in my illustration work, I love the texture and fi nish they create and the tactile quality. I like to use various materials and embellishments (especially buttons!), often making 3D objects which I then photograph and combine with text. I love the handmade elements that are shown through my work.
I have a passion for typography, especially hand-drawn, as I feel it is more personal and full of character, my work demonstrates this.
I experiment with different ways of creating imagery then combine various elements in Photoshop, to create mixed media pieces. Research is extremely important in my creative process as it gives me a full understanding of the subject matter and helps generate ideas that are unique and exciting. I enjoy working to a challenging brief; therefore, the majority of my work has been on combining science and art. I love how art can provide an extra dimension to the public engagement of science and stimulate new thinking in audiences. I feel that art can make science more appealing to a broader range of people. Social awareness issues are also of interest to me as I enjoy sparking a reaction in audiences.

I create images using a wide variety of media. I approach each brief in a different manner so as to constantly challenge myself and give myself the opportunity to research and explore new areas of design. My experimental work often consists of line drawings and various prints which have been accessible to me at university, and as my fi nal designs start to become realised I use Photoshop or Illustrator to refi ne and add colour to the image.
My self directed project is a visual exploration of the ‘Nature vs. Nurture’ debate. Through my research I have arrived at visual conclusions using circuit board imagery to depict the idea that we are programmed to be a certain way. My self directed work often concludes in the same way; rather than making a statement, I ask a question. My work is to inspire thought as an alternative to declaring my opinion. I feel this makes my work more accessible to a wider audience.
My client based work has been varied and creatively inspiring for me as an illustrator. Working for the student magazine ‘Pugwash’ has given me the chance not only to have my work displayed to the student body, but the articles I have illustrated have been so varied that it has given me the opportunity to use a different technique for each issue. I have also been a research assistant for the ‘Zineopolis’ website, designed a logo for a new business and taken part in the ‘Exhibit A’ student and graduate exhibition.

To create my artwork I primarily use acrylic paint, spray paint, posca pens, fi mo clay and collage. I work as a 2D and 3D illustrator, more favouring the 3D way, creating characters and sets. I’ve always been fascinated by stop-frame animation and my degree work has always led me towards it.
After graduation I aim to work within the animation industry, whether it be character design, storyboarding or model making. As well as all things art, I enjoy snowboarding, marmite sandwiches and wearing fresh kicks. Heinz tomato ketchup is my meal time accessory, I am allergic to glow sticks, and I don’t like heights. Oh, apparently I have old lady qualities...

I feel my work is based around humour and tragedy. I try to combine the disturbing with the humorous to get a certain edgy feel to my art.
I am also interested in the grotesque and bizarre aspects of art, maybe it’s a morbid fascination I have with these. If something looks weird than it’s more likely to grab my attention. If I don’t produce art to a certain weirdness then I am not really satisfi ed with it.
Enjoyment is also very important in making art. If I can chuckle at my own creation then I feel an accomplishment of some sort!

I love to paint, particularly with watercolours and acrylics. I enjoy drawing and storyboarding and experimenting with different materials. I am also very interested in particular printing methods and I love discovering new and weird textures by printing from random found objects. My artwork is usually very experimental and detailed – this is the way I enjoy working. My more recent and favourite work has been painted or collaged. Even though I often use these mediums, recently I have found another side to me that also enjoys more graphics-based work. I am beginning to appreciate typography, simplifi ed drawings and manipulating work using the basics on Photoshop.
I have three published children’s books called ‘The Trumblies’ written by Jean Leech and illustrated by myself which is probably my most successful work so far. We have a website at www.trumblies.com where we sell the books and merchandise such as toys and Trumbly greetings cards. The business has been going for about three years. After all the hard work, we are making sales to friends, families and schools.
In the future I hope to collaborate with groups of other illustrators. I once did work experience in a small business that designed children’s clothes and really enjoyed the working atmosphere and seeing their beautiful illustrations. This is defi nitely the sort of place I would like to work. Maybe I could start up my own small business. I would also one day like to work freelance but this would be later on in life.

