Editor(s) have their say:With all the freedom of the holidays blurring into the everyday grind of school (internal assessments, exams, tests, quizzes, assessments, and homework), I’m sure we’ve all been looking forward to ESP! Trips to Zanzibar, Usamabara, the deep blue sea, the crater highlands, biking around Dar and painting are all trips we’re looking forward to, and I’m sure we’re counting down to already (Only 312 hours to go, guys!) Our resolutions for this year’s image are to get out more content to you (and on time!) and we will be trying our hardest to cut down on exclamation marks (just not in this particular editorial)! This year we’re going green, so we’ll only be passing out 50 hard copies (which you can find in the library amongst other places) but don’t you fret- we’ve got online copies with links on our Facebook page, (Join us! The Image – IST’s student run magazine!) where you can read copies of all our issues!!

Crowd watches as local dancers perform on the beach in Dar es Salaam

Cover Photo by Rahul Srivatsa

Rahul Srivasta’s PhotosMy name is Rahul Srivatsa I am IB 1 student who loves photography. When I first when to Serengeti in 2007 I loved the place soo much that I begged my dad for a camera. He told me that he would buy me one for my birthday, I got a sony cybershot. A great camera, which I always carried around, utilised it to the fullest. My dad supported my hobby and it was the worlds greatest moment when he gave me his Nikon D90. Someday, I wish I can turn this hobby into a proffesion. My dream is to work for National Geographic.

HIV/AIDS!Awareness!Project

Have you thought how art could be a form of raising awareness?

Statistics state that “about 150,000 people die of AIDS every year” in Tanzania. The impact of HIV/

AIDS in a country like Tanzania is huge and we all are aware of this. Since I had met children with

HIV/AIDS I was perturbed by their stories and experiences of how people mistreated them. I had seen

many campaigns on the prevention of HIV/AIDS, but never a portrayal of the people affected. I was

committed to finding a solution and changing this perspective.

My passion for art and love for my African community made me want to take up the challenge of

starting an independent community project known as the HIV/AIDS Awareness Project (HAP). This

includes an HIV/AIDS campaign that promotes the coming together as a community, in the aim to

reduce HIV/AIDS in Dar-es-salaam. Through my knowledge of the design cycle I was able to

understand the current perception of HIV/AIDS. In this process I had interviewed locals, doctors and

NGO’s. I then created several illustrations of designs that I could potentially use for the campaign. In

order to find my perfect design I went out to survey the local audience on the streets of Dar-es-salaam.

With these evaluation results I was able to find my perfect illustration. I then recruited six motivated

individuals to paint the mural on a popular road, where potentially people would view it.

It is an everlasting experience to create a mural with a strong and positive message about such an

overwhelming health and social issue. It was a challenge to begin such a project but this experience has

motivated me to undertake other projects of significant impact. My team was very enthusiastic even

when they knew they had to spend two hours of every Wednesday painting under the sun. However, it

all paid off when we had people walking on the street come and tell us how amazing our work looks.

The melting ice lolly towards the end of every lesson just made the day perfect. Our hard work and

efforts in creating this mural makes each one of us very proud today. We hope to continue such

magnificent work in the future in order to make such a positive impact.

The BeastA Poem by Anonymous

They say beasts will hurt you, inflict you with so much pain, play with you a harmful game, where one's loss is another's gain. And I am afraid,Oh I am left trembling, and fearful for tomorrow's day.

But what scares me more,is that which pains my mind, not the scars of a wild beast, that will fade over time, but the ones imprinted on my heart, that supposed friends left behind on their depart.Actions speak louder than words,And a single soul doesn't stand a chanceagainst the movement of a disloyal herd.

So where do we find thosewho won't walk out halfway?Who will hold our headswhen we know not what to say?Who won't leave scars on our core, but rather memories to fall back on,when the rest of the world leaves us unsure? This world makes me wonder,if such a species even exists,or if we're all destined to drown in the thunder,of the actions that always speak louder?

ResolutionsI won’t cut my hair all this year1.

I want to get into UCLA4.

I want to go to five circuses10.

I want to take over the world before it ends.12

I want to cut down on soda.13.

The Mustard Yellow Couch

I sat by the mustard yellow couch on a hard wooden

stool, scared to sit down next to her. I was afraid I

would break her. There wasn’t a lot I could do for her

now, except keep her as comfortable as I could. Five

years, we had five years together, of laughing and

playing, and we never mentioned a word. I remember

the day she told me like I remember the exact time my

train shows up at the station. As I watch her sleeping

face, I drown in a memory, resting my hand lightly on

her ankle.

