The Art Issue 2014 I LOVE YZER DARLING 3

One would think that the West Coast is fast asleep during the Winter months, but the list of events happening in June, July & August is proving otherwise.

From August you can find us at the Groote Post Country Market on the last Sunday of every month. Bring the family and enjoy country hospitality with entertainment for the kids, gourmet produce & hand crafted goods. Taste the Groote Post Rosé that Nick Pentz is making exclusively for the market. You won’t be able to find it anywhere else!

Dit

was glo waar vissermanne hul

gebly.

trekker speel.

from you

DieTrekkerinYzerfontein

GawieSteyn

Die storie is basies dat vroeër

jare (in die 80s) het boere en

plaaslike mense op die strand

gaan ry met 4x4 voertuie.

Gewoonlik het hulle taamlik

tiermelk gevat en dan die

hoogwater so bietjie onderskat.

In daai spesifieke geval het

hulle vasgeval en een van die

plaaslike boere gevra om hulle

met ‘n trekker te kom uitsleep.

Die hoogwater het hulle gevang

en die sand op daai strand is

bitter sag. Toe hulle die Land

Rover uit het toe bly die

trekker agter. Hy lê nou nog

daar! Anoniem

En soos hulle in Amerika sal sê You go Girl!

My transisie LA toe was ongelooflike smooth weens Frank Rautenbach en sy vrou, Leigh. Leigh is my beste maatjie hier en hulle het my met ope arms ontvang. Al hulle vriende het my vriende geword en ek het nog nie ’n dag van isolasie of eensaamheid hier beleef nie. Dis werklik wonderlik en LA is ’n baie gebroke stad met bitter baie eensame mense. Dis a huge stad so ek is baie baie lucky.

Awesome storielyn. Ek sien so uit. Ek gaan in Junie weer in SA wees.

Ek love LA.

Is jy mal? Hehe, maar hulle sê tog as jy die Amerikaanse aksent aanleer, moet jy dit so oefen, jou eie taal probeer namaak met ’n Amerikaanse aksent. Dit werk. So stilletjies in my kar, ja.

Watter goed in LA wil jou daar laat aanbly?Hier is ‘n kruidenierswinkel, Trader Joes. Ek sal hier bly net vir Trader Joes.

Wie is vir jou ʼn mooi vrou in SA?Daar is so baie mooi vrouens in SA. My ma, Ingrid, my skoonsuster Roné, ongelooflike vrouens.

Wie is vir jou ʼn mooi man in SA?Aangesien ek gesê het my ma moet ek seker nou sê my pa, Cecil. Dis nou ’n mooi man daai!

Een van my geliefkoosde stellings oor kuns is deur George Adéagbo (kunstenaar van Benin) “Art, but what is art? Art is a way of talking. It’s a way of walking. It’s a way of showing things to people in an indirect manner… a way of living amongst people.”

‘n Graad in beeldende kuns was deel van my intrekbaggasie.

Kunsmaak is ook so.

Daardie jaar se tema was Fare Mondi of Making Worlds. Daniël Birnbaum kurator van 2009 se biennale het geskryf: “A work of art is more than an object, more than a commodity. It represents a vision of the world, and if taken seriously must be seen as a way of making a world.”

Darling Galery gee hopelik ‘n kykie in ons kontrei se kuns. ♥

When did you realise that art is your passion?

I have always enjoyed art. After I matriculated, I went to study fine art.

How old were you when you had your first exhibition and where was it?It was in 2001 at The Elsie Balt Art Gallery at Evita se Perron in Darling.

What is your favourite medium?Oil paint is the most forgiving medium. You can play with colour, brushstrokes, create and recreate all in one sitting. When it is dry you can take it to the next level and make the painting come alive with feeling, emotion and depth. Each painting evolves and becomes its own.

Do you have a ‘muse’? Who or what is it?I like my work to evolve and become its own. There is always a feminine element in my painting. The Nguni Cow, the Moon & Bird symbolises the female either being motherly, grounded to earth, free in flight or to be in touch with the bigger universe or just to be. The viewer perceives a painting through their own eyes therefore I would like each painting to speak for itself.