The body of work that I have produced within this self directed project is a refl ection to the question of how and why do we as humans strive to recreate life. From the early days of Alchemy with the fascination of creating the homunculus, the present developments in cloning and humanoid robotics and the creation of imaginary characters contained within fi ction, my investigation has lead me to create my own series of life forms and characters based around my research into these areas.
My main sources of inspiration for this project has been taken from the vinyl toy scene such as companies like Toy2R and Kidrobot, but have also drawn much inspiration from illustrators and pervasive artists such as Hans Bellmer, Gary Baseman and Jon Burgerman respectively, all of which have had a very strong infl uence on my development.
Throughout this project, I have realised much about my working methods and adaptability and decided to create a series of illustrations and products based around my subject in the forms of packaged designer plush toys, apparel and ’zines. I am pleased with my fi nal outcomes and I feel that they refl ect my chosen subject matter in a way that is marketable as a product.

I am Chris Mayhew and the main focus of my style is to create a humorous cartoon outcome. It should come across funny making the audience laugh and hopefully to educate. My interest is in history about the British military and current events today. So I took my knowledge and used it in my fi nal major project to create my cartoon books. Using the same theme throughout I tried to have different outcomes for each mini project and to show my variety of style. I produced books for adults and also children to show I am able to create to a wider target audience, with a similar style but with a different approach to it. My future plans are to fi rstly try and get my history style book published as I believe it has potential in the market. Then from there hopefully grab some opportunities from the exhibitions that I am planning to attend with my work, and also try to get work out of the MoD, as I see most of my artwork going in there direction.
Doing collaboration work with course mates would be a really good way to expand and keep in touch with people, with different style of drawing from me. Also I would obviously, like most people, like to make a name of myself in the future.

The work I produce as an illustrator has a defi nite print bias. By using a variety of print methods my work refl ects the characteristics and attributes of a given subject, through colour, line and texture. Experimentation through different media has led to a universal array of printing methods from which a diverse variety of results have been achieved, which has enabled me to express my chosen subject in a manner appropriate to its given form. Of great importance to me is how the print is represented. I want it to convey the quality not only of the print but what the print itself entails. Therefore having a sympathetic quality not only to the image but also to what encompasses that image as a whole; it’s given aura, attributes, and characteristics that lie hidden within a subject that may or may not be so clearly defi ned. By means of print and the materials used I try and interpret these qualities, giving careful thought to all that the chosen subject has to offer. As in the subject Belladonna its attributes and physical capabilities all had to be conveyed through the materials used. What the print fi rst appears to be at face value has to have a hidden depth and quality, which is what as an illustrator and printer I hope to achieve. I have been greatly infl uenced by Kiki Smith her prints and use of materials, Jill Poole’s collagraphs and certain aspects of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography. It is my intention to continue producing prints in a wide variety of formats and possibly incorporate a range of soft furnishings developed from some of the prints and further continue to exhibit and sell my work wherever and whenever I can.

My project work tends to be deep and personal, provoking people into thinking about the subject. I like to take a serious interest in my subjects and throughout my degree I have tried to deal with various psychological aspects, such as perception. Less of an illustrator and more of a typographer, I have been classically trained in traditional graphic design skills and I am particularly infl uenced by the clean lines of the Bauhaus and Swiss Style. Neville Brody is a typographer that I admire. Hence, my work often focuses on the linear aspects inherent within any design. Before undertaking a degree in illustration, I embarked upon a BA in graphic design and the skills that I learnt on that course have been imported onto the illustration course and this too has had a big infl uence on the way that I work. Although fully conversant in board skills, I am also adept at Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I see software as just another tool, not the fi nal word in design. My greatest satisfaction comes from producing hand-drawn lettering. Travelling extensively from an early age has made me look and question. This way of looking at the world, this way of questioning, is also apparent throughout my work. I like working with layers and will use the qualities of translucent paper, fi lm, glass etc. to its best advantage, looking for the qualities of light, line, smoothness and depth, all of which are key to my work. I would like to gain experience with a traditional design agency that would allow me to develop the art of traditional hand-drawn typography before, eventually, owning and running my own design company. Tradition begets individuality.