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !The phone is ringing. It’s four in the morning.!I hate

you, I’m thinking to the person outside the door, trying to send the message with my brainwaves. I stumble to the door to find Carrie standing at the door. I smile brightly, until she steps in, her face drawn, and damp…were those! tears?! I frown at her, “what happened?” I ask.“I… I… can’t talk about it. Can I stay with you?” of course I can’t refuse. This was Carrie. Carrie, my Carrie, even though she doesn’t know it yet. I put an arm around her shoulder, and sit her down on the mustard couch, hoping I can replace it soon. I give her a hug, and she stares at me blankly. It hurts that she can’t talk to me.“Water?” I ask. She nods, her face about to crumple once more. I get her water, and a dusty bottle of vodka, just to be on the safe side. I pour a little of both into a glass, I didn’t have juice. She could deal with it. I hand her the glass and sit with her for an hour maybe, just sitting and thinking. It passes by painfully. The silence presses down on my ears, I think I might scream. I couldn’t scream. A crack of light starts to pass through the window, and I know that it’s a new start of a day. I sigh, and I know I have to try making a new start. “I love you”. It comes out so easily because I’ve been saying it in my head every time I leave her. The difference doesn’t register in my brain. I’ve never been alone with Carrie, I knew she’d stay by my side as a friend even if she despised the idea. She bites her lip.She doesn’t answer. The hands of the clock move by slowly, marking ten…twenty…thirty minutes. “I can’t love you”. It was as simple as that, apparently.“Yeah, I know.”“No, no you don’t. I’m…” she sighed, “It’ll be easier if I just tell you now I guess. I’m.., dying” a tear rolls down her face.!!My face doesn’t move. I don’t believe her. I don’t!want!to believe her. “Carrie?”“Yeah, I know.”“I’ll still love you.” I say what I would want to hear. I don’t think it’s going to happen, but what do I know? All I know is

that she’s the girl I’m in love with. I drag my eyes across the wall, and look at her again, my eyes catching hers. I lean down and kiss her, once. Her eyes open in shock, and her mouth opens.“Why are you surprised? I told you I love you.”“I have four years. Four and a half at the most. I didn’t know you meant it like that.”I close my eyes.I blink five years later, my eyes adjusting to the dying

light in the room. The dusty television set in the corner

doesn’t work. I hate that. Carries loved,! loves,!to watch

movies. I get up, pacing. I hate this. I hate that she

doesn’t get what she needs even as she’s leaving. I let

out a frustrated growl. I stomp my feet a little. Stupid

world. Stupid cancer. Stupid! television.! I lift it over my

head, and let it go crashing down. The screen splinters

into a million pieces. It doesn’t matter what happens to

me now that Carrie’s leaving. “Work, for the love of

Carrie,” her name comes out a whisper. I turn, and see

Carrie, her eyes open, staring at me.

“Carrie?” she doesn’t reply. She!doesn’t reply!!I stride to her, shake her shoulder. Her eyes are!open!!She

must be unconscious. It had to be something simple. A

simple explanation. There was nothing big, she had

cancer, she couldn’t just pass out. She still had a while

to go. That four and half years had stretched to five, it

could stretch a little more. I rip my phone out of my

pocket, tearing the already frayed denim, and call 911.

Within minutes, the house seems to be filled flashing

lights and sounds. I rush to the door, and seeing a

paramedic running out, my face is suddenly wet. I

bring her to Carrie, I show her Carrie’s beautiful face,

and her eyes still wide open. Ten minutes wasn’t a long

time. It wasn’t. They could still save her.

They carry her out, and I wish I was like her, then I

wouldn’t feel this feeling of dread that was creeping up.

I wouldn’t feel like there was a guillotine about to be

smashed down over my neck, beheading me. I wouldn’t

hear this white-hot noise coming from everywhere. The

screaming starts to turn red, blue, red, blue, red, blue…

I hear a noise and look up, “Carrie?”

“She had a heart attack. Must’ve been shock.”

I finally let the guillotine fall.!

have more that 30 different cuisines within our country, all considerably different from each other. We have over 15 types of folk dances unique to India. Religion is also practiced differently from state to state. Architecture in every historical city is different as we had over 100 maharajas (kings) ruling India before the British India.

W h a t ’s y o u r o p i n i o n o n Gandhi?

I think Gandhi is one of the greatest people I know, a great l e a d e r, a g r e a t t e a c h e r, a revolutionary and most a good person. He believed in non-violence and won us independence through this idea. With his influence over the country and spreading the idea of non-violence, he prevented millions of casualties.