Where can the readers view or buy your art?I teach and paint from my studio at home. I do mostly commissions and take part in our local exhibitions held in Darling. I am working towards my next solo exhibition. My art can be viewed at my studio in Darling.

Did you have art education at school or at a tertiary institution?I had art at school. Completed a BAFA at Technikon Pretoria in 1996.

Do you have any advice for new artist? You must enjoy the process of creating, art is a journey. Allow yourself to play, explore your subject matter, medium and techniques. It is amazing what can be created through play. Always push your boundaries because you are on your own journey.

Do you ever have a mental block when you can’t create anything? You need to feed your own imagination. It is always good to go to galleries and exhibitions and get inspired by other artists. Another good way to get inspiration is to put colour on your palette and just start playing with colour on a canvas and see where it takes you. ♥

Wen ‘n Sondag ete vir 2 & ‘n leeu toer by die Weskus Padstal. Hoeveel wit leeus is daar by die Weskus Padstal? Inskrywings sluit 31 Aug 2014. Voorwaardes geld.

Diestorie

vanNicolaasmaritz

Hy was nie bankrot nie. ♥

The Art Issue 2014 I LOVE YZER DARLING 1312 I LOVE YZER DARLING The Art Issue 2014

When did you realise that art is your passion? It seems forever...first exposure was from my grandmother, Beatrice, or better remembered as Baby Versveld’s Art.

How old were you when you had your first exhibition and where was it?My first exhibition was at my farm stall, Vygevallei, on the West Coast road in the 90s.

What is your favourite medium? Oil.

What is your favourite subject?Flowers & seascapes, but I go through phases where I tackle

other subjects.

Where can the readers view or buy your art?At my current business, Club Café (Yzerfontein’s Sport & Recreation Club), Café Mosaic in Darling and Darling Gallery.

Did you have art education at school or at a tertiary institution?Part time art classes in school and studied art at the University of Stellenbosch. I received training with a variety of artists and as a graphic artist at a printing factory in Paarl.

Do you have any advise for new artists? j Buy the best canvas & paint possible. j Be careful of staying with one teacher for too long. Advice

and training is good, but the best is to develop your own style so that your work is identifiable and unique.

j Keep some of your work as you progress and sell the rest. j As a business woman I have one small piece of advice:

Your art won’t sell if it is hidden away in your house. Get it out there and be inspired by a sale.

j As the previous owner of Vygevallei Farm Stall, I sold my own art and those of local artists over a period of 13 years. Now at Club Café I am fortunate enough to once again have wall space for local artists and my own work. Finding wall space is a problem for most artists. I have also noticed that most artist don’t have the self confidence to market their work.

Do you ever have a mental block when you can’t create anything?Yes, everyday life gets in the way of painting. The ideal situation would be enough time to paint, perfect conditions and lots of inspiration and discipline. But I love my life and can’t complain. I don’t mind making time for painting, even if it is in the middle of the night. I am fortunate to have a small studio in Club Café, so during less busy times I slip into the studio and get my hands dirty, which I love! Nothing beats the smell of wet oil paint and turpentine. I do take commissions, but mostly I paint what I feel inspired by and when inspired!

Art keeps me sane while the world goes crazy. ♥

Ek onthou hoe ek as kind sulke abstrakte tekeninge

Kreatiwiteit is soos suurstof!

By my studio asook sekere galerye. Mense kan my gerus kontak.

Most people have heard the terms interior designer and interior decorator, yet very few actually know what this profession does as well as the

difference between the two. The most important thing to bear in mind is that both of these are professional titles, although many individuals with a creative eye are calling themselves by these titles. It is important to check out references prior to taking on either and also checking if they are part of a professional body such as the IID (The South African Institute of the Interior Design Professions). The professional advice and work you will have done by qualified professionals should end up saving you money rather than just being an elaborate unnecessary expense that quickly dates.