I am Daniel Nash. I have been studying Illustration at Portsmouth University for two years, during which time I have developed a strong interest in sequential illustration and animation. I plan to get some work experience for a year and then go on to do a MA course at Brighton University in sequential illustration.
I feel my work is continually moving forward so has not really found its set style yet. I feel this has some downfalls but is also my great strength as it allows me to be fl exible in the work I produce, whether it is more graphic based media or traditional styled illustrative work. The images I have put forward I feel refl ect this diversity. For my fi nal major project I have produced a short animated fi lm, which is based around the contemporary themes of the modern environmental climate change and traditional Japanese mythology. The other image I have included is for my professional practice brief, based on mental health issues and in particular schizophrenia. I developed this image in a more contemporary graphic style.
I think my core strengths lie within compositional skills, colour harmonies and storytelling. I feel these images portray those strengths well.

Jonny Greenwood’s guitar solo, on Radiohead’s Paranoid Android, is just as inspiring to me as lazily wandering round the Tate Modern.
Ideas are important. I have lots of them. Some work, others don’t but I’m not afraid to give things a shot.I feel comfortable using a paintbrush or a graphics tablet to create, and have a fi rm grip on digital applications including Photoshop, illustrator, fl ash, Dreamweaver and Fireworks.
Seven years in the print industry has given me the experience I need to appreciate how art fi nds its way to becoming a commercial product. It’s still too early in my career to tie myself down to one medium, that’s why it’s important to try my hand at a variety of specialisms. I have already produced websites, zines, record covers and animations.
For my fi nal project I have created a visual dictionary. I am interested in bringing words to life through animation so that they speak for themselves. I see this as just the beginning of a bigger online project, which will hopefully encourage other artists to contribute to an ever expanding resource.

This year has seen my work progress quickly to something I really enjoy doing. My method and style utilise drawing inks and printmaking, creating line drawings that are fl owing and less regimented than they used to be. I try and let the drawing create itself with every project I do and each time new infl uences manifest themselves into my work. I like to combine different media with my drawings such as collage or mono printing and some Photoshop work as well but generally I do not like to mess around with the initial drawing too much.
My self-directed project has centred itself around the function of the brain and the relationship with the human. I am fascinated with the complexity of the brain and how such simple tasks undertake a great number of processes. My aim for this project was to somehow create a visual representation of the cognitive responses of some everyday tasks like touching something hot or relating to conversation.
When it comes to doing work outside of university, I have always been interested in the publishing side of illustration such as books, newspapers or magazines, and I think that my work refl ects those interests.

For my fi nal major project I have taken on the task of illustrating 3 of Isaac Asimov’s short stories. The stories have only ever been presented in verbal form so I decided to take the opportunity of illustrating them. The stories themselves are called “LIAR”, “Robot AL-76 Goes Astray” and “Robbie”. The image that you see is from AL-76. I wanted the image to have an instant impact on the eye and hopefully allow you to see the freedom in which I have expressed within the illustration. Each story that I am illustrating will be in a different style, as this will show my versatility.
Once all three stories are fi nished I will be sending them off to Apple, for them to make me a hardback book which can be viewed and handled by the public as pleased.

I like to work using a variety of techniques, from simple pen and ink, to collage and 3D, to Photoshop and Illustrator, there are so many ways to produce work that I don’t like to limit myself to one particular area. I enjoy mixing methods, starting work in one medium and then switching to another, to produce interesting results.
My self directed project took me into exploring evolution and the natural world, and as I have always been a big enthusiast of the natural world it was a delight to spend more time researching it. By doing so, it made me realise that the natural world is something that I would like to continue to be a factor in my work, and because of this, I intend to design an ABC book for children about birds, their various breeds, their environment and habits, to help children become interested and learn more about the natural world around them. I also hope to produce some prints for an independently funded bird sanctuary close to where I live, in a hope to raise some funds for them.
This year I have entered work into Macmillan children’s prize, as children’s storybooks are an area which I would ultimately like to be involved in.
I have also entered the New Designers show this year which I am very much looking forward to being a part of.

