URW++ has established itself in the graphic design industry by continually developing and marketing in-novative font and software products.Based on our technical font production skills, we are particularly successful in the area of corporate type development and production as well as a supplier of so-called world or global fonts for OEM customers. Additionally, we distinguish ourselves by a compre-hensive non-Latin font offering. Many of our popular Latin font designs are available in full WGL4 character set including Eastern European glyphs, Cyrillic as well as Greek! On top of that, we feature a fair variety of Japanese, Chinese and Korean fonts (CJK) as well as Indic Devanagari fonts. URW++ employs both Japa-nese and Chinese native speakers, and enjoys long-lasting partnerships in Tokyo and Shanghai. We are well equipped to meet the growing demand in the OEM and Corporate Company market for so-called Global Fonts resp. World Fonts.

In 2015 Global Graphics SE has acquired the entire issued share capital of font manufacturer URW++ De-sign & Development GmbH. URW++ has now scope to expand the business globally outside of Germany and the US and to give graphic designers and corpo-rates in wider geographies more choice of fonts.URW will continue to operate as a standalone busi-ness led by Peter Rosenfeld. It will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Global Graphics SE.

OpenType is a cross-platform font format developed by Adobe and Microsoft. URW++ offers its complete typeface library of Latin fonts in the OpenType for-mat online, covering character sets for Western and Eastern Europe. Fonts in the OpenType format work on both Mac OSX and Windows systems improving cross-platform document compatibility.

The two key advantages of OpenType are its cross-platform compatibility using only one font file for both Mac OSX and Windows and the possibility to have ex-tended character sets in one font (West, East, Cyrillic, Greek, but also small caps, swashes, ligatures, frac-tions and so on), and to optionally define special Lay-out Features to enhance the typographic capabilities.

ARABIC

Arabic (29 basic characters) was developed in the 7th century AD und stems directly from Aramaic, which in turn derived from Phoeni-cian.

THAI

Thai (64 basic characters) belongs to the family of Indic scripts which were developed from the early Brahmi script. It is written from left to right.

JAPANESE

Japanese Kanji were introduced in the 5th/6th century when Japan first came into contact with the Han dynasty in China. Kanji is a Japa-nese word and translates as: Chinese charac-ter.

CYRILLIC

The Cyrillic script containing 32 basic charac-ters is used in Russia and various countries of the former Soviet Union as well as some other countries and regions in Europe.

VIETNAMESE

Vietnamese has been written in Latin for about 60 years. Before, it was written in Chinese. This proves that monothetic languages with tonemes (6 for Thai) can very well be written in Latin.

HEBREW

Hebrew (22 basic characters) is modern Isra-el’s official script. The older Phoenician version of the Hebrew script is not used any more.

CHINESE

Chinese is the only script that does not have Semitic roots. It developed completely inde-pendently and is unique in its structure.

DEVANAGARI

Hindi, India’s official language, is written in Devanagari. In addition, there are many more scripts and languages which are equally com-plex in their design and setting rules.

KOREAN

Korean is written in Hangul syllables. Each of the 24 syllables consists of three parts (con-sonant, vowel, consonant). A complete Hangul font embraces more than 11000 glyphs (Uni-code standard).

GREEK

Greek (24 basic characters) is very similar to Latin. This is no surprise since Latin stems from Greek. One differentiates between monotonic and polytonic (ancient or classical Byzantine).

The Nimbus Global fonts are made all of a piece in terms of design and character sets. We have put spe-cial emphasis in the harmonization of the scripts relat-ing to both the proportions of the characters as well as the base lines adjustment between the scripts. As a re-sult, the various scripts (Latin and all non-Latin) as well as the different font families (Nimbus Sans and Nim-bus Roman) and styles (Light, Regular, Medium, Bold) can be used in combination with each other. This is especially important for multilingual documents and products. This harmonization of design makes our Global Fonts unique.

All non-Latin scripts are created and tested by native type designers from the respective countries or areas making sure that we reach the highest level in techni-cal and design quality of all the world’s scripts.

Print, website, E-reader or app - we optimize our fonts so that they look perfect in all media. Especially for corporate type and company logos, it is important that the representation on all media looks consistent.

Fonts for web embedding, apps and other ePub usage are produced in a different way from tradition-al desktop fonts. According to operation system and hardware, the fonts need further adjustments and op-timization to look as best as possible on screen.

We offer corresponding licenses for: Web Embedding, Web Server, Web App, and E-Book.

An exclusive corporate font family being part of the corporate identity is very significant for the distinctive image and appearance of a company. Custom-made, high quality typography creates a high level of recogni-tion for the internal and external communication. The development and production of exclusive corporate fonts is an important area of expertise at URW++.

Along with high-level design skills, it requires profound technical know-how to ensure that the fonts work smoothly in heterogeneous hard- and software condi-tions. We have been doing this for over 30 years and our customer reference list speaks for itself.

SIEMENS

Starting in 2000, we developed the new Siemens font family consisting of the trilogy Sans, Serif and Slab, followed in 2004 by the Professional version equipped with extended character sets (such as Expert Sets, Greek, Cyrillic). Starting in 2007, we gradually developed two exclusive global fonts for Siemens: Siemens Sans Global as regular and bold. To our best knowledge, this was the first exclusive, fully harmonized set of corporate global fonts ever made.

DEUTSCHE TELEKOM

In 1995, we developed the first version of Deutsche Telekom’s exclusive corporate font family Telekom Antiqua and Tele-Grotesk. Today, only TeleGrotesk is used which we gradually expanded in terms of character set (CE and Cyrillic was added) as well as screen optimization for both Windows and ePub.

DAIMLERThe Corporate ASE typeface trilogy was designed by Prof. Kurt Weidemann and URW from 1985 until 1990. This superb tril-ogy consisting of the Corporate Antiqua, Corporate Sans Serif, and Corporate Egyptian is a design program of classical quality, perfectly in tune with each other. Ever since its introduction, URW++ has expanded the family. Besides the new Corporate A Condensed, all fonts were enhanced with Greek and Cyrillic as well as expert sets. Additionally, we designed even Arabic for Corporate A and S on demand of Mercdes-Benz Arabia. Not enough: Corporate A, A Condensed and S are available as Glob-al Fonts with up to 65,000 characters. Corporate ASE is certainly one of our most comprehensive ultra-high quality font family.