The biggest difference and most important difference between a decorator and a designer is that a qualified designer will be able to do structural alterations as well as additions to an existing property and submit the plans to council for approval. Although qualified designers can draw up plans up to 500m2 without an architect, many choose to work in conjunction and collaborate with architects.

Interior designers are experts at space planning and will be able to give you accurate renderings of your floor space and in many instances even give you 3D visuals. This is a sure way to get a good idea of what your space will look like before you have to part with your hard earned cash. Both Interior decorators as well as designers handle the decor aspects of a project which include the overall look and feel as well as furniture,

wall finishes, window treatments such as curtains and blinds as

well as lighting and art. A good designer or decorator will generally

custom make the majority of the furniture allowing you the flexibillity

of choosing, sizes, fabrics and finishes which are suited to your specific needs and tastes.

Further to this you are assured of a hand-crafted quality, locally produced product and not a cheap Chinese import as are found in many larger retailers. A decorator or designer should always give you various cost options and where possible offer recovery or refurbishment on pieces that are heirlooms or hold a special place in your heart. At the end of the day the home is where you live and needs to reflect your personality and not that of your designer or decorator.

When calling on the services of a decorator or designer, you will generally be charged an initial consultation fee, which will vary depending on the experience of the designer or decorator. This initial consultation fee should include a feedback document with pictures of homes, schemes and furniture, which should give you and idea of what direction your home or room will take. It is after this stage that you will decide whether you will be using their services or not. It is also a very good idea to discuss your budgets right upfront, so that the professional has a clear goal and this will avoid any nasty surprises during the process. ♥

Dave Nemeth is a qualified interior designer and one of SA’s leading trend forecasters. He consults to a variety of companies including some leading retailers and customised a host of prominent homes around the country including many celebrity residences. He is a monthly contributor to S.A. Homeowner and Objekt magazine.

Just off the R315 between Darling and Malmesbury a dusty road leads you through bucolic paddocks dotted with grazing sheep for five kilometres to Cloof and its

sister property, neighbouring Burgherspost.

The cellar was completed in 1998 and the first Cloof wines were released during the following year. The oldest vineyard still in use dates back to 1966, producing the Hermitage grapes used in the ever popular Inkspot Vin Noir blend. The characteristics of the wine are portrait in each label, expressing their unique personality’s individuality. Wines like The Very Sexy Shiraz, The Very Posh Pinotage and The Very Vivacious Viognier are just some of the personalities in the cellar.

Burgherspost produce the grapes used by Cloof, but also offers accommodation for those seeking real tranquility and serenity. Together these two farms contribute to the conservation of two important veld types: Swartland Granite Bulb Veld and Atlantis Sand Fynbos, both very endangered. The large game camp is stocked with locally indigenous animals including Eland, Bontebok, Red Hartebees, and Springbok. Animals which were already there include Grey Rhebuck, Steenbok and several smaller predators such as Caracal, Honey Badger and the Cape clawless otter.

This can be experienced either on foot following two different nature trails, which are carefully planned around the farm or a drive with the conservationist himself.

Cloof not only host the very popular Rocking The Daisies festival every year, attended by more than 17 000 people, but also offers a picturesque setting for more intimate events, weddings, art exhibitions and workshops.

Our passion for bold, well-defined flavours created in The Cloof Kitchen is expressed also in various food events at Cloof. Celebrating the best of country produce and simplicity in preparation, we see our wines as being their ideal complement. Afrikaans has a word, gesellig which best describes the happy mood that settles on a group when hospitality, good company, wine and food are brought together. ♥

The Marmalade Cat was the first eatery I visited in the Darling/Yzerfontein district when I first traveled here some years ago and I certainly was not

disappointed.

What first strikes you when you enter the Marmalade Cat is that it is not just any small town café. The walls are lined with an array of great gift ideas and gadgets for the home and kitchen! I remember buying a nifty (or should I say naughty) wine opener for a friend of mine to add to his collection of things for his home pub.

When you walk through the restaurant into The Barn at the back, there is literally a barn-full of unique and beautiful kitchen and home wares, ranging from hand made plates and platters to recovered wood picture frames and everything in between. I guarantee you that the items you find here you will not see anywhere else, certainly not at those large department home stores and price-wise, very reasonable.