I’m working on exploring the notions of character, narrative and emotion – using created robot characters based on the character theory ‘The Five Temperaments of Man’ to be placed in a simple narrative involving the idea of modifying image through cosmetic surgery. Large scale prints of character sheets and screenshots accompany a short Flash animation. I favour 2D cartoon images, fi nished by hand either with pen and watercolour pencil or ink or a line-drawing scanned and computer fi nished in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. I am keen on drawing characters and have made illustrations for books, storyboards, posters and an animation. I have discovered a fondness for character design and animation, and as such have gained skills in Adobe Illustrator and Flash as a response. Furthermore I have experience working as a graphic designer for several months giving me more experience working with clients, briefs and short deadlines. I have edited photographs, created posters, worked with templates for CDs and newsletters; designed ideas for logos, books and had the opportunity to advance my knowledge of design and layout, alongside some experience working with programs as Quark Xpress, Corel Draw and Adobe InDesign. From this I have gained some freelance work involving posters for Funny Farm Comedy Clubs and a logo for a starting Media company. I would like to further develop my capabilities with animation and Flash, possibly create more complex animations and for a new challenge perhaps look into the fi eld of 3D animation and character design and a desire to work with comics or book illustration.

Hi, my name is Tia Stoneman and my project is titled ‘Here be Dragons’. This predominantly revolves around several main interests and combines them to be hopefully a fun and intriguing piece of work. I have a huge interest in natural history and love dinosaurs and animals; in fact I was torn between my love of art and my love of palaeontology but I think it’s obvious which one I chose to study. Another infl uential interest is that of mythology legends and fairytales, ever since I can remember I have been interested in legends and fascinated by the creatures within them. I also love to visit sites such as Stonehenge, and the Jurassic coast. The predominant infl uences develop from a book titled ‘The Lore of the Land’ by Jennifer Westwood and Jacqueline Simpson, this book details all of the sites in the UK of which has some form of local folklore/legends or paranormal activity attached to them, i.e. Dragon Hill in Uffi ngton, Oxford is reputed to be the site where the famous saint St. George slew the dragon! The idea of the project was to look specifi cally at Dragon legends in the south of the United Kingdom and constructed so as to appear as a scientifi c study journal, much the same as something Charles Darwin would have kept to record new species on the voyages of HMS Beagle. The main aim of the project is to inform and generally get people interested in British legends whilst approaching it light-heartedly and almost hoax like. As for the future well who knows...? I would love to illustrate children’s books or something which involves any of the above.

My works are inspired by set and window design, lighting, and any transparent source that absorbs light, creates shadows and adds depth. Finished pieces include, collage – incorporating found ephemera, printmaking, photography and creating type by hand. My works offer a balanced, but expressive and illustrative freedom of line and colour within them. I will bravely experiment with any medium in order to fi nd the right solution for a brief I take on.
I have recently been researching textual sources around the subject of window display, psychology, wallpapers, colour and the visual spectrum in the way humans see. I represent colours found from unexpected sources in photographic and three dimensional formats. I like to offer a hand crafted feel to my work and utilize various mediums and materials with the aim of surprising and entertaining adults in a fun and colourful way.
I have produced a wallpaper design in a series of colours, glass tiles and window/tile decals that offer a bright and bold display. I aim for my designs to be put to use in a practical and functional way. In addition to these artefacts, I have produced a series of 8 collectable photographic books in a spectrum of colours. My next body of work incorporates the recent discovery of producing acetate plates and projections of them. My projections involve placing colour in a grey urban context such as buildings, pavements, and roads. Colour found in natural environments inspires me to offer a platform to display my work and these works bring the ‘outside’ in and the ‘inside’ out.

I used the time during my fi nal year at Portsmouth to work on a project which focused on some of my main interests. I started off with a preliminary idea based around cryptozoology and mythological creatures. My intention was to create a short encyclopaedia which offered conceptual ideas and solutions as to how; for example, a dragon might be able to breathe fi re within reasonable biological limits. I’m a bit of a geek and questions like that fascinate me.
Concept art is an area I want to eventually move into but as the year progressed I found I wanted to focus more on individual characters rather than a species. I altered the project but kept the underlying theme of concepts, investigation and solutions. I turned to another constant source of fascination, dreams, more specifi cally dream creatures and characters.
The fi nal product is a concept art book called the “Dreamscapedia” which is a tie in to a fi ctional graphic novel my fi ctional author friend “Soenso” is working on. I never really thought about taking the story behind the “Dreamscapaedia” any further, but the more I add to it the more potential I see for a future series. For now though I’ll be attempting to crack my way into the entertainment industry as a concept artist and hopefully I can work on the stories I came up with this year as a sideline.

