Our purpose is to be proactive and intervene to prevent school withdrawal, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, substance abuse and welfare dependency in a safe and nurturing environment. The 2008 Florida StatutesK-20 EDUCATION CODE STUDENT AND PARENTAL RIGHTS AND EDUCATIONAL CHOICES

1002.311  Single-gender programs authorized.–

(1)  Subject to subsection (2) and in accordance with 34 C.F.R. s. 106.34, a district school board may establish and maintain a nonvocational class, extracurricular activity, or school for elementary, middle, or high school students in which enrollment is limited to a single gender if the school district also makes available a substantially equal: (a)  Single-gender class, extracurricular activity, or school to students of the other gender; and (b)  Coeducational class, extracurricular activity, or school to all students. (2)  A district school board that establishes a single-gender class, extracurricular activity, or school: (a)  May not require participation by any student. The district school board must ensure that participation in the single-gender class, extracurricular activity, or school is voluntary. (b)  Must evaluate each single-gender class, extracurricular activity, or school in the school district at least once every 2 years in order to ensure that it is in compliance with this section and 34 C.F.R. s. 106.34. Successful Outcomes 2008/2009….first year of operation

• Service provided to approximately 100 middle and high students • 6 seniors graduated with 5 of those 6 seniors receiving 2-year scholarships to FKCC. (2 in the Upper Keys and 3 in the Lower Keys, qualified MK students opted to go directly to a 4-year college or had other scholarship opportunities)

• Two KCA students qualified for the Take Stock In Children Scholarship Program and will begin their mentoring program fall 2009

• Community supporters recorded over 300 volunteer program participation hours for the year in the form of guest speakers, wellness programs and direct services to students.

Grants from public and private sources to fund the KCA Counseling Component exceeded $100,000.

90% of all students enrolled in the program for 3 months or longer made significant academic progress

95% of all students enrolled significantly reduced the risk factors that initially brought them to the Keys Center Academy program

95% of participating students increased their protective factors

Among the center and two outreach programs, only one new teenage pregnancy was reported