If that is not enough, there is also The CatWalk, the adjoining boutique that has the most beautiful clothing, jewelry and accessories. Believe me it must be good, because when we go to The Marmalade Cat for coffee, I always have to go and pry my wife out of The CatWalk!

Now getting back to the main event, the start of it all: The Marmalade Cat! The menu is a great collection of bistro/café type foods, with a good influence of West Coast cuisine. For breakfast there is the usual fare of eggs and bacon, but my favourite item is the omelet. I have never had such a fluffy, light omelet, so filled with air that it literally melts on the tongue. Just divine!

I cannot say that I have tried everything off the lunch menu, but what I have had has been utterly delicious! My favourite is the fish cakes and I certainly have had them several times! The chicken pies are also something of a speciality here!

Then we come to Friday nights and the famous Marmalade Cat Pizza Nights! The Pizzas are exactly what one would expect from a good eatery with a crispy base and delicious, interesting toppings. If you are in the area over a Friday evening, I would definitely recommend Pizza Night. You are going to have to go to Naples, Italy, to find anything as good! But I must warn you that booking is essential, because the pizzas are so good that everyone in the district wants a piece of this pie (pizza-pie that is).

Overall the service is attentive, but not in your face. Sandy Collins, the owner, is usually on hand to welcome you, and to guide you through the delicious fare on the menu as well as taking you through the exciting merchandise both in The Barn and the trendy CatWalk. I must say that visiting The Marmalade Cat is a unique experience, but being situated in creative Darling, you almost expect it to be there!

And so Sandy Collins of The Marmalade Cat is one of my West Coast food heroes. Good, honest, freshly prepared food and some fashion and house wares thrown in for fun! If you are in this area, you have to pay a visit to this true icon of Darling. When you visit my blog atwww.idigdapig.com, you can read more about Sandy Collins of The Marmalade Cat and other West Coast Food Heroes.♥

Kei Apple or Dovyalis Caffra is a small to medium sized tree, native to Southern Africa. The ripe fruits are tasty, reminiscent of a small apple.

The flowers are inconspicuous, solitary or clustered, with no petals. The fruit is an edible bright yellow or orange berry, 2.5–4 cm diameter, with the skin and flesh of a uniform colour and containing several small seeds. Yellow fruits appear from January to May. Production is often copious, weighing down the branches during the summer. They are juicy, tasty and very acidic.

A traditional food plant for the Khoi and San, this little known fruit has potential to improve nutrition, boost food security, foster rural development and support sustainable landcare. Kei apples are often eaten fresh, or sprinkled with sugar to complement their natural acidity. Aside from being eaten fresh, the fruit can be made into jam, used in desserts, or pickled (their natural acidity means vinegar is not needed).

Although it is native to Africa, it has also been introduced to the Mediterranean, California, Florida and other regions with subtropical and warm temperate climates. In these

places it is most often grown as an ornamental plant, being popular as an impenetrable hedge. It is salt and drought-tolerant, so useful for coastal landscaping in dry regions.

Although a subtropical species, the Kei apple is able to survive temperatures as low as -6°C. Gardeners who want fruit require a female plant. A fertile female plant and fertile male plant is ideal. Kei apples are propagated by seed. Plants will bear about four years later. j

Cosmetics and make up dates back over 6000 years

and most civilizations and cultures practice some form

of facial or body art. Even the Bible refers to the use

of make up in the book of Esther. Looking groomed

without overdoing it, is an art form on its own.

My belief is for you to resemble yourself in the best form

possible. All of us have amazing qualities that makes us unique.

Make up should be used to enhance those qualities and make

them stand out. There are key must do elements that should

always be followed:

The eyebrows are key! It is essential to have them groomed by a professional in the form

of a brow tint and wax. If your therapist is qualified and skilled

to groom the brows this will get you as close to a mini facelift

without going under the knife. The brows form a integral part of

your face. If they are too light they will just disappear giving you

that dreaded terminally ill look. If they are too dark they can be

very harsh. They need to be neat and tidy and the right colour to

go with your hair colour.

