Music

Music is an integral part of the student experience at Loreto. The department itself houses state-of-the-art facilities, including three recording studios and a 188 capacity performance theatre. In addition to the music subjects, the department offers all students a chance to experience music in a broader context.

An established programme of music activities combined with a busy schedule of concerts and performance opportunities appeal to a range of interests; from DJs and producers to orchestral musicians and composers.

In addition, the department has strong links to other music and educational institutions, runs its own record label, stages an annual musical production and runs a concerto competition and a composition competition every year.

ONE-TO-ONE LESSONSAll students who study A-level Music/Music Technology and contribute significantly to extra-curricular music are entitled to 30 minutes of one-to-one instrument/voice lessons a week, paid for by Loreto. PLUS All A-level Music students get weekly supplementary composition lessons with the college’s resident composer. Loreto has a fantastic relationship with its local community and all students perform numerous times during year at local primary schools and care homes.

A number of our students are members of the Hallé Youth Orchestra and Hallé Youth Choir who take part in a number of concerts and workshops throughout the year, and some of our students enjoy going to Junior RNCM too. Students are encouraged to take up places on music summer schools, and Loreto students appear frequently on the Purcell School and the Lake District Summer Music courses. Loreto hosts the Cambridge University Music Hub, designed for those looking to apply to study Music at competitive universities.

PROGRESSIONAt Loreto, we are very proud of all our students’ musical accomplishments and whilst it is not possible to mention them all individually, reference should be made to the following who have recently gained places to start in 2016 at the following institutions:

• Jay Carroll - RNCM, BMus (Hons) in Music

• Sandra Hardial - RNCM, BMus (Hons) in Music

• Sarah Spencer - New College, Oxford, BMus (Hons) in Music

• Maisie Palmer - University of Edinburgh, MMus (Hons) in Music

• Stella Bracegirdle - University of Manchester, BMus (Hons) in Music

• Megan Auld - University of Cardiff, BMus (Hons) in Music

EXAM BOARD: EDUQASEntry Requirements: General College entry requirements, including A*-C in Music GCSE and/or grades in chosen instrument, and audition at enrolment. Grade 5 Theory of Music is highly desirable.

A-levelMusicDuring our study of the A-level syllabus, we believe in practical-led analysis of set works and areas of study, so much of our time in class is spent with instruments in hand or singing. We take a multi-disciplined approach to composition, where students are given a variety of group and individual composition tasks, using both improvisatory methods and more formal notation-based models.

Music CompetitionsThe Music Department runs two competitions, the St Cecilia Concerto Competition, for virtuosic instrumentalists, and the Loreto Composition Prize, for aspiring composers.

A-level Music TechnologyThe A-level Music Technology course can lead to specialism at a music college or university. It also prepares students to access industry roles, such as working in live venues, radio, television and theatre. In addition, these courses are an excellent foundation for entry into higher education for a variety of subjects.

Loreto’s exciting Music Technology course is designed for those students who have an interest in careers centred around live music, studio production, games design, acoustic engineering, radio, television, and theatre. Students are encouraged to get involved in cross college enterprises such as drama and dance productions, and in particular the college record label – E&K Records.

Manchester has a rich heritage of musical and technical innovation and Loreto’s Music Technology course seeks to take full advantage of the opportunities available. One of our many links is with the School of Sound Recording (SSR), a specialist university delivering a wide range of music and media-based courses whose alumni have progressed directly into a wide range of industry roles. Our students visited the school to investigate its recording and post-production studios. Blueprint Studios, home of world famous band Elbow, was another destination, where AS students had the chance to examine the revered Neve mixing console, and to talk to sound engineers who related their experiences of working

with such mega-stars as Snoop Dogg, Rhianna and Lady Gaga.

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS Each Music Technology student receives 30 minutes of weekly, one-to-one instrumental lessons on their instrument of choice (includes voice), by our team of specialist tutors.

EXAM BOARD: EDEXCEL Entry Requirements: Students who take the AS course are expected to have good music reading ability as well as proficiency at an instrument of choice. They may have studied the BTEC or GCSE Music (but these are not pre-requisites) with keyboard skills being highly desirable. You will be required to complete a short music theory exam (grades 1-3) at enrolment.

This year, students progressing onto study Music Technology at university include:

• Kacper Kurczynski - Electronic Music & DJ Practice at SSR Manchester

• Kyle Gabbidon - Creative Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield.

• Dylan Day - Creative Music Technology at the University of Salford.

LORETO COMPOSITION PRIZEFor this year’s Composition Prize students were given the task of setting Sara Teasdale’s 1911 poem ‘Christmas Carol’ for unaccompanied 4-part choir, to be sung by the Loreto Chamber Choir. The winning composer this year was Sarah Spencer, whose composition echoes the simplicity and humility of the text in a very poignant fashion. The Loreto Chamber Choir gave the world premiere of the piece at the Hidden Gem Church and there were further performances at Manchester Town Hall and the Church of the Holy Name. As well as the piece receiving some very high profile performances, Sarah will receive £100 in prize money. Whilst at college Sarah was also part of a collaborative project for International Women’s Day, with renowned contemporary composer Anna Meredith, and was part of an ensemble performing the piece live from the Southbank Centre on BBC Radio 3. Sarah is now studying Music at New College, Oxford.

ST CECILIA CONCERTO COMPETITIONThe St Cecilia Concerto Competition, dedicated to the Patroness Saint of Music, was won by violinist Megan Auld. Megan played ‘Summer’ from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi in the final. Guest judge for the evening, Jonathan Fisher, staff pianist at the RNCM and Pianist-in-Residence at the University of Huddersfield, praised Megan’s ‘sense of drama and expression between the contrasting sections.’ As well as receiving a prize of £100. Megan went on to rehearse the work with the Loreto String orchestra throughout the Lent term. This culminated in Loreto’s Easter Concert at Hallé St Peters, where her remarkable performance brought the house down. Megan is now studying Music at Cardiff University.

Cambridge UniversityMusic Hubs Programme

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY MUSIC HUBS PROGRAMMELoreto College is one of the two UK centres for the Cambridge University Music Hubs Programme. Talented students from across the North West attend Loreto for the series of bespoke workshops and seminars that are written by the University’s academics to help prepare students for undergraduate study. The programme culminates with a residential course at Cambridge where students get a taste of what it’s like to attend one of the world’s most prestigious education establishments.

Five high-achieving music students from Loreto’s AS Music course recently took part in Cambridge University’s Music Hubs residential visit to Cambridge. Eighteen students from

nine different institutions stayed at Murray Edwards College and took part in a bespoke programme of workshops and seminars at the Music Faculty on West Road.

On the first day, following a tour of Cambridge with the project co-ordinator, Joe Shaw, the students had their first session, studying Early Renaissance polyphony with Dr Edward Wickham. This was followed by a session on Performance Authenticity given by Maggie Faultless (Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment) where students performed parts of an early classical symphony using period instruments, such as the harpsichord and natural trumpet. The students had a great time and the experience really broadened their knowledge in terms of music but also in terms of Higher Education.

LORETO.AC.UK/TUDENT-LIFE/LORETO-EXTRA

E + K RECORDSLoreto College’s record label, established in 2012, releases an annual compilation of student compositions and productions created outside of the course. 2016 saw the release of EK05, the largest compilation yet at 14 tracks. EK05 showcased the diverse musical talents within the college including Loreto Talent Show finalist Ellen Baker and local indie band The Claremonts. The release was a huge success, with over 1000 streams in a matter of days. All tracks were created, mixed, and mastered by the students themselves, giving them the opportunity to develop a diverse range of skills desired within the industry.