Do you plan to go study in India? Why or why not?

India is one of my choices, but not my priority. This is not because of the lack of quality colleges in India, but due to my person desire to

travel the world. Also, it is very h a r d t o g e t i n t o t h e b e s t universities in India like the Indian Institute of Management, Indian Ins t i tu te o f sc ience, Indian Institute of technology and many m o r e . We h av e v e r y g o o d m a n a g e m e n t , e n g i n e e r i n g institutes and some of the best medical programs in the world.

Tell me a really what are some of the different Indian traditions and which one is your favorite?

There are several traditions that i e n j oy. Two o f my f avo r i t e traditions or festivals are Holi (festival of colors) and diwali (festival of lights). During the fest ival of Holi , mil l ions of Indians wear new white clothes and play with color and water. Well it’s like the whole country turns into one frenzy paintball field.!Diwali is another fun festival and a great time to be in India. Few nights of endless display of firecrackers and the evening times when everyone prays, all the

IndiaIn this issue’s article I wanted to focus on a common theme, the country India. India is a really interesting country to this writer who has always wanted to visit it. It is the seventh largest country in the world and contains so much history. While writing this article, I was able to learn so much about this country and its people.! ! I decided to interview my friend Rahul to talk about his country, culture, and his opinion on it.

How long have you live in India?

I have lived in India for 4 years but go there every summer for 1-2 months

What is it that makes India so diverse from other countries?

India is a vast country, it is the 7th largest country in the world. India has 28 states From personal experiences every state is different from the other in its own way. India has 1 national language, 18 official state languages and over 1,000 unofficial languages. We also

houses are lit up with Diyas (lamps). It is one of the most beautiful sights and definitely worth seeing once in a lifetime.

Mahandas Gandi is one of the most admirable people in this world, Mohandas Gandhi has made his mark on history by showing the world how violence isn’t always the best way to solve your problems, and how non-violent means can have a m o r e l a s t i n g a n d b e n e f i c i a l outcome. His efforts helped gain India’s independence from British rule in 1947.!

Gandhi was, by profession, a lawyer and went to South Africa after a few years of practicing as a lawyer. There the situation really opened his eyes to the reality that the country was facing. Issues such as racial discrimination against him and the natives really influenced his ideas about the framework of society. After returning to India he played a huge role in the nationalist movement in India, headlining many peaceful protests such as hunger strikes and the March of Salt. The March of Salt was probably one of Gandhi’s most important protests since he was able to defy British laws without violence by arriving at the coasts of India to produce salt which was forbidden to be done by the locals.! ! His dedicat ion and strong morals influenced and deeply affected the history of India. I believe each one of us has the power to create c h a n g e , b u t i t t a k e s a n immeasurable amount of strength like the one Gandhi possessed to do so without raising a single weapon. Hopefully this can remind us that there is always a better way, other than violence to get around our problems.!!

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the

strong.”-Mohandas Gandhi

" Last Friday night was an epic night for fans

of MMA (mixed martial arts). For those who don’t

know about this sport, it is basically this fighting

sport where fighters are allowed to

use different techniques and styles

of fighting to go against their

opponents. The fight continues

even if it goes to the ground.

" So this UFC fight night was

hosted for the first time by the

networks FX (for the main fights)

and Fuel TV (which hosted the

prelims). The most memorable

moments of the prelims was the

official retirement of the veteran

Jorge Rivera (fighting record: 19-9)

who won via Knock out against

Eric Shafer (14-7). Starting with

the main event fights we had the

amazing heavyweight fight of the entertaining Pat

Barry (7-4) against Christian Morecraft (7-3). At

first it seemed that Pat Barry was about to loose

against Morecraft via submission when he was

thrown to the ground, but Pat was able to

eventually stand up and start

throwing devastating kicks and

punches at his opponent. This

eventually finished Morecraft and

gave Pat Barry the ‘Fight of the

Night Award’. On the other hand

the main event was a fight between

2 of the top lightweights in the

world, Melvin Guillard (46-11) vs.

Jim Miller (21-3). This was also a

short fight that didn’t go beyond

the first round when Jim Miller was able to get

Guillards back and apply a choke while still

standing. Guillard who was no longer able to stand

up, went down and was tapped out. Jim Miller won

the submission of the night award and got a step

closer to get a title shot against the current

champion of the lightweight

division, Frankie Edgar.

" Other News: The co-

main event of this week’s

UFC event which is being

transmitted for the second

t ime on FOX ha s been

changed. Mark Muños got

injured and will not be able to

g o a g a i n s t t h e m o s t

controversial fighter in the

world Chael Sonnen (27-11).