A foundation of any kind is important. This does not mean you need to plaster your skin with something

covering your every freckle. The foundation (tinted moisturiser

and BB cream included) will even out your skin by covering

dreaded pigmentation spots and form a base for the rest of your

make up. Foundations should be tested on the jawline to ensure

a good match is made with regards to a shade. It also should be

applied over the eye area.

Blusher in a fresh tone to give life to skin. This will give depth and shading in areas needed. A bronzer can

also be used as a blusher.

Liner and mascara is your eyes best friend. The liner should be applied as close to the lash line as possible.

There are various different shades and one for every occasion.

Depending on your eye size liner can also be used on the bottom

lid. A good rule of thumb is the smaller the eye the less the liner.

Otherwise you will make your eye look even smaller. Mascara is

a must have for every woman. It opens the eye and enhances the

liner by giving bulk to the lashes.

Lastly a bit of lippie! This can be in the form of a gloss or lipstick or both!

These 5 steps form the basis of a day make up look and can be

jazzed up for the evening by turning up the intensity and adding

more. The best thing to do is to visit your beauty therapist or a

make up artist and book a make up lesson. They look at you with

fresh eyes and can give you good advice as to what shades suits

you best and what you can add to your make up bag. The value

of having your make up done professionally at least once in your

life is unmeasurable. So do yourself a favour and take the leap! j

Arthritis is one of the most common but most under-

diagnosed conditions in our pets, especially as they

age. The symptoms can be very subtle and animals

can seem more or less fine. In fact some of the most

common signs of arthritis, such as moving around less and

sleeping more, are just what you expect from an older pet

anyway and so it is easy to dismiss them.

What is arthritis?Arthritis occurs in the joints and develops when their smooth

cartilage surface becomes roughened and inflamed. It can strike

any joint in the body but the most commonly affected are the

hips, elbows and knees. The disease can strike at any age but it

mostly affects older animals.

What are the symptoms of arthritis? The symptoms of arthritis can be variable and can be very subtle

in the early stages. The most common signs include:

Arthritis

It is important to remember that the pain of arthritis is often

a low grade, chronic discomfort. So your pet may not show any

outward signs of being sore but may become grumpy or quieter

than usual. This is why it is important to always be vigilant for

changes in older pets, particularly in their personality.

How is arthritis diagnosed?Vets will usually consider arthritis as a likely diagnosis in an

animal which has the appropriate symptoms and presents with

joint abnormalities on clinical examination. In some cases x-rays

may be indicated. X-rays help in identifying exactly which joints

j Stiffness after exercising or rest, especially in the hind limbs.

j Less keen to climb the stairs or jump up. j Lameness which keeps recurring in one or more legs. j A reluctance to walk on slippery surfaces such as

laminate or tiled floors. j Swollen joints, most noticeable in the elbows/knee joints. j Less tolerant of handling and stroking.

are affected and how advanced the disease is. This is particularly

important for younger animals as some can respond well to

surgery on their joints, if it is performed in time. However, often

one of the best ways to confirm the presence of arthritic joints is

to monitor the response to a trial course of treatment.

How is arthritis treated? There are many different ways to treat arthritis and individual

animals respond differently to different treatment protocols.

Often vets will trial combinations of medications and

supplements to find the most effective treatment. The mainstay

of treatment for arthritis is medication. These are anti-

inflammatory pain relievers that reduce both the soreness and

the inflammation in the joint. They are generally very safe, can

be used over long periods and most pets only need small doses

to keep them comfortable. A blood test to check the status of

your pet’s kidneys and liver may be needed before longterm

medication is prescribed.

Neutraceuticals can also be very helpful, especially in mildly

affected animals. These are supplements which help to maintain

the joints in as healthy state as possible. Complementary

treatments which can be used to help are acupuncture and

hydrotherapy (swimming).