Throughout my life I have been drawn to colour and its use in conjunction with line. This has led to numerous forays into countless techniques, adapting my media and style to each brief. I love to draw from life, taking my time to produce a true to life outcome; it is both relaxing and rewarding. Another passion is taking on commissions for countryside and animal paintings. I am infl uenced by a wide variety of artists and illustrators, from Matt Stewart to Leonardo Da Vinci. I am inspired by talent from many different origins.
My fi nal project is based upon the life and travels of Alexander the Great. I plan to illustrate his journey from Pella in Macedon to the baking climate of Babylon. This will be shown from above, a ‘gods eye view’, in the form of a map and then made into a book. I will be using gold leaf, monoprint and Indian inks.
My goal for the future is to train to become a make up artist for fi lms and fashion. I plan to use the skin as my canvas.

My work is inspired by observations of my environment, the people that inhabit it and the situations that occur in it. I fi nd that beauty and humour often exist in unlikely places, and it is this that I wish to communicate with my audience. I am inspired by the way in which writers and musicians illustrate using text and song, this admiration results in the use of literature, poetry and music within my work.
The mix of infl uences encourages me to use a variety of different mediums. I have begun experimenting with embroidery and stitch, as well as creating marks, textures and patterns onto different fabrics using various techniques. Photography is an invaluable method of instantaneous note-taking and allows me capture light, tone, colour and depth for later exploration and experimentation.
Rain was the main focus of my Final Major Project; a reminder to the audience of its beauty and function. I wanted to encourage people to enjoy the rain and to appreciate its delicacy, vibrancy and consuming nature, even when it appears to be at its most miserable. The outcome of the project was enriched by fragments of poetry and highlighted to me the relationship between image and text, which is something that I am continuing to explore.

As an illustrator I have always enjoyed narrative and sequential illustration; I also carry a very strong interest in the movie/fi lm industry, and for these reasons my work tends to follow a narrative line. I have always been inspired by the concept art and storyboards produced for fi lms. As a result my work has been geared around pursuing storyboarding as a career, and combined with my enjoyment of sports, shows in my most recent project. My sketchbook work varies in style; my initial boards tend to be quite rough and sketchy, being more a quick expression of an idea than an attempt at clarity. My concept work, however, holds a little more structure and experimentation, using a range of materials both hands-on and digital based. For more resolved work I like to work predominately with grey marker pens, using acrylic white highlights and black drawing ink. These materials work well together in creating atmosphere and movement to a drawing, and most importantly they allow me to work quickly (an important trait for a storyboard artist). Using storyboards as a method of working I have produced a short three minute Animatic aimed at promoting running for its experiences and psychological benefi ts. This has been put together in i-Movie along with a narrative and sound effects; it is titled “NYC 1122”. Employment ambitions include working in America within the fi lm industry as a storyboard and concept artist and to experience storyboarding and conceptual art in the much wider fi eld of the entertainment industry, including advertisement and computer games. I also enjoy producing character design and children’s book illustrations, so see this as another avenue of work.

My years at Portsmouth have allowed me to craft my illustrative abilities into a style of working which I feel refl ects my persona – I have an optimistic, imaginative outlook which I use to infl uence my drawing. My fi nal self-directed project in particular has been a brilliant chance to explore and create new worlds from my thoughts. I like to include various other interests into my work – music, philosophy and humour, for example, play incredibly important roles in my life and are incorporated into my imagery as often as possible, so that my work is an extension of myself.
With time, I hope to be able to work within the book publication or music industries in varying capacities; my love for the arts in their purest forms draws me towards hand drawn illustration, the written word and composed sound above the largely computer-focused industry which exists today. Line is my primary tool and I have concentrated on developing my skills so that I can make the ideas in my head visually accessible and eventually use them for communication and entertainment.
I look forward to taking what I have learnt into the world with an open mind, so that I can learn more and, hopefully, provide inspiration to some of those I meet along the way.