This fight was supposed to

create an opportunity for one

of the fighters to go up against

Anderson Silva, the best

fighter in the world and current middleweight

champion. Substituting Mark Muños will be the

british fighter Michael Bisping (23-3).

" On the main event of that same night

Rashad Evan will fight Phil Davis for an

“opportunity” to go against

t h e l i g h t h e a v y w e i g h t

champions Jon “Bone” Jones.

An opportunity that was

promised to the legendary

Dan Henderson a couple of

months ago after he won one

of the most memorable fights

in UFC history against the

Brazilian, Mauricio Rua. So

who the next contender for

the light heavyweight championship will be is still

unclear. The president of the UFC, Dana White,

still hasn’t given any comments on the subject.

" The Manila Envelopes have returned, and it

can only mean one thing… Report cards. The

greatest fear to anyone who moderately cares about

there grades. The closer it is till we receive our

reports the more agitated people get. The straight

sevens student dreads it because what if, gasp!,

what if they are no longer a straight sevens

student? The sixes and fives average group looks on

at the straight sevens student in disgust, what’s one

six if the rest are sevens? They don’t care for their

grade as long as there is no 4 involved. You can see

the fear in there eyes and you can almost hear

them thinking ‘Please no four!’. There are also

those who don’t care for there grades, think it’s

good of them to show up. They arrive, ten minutes

late to collect their reports. Laughing at the now

satisfied students who have received an identical

report to the one they received last semester. The

‘don’t care’ group casually stroll out of the class

room tossing there Manila Envelopes, still sealed,

into the bin.

The Manila Envelopes

" At my own house the bathroom door doesn't

have a lock and we abide by the rule 'Knock First'

and, if all else fails, and somebody walks in on you

while you’re on the pot, just yell really loudly and

more often and then not, you will have the

bathroom to yourself.

# However, I'm never sure what to do when I

find myself in someone else's bathroom with a lock

on the door. Obviously it is intended that I make use

of the lock or else risk the chance of being walked

in on.

# But what if the lock gets jammed and I end

up getting stuck in the bathroom? Then what? Do I

wait till somebody decides to come looking for me?

Or scream for help? Which would probably will get

me out sooner. But what if, worse case senario, I

screech for help then, when it seems I'm finally free,

my prince charming, white horse and all, ends up

being the really really cute guy I've been working up

the guts to talk to all evening?

So, do I lock, and risk the embarrassment of getting

stuck and the whole parade that comes with it, or do

I not lock and risk getting walked in on?

To Lock, or not to Lock?

CupidReal men, psht sure! You call

‘players’ real men. I beg to differ.

Real men, if men can even be

called that, are the ones who only

care for their one and only!

Players are actually the men who

have relationship-phobia: men

who feel insecure; that if they’re

not up to the mark, they’ll just be

dumped! Just for the sake of

feeling in power, they want to be

the ones who change their

girlfriends like they would clothes.

That’s it: they’re all insecure!

Wow! You sure misunderstand life!

Relationships are the angelic

bonds between a guy and a girl

whose match has been made in

heaven, the perfect couple that

will last an eternity; at least until

death do them part.! PDA, which

you regard with disgust, aren’t

really meant for your eyes! What

you call PDA are actually just the

couple doing things their way,

because when one are in love, they

don’t care about what goes on

around them.

Hmm, about the fake mistletoe,

that’s just the trademark for

desperate couples, or should I say

the more fantasy oriented ones. I

think, in the end, it’s ultimately

the guy’s decision, because if they

are as “powerful” as you claim

them to be, they should be able to

say NO! So, that trip to the

cinemas to watch “Breaking

Dawn”, or the new pink t-shirt,

might be to please her, but too

some extent, it was the guy’s

decision, even if not completely,

because I must admit that girls can

be really pushy!

You may be amused by corny

couples, and feel glad that you

weren’t the guy in that ‘extremely

nauseous and gender revoking

relationships’, but a few 50 years

down the line will open your eyes!

No one will fall for your looks

anymore, and then, you’ll be an

old and ugly loner! Then you’ll

spend the rest of your days hoping

that you were actually that guy in

love who’s been happily married

for a few years now, and has three

kids to call his own, and a home,

where his wife will welcome him

home after a day of hard work

with a kiss. While all this goes on

somewhere, in a happy household,

you’ll sit on your porch, rocking

away on your creaky rocking chair,

all by yourself!

Hope this New Year brings you

luck, and may you find your

special someone soon!