Arthritis is a painful and debilitating condition which can

significantly affect quality of life, so understanding the disease,

its symptoms and its treatments is a vital part of being a pet

owner. j

SWARTLANDwe care

So many of us have seen the sign on a wall somewhere. So many of us drive past the kennels weekly or even daily. The Swartland SPCA is situated

next to the cemetery in Darling. Have you ever stopped? Do you know what your SPCA looks like?

We often get the comment Oh no, I’ll cry my eyes out! or I’ll want to take them all home. These statements ring true to all animal lovers but if we all just drove past and said ag shame where would a organisation like the SPCA go for support?

The organisations main aim is to prevent cruelty against animals. That entails education in the community, mobile clinics and tending to cruelty cases. Another aspect we really would like to highlight is the adoption side. So many families or people living alone are looking for their next companion. Why not make adoption your first option? The act is twofold - not only are you giving a dog or cat a second chance, you will experience the gratitude of a animal finding its forever home.

Let’s say adoption is not for you but you would still like to help. Here are a few ways you can assist. The success and life expectancy of our SPCA is in our hands:

Pro’s for adopting from the SPCA:

j Your future family pet has been assessed by our trained staff for any behavioral issues, whether they are good with other dogs/cats and to check what home they would be most suited to.

j The small adoption fee includes deworming, vaccination, sterilisation and a home check. All inclusive!

j Some adult animals are already house trained so no puppy issues!

j There are designer dogs and pavement specials alike! So much variety to choose from.

The acquisition of a pet should never be governed exclusively by ones emotions but rather by an informed decision and carefully considered choice. Animals are for life and should never be given as surprise presents. j

After Hours Emergency Tel: 082 414 7153SMS PAW to 40131 to donate R20 to the Swartland SPCA

j Volunteer Donate your time by walking the dogs. You will lose a few kilos doing it and make a few new friends! Are you a cat lover? Our cattery is always open to come and interact with the kittens and adult cats.

j Share your Skill Good at marketing or fundraising? Are you an accountant, lawyer, animal behaviorist? Good at cleaning, painting or DIY? Any skills are welcome!

j Donate Money is always needed to fund projects like our mass sterilisation projects currently underway. Food, blankets and towels, toys and newspaper are always welcome.

j Be our Eyes and Ears Report animal abuse. Care enough to make a difference. Do not turn a blind eye.

j Bequests is a great way to leave a legacy behind. Your money or assets can mean the world to our organisation after your passing.

Darling Tourism have launched a new bird route, set to cater to bird lovers from all over. The route was officially launched by Dr Anton Odendal at a launch event held at Groote Post Wine Estate

in April. With its completely rural, peaceful and natural habitat, the small town located less than an hour out of Cape Town, boasts diverse vegetation which attracts a wide range of birdlife.

Birders can look forward to seeing a wide range of bird species from larks and pipits to lesser flamingoes and great white pelicans as well as a wide range of raptors in an area which stretches from the Strandveld of the Darling Hills Rd and Groote Post to the Renosterveld of Waylands and Oudepost wildflower reserves.

“The intention is to appeal to dedicated birders promoting the numerous locations within Darling including the nearby Ramsar site at the Langebaan Lagoon as well as appealing to casual birders who visit Darling to enjoy a show at the Perron or a visit to one of the excellent wine cellars or one of the many activities held throughout the year in Darling,” says Shaun McLaughlin of Darling Tourism.

An easy to use tab on the Darling website will enable the market to access 5 different sites with route maps detailing the places to visit and these maps as well as bird lists will be available to visitors year round at the Darling info office.

Future plans include the intention to train a dedicated guide from the Darling community to be able to offer guided tours as well as ensuring that visitors on the

THE Darling Birding Routepopular Darling Stagger are made aware of the wonderful bird life found within the area.

The beauty of the flowering bulbs and the immense variety of wildflowers in the area create a unique springtime experience. During summer months, large numbers of blue cranes may be seen in the wheat fields along the Darling / Malmesbury and Moorreesburg roads. The Tienie Versfeld Reserve and the !Khwa ttu San Culture & Education Centre enable the visitors to further enjoy the diversity of Darling and its prolific bird life. j
