Dedichiamo questo numero speciale a due eventi che si so-no svolti a Carrara, in città e nel-le cave, e che hanno avuto un grande successo.Volevamo riportare il marmo ed il prodotto nella sua città sim-bolo e nei luoghi in cui viene estratto dalla montagna.Con Welcome Angels, On the way to CarraraMarmotec 2010, ab-biamo dato vita, per ben quat-tro serate, a un evento che ha valorizzato il luogo dell'estrazione ed ha riportato in cava architetti e imprenditori che, assieme ad oltre 3.000

Carrara identifies itself with marble and enthusiastically found its bearings again in two events that had been organised to continue moving towards CarraraMarmotec 2010: complimentary events of course but powerfully distinctive too, capable of keeping the attention of the world of architects and designers focussed on marble and CarraraMarmotec.All began in the magnificent setting of the Ex Convent of Saint Francis (Museo delle arti plastiche) with the opening of Stone Style, Territorio & Design, the event organised by ICE (Italian Trade Commission) and the Tuscany Region, along with Internazionale Marmi e Macchine and CarraraFiere, thus proving that modern promotional campaigns can be targeted to those professionals who are essential for understanding and using marble: architects and designers.

“Stone Style is proof that we have given strength and motivation back to a process that must bring professionals to have a more straightforward, deeper relationship, a constant exchange, with the marble universe, which includes quarries, saw mills, workshops with great professional and manual skills. It is not just a showcase of top-rank designer items by the most famous contemporary designers – said Giorgio Bianchini, president of IMM – CarraraFiere during the opening –, it is a clear message too: from the quarries to the saw mills, from the companies to the professionals, Carrara and its region are a great breeding ground where expertise and skills, tradition and the culture of the matter, blend into one.” It is a “unique cultural milieu” that offers the charm of the quarries and technology, always under control, never overwhelming. It is the quarries that take centre stage, the place where marble is quarried and where people work hard, the surroundings that create unique atmospheres, more than anywhere else, and where it's nice to go back and rebuild a dialogue between the men, the environment and the product coming from the quarries.

Per quattro sere, dal 10 al 13 giugno, il bacino di Gioia ha fatto da “location” e CarraraFiere ha compiuto un grande sforzo organizzativo che si è avvalso della disponi-bilità e della grande collaborazione delle aziende che lavorano quelle cave.Gli invitati erano accolti sulla strada che por-ta a Colonnata e da li, su comodi fuoristrada, accompagnati sul piazzale della cava dove lo scenario non aveva bisogno di commenti: sculture e componenti, pezzi di design e componenti seriali segnavano la strada ver-so il grande piazzale dove si completava la suggestione dei pezzi lavorati che tornano a dialogare con il luogo che li ha generati.

Emphasis and added value to the dialogue between men, marble and the quarry, this is the aim pursued by CarraraFiere through “Welcome Angels”. The event has been conceived to give new strength, enthusiasm and deep motivations to the relation between matter and design, between the emotions arousing from the quarries and those of the quarry-workers who experience them every day. And again, the fascination of the process which transforms the material into a finished product, a process made of culture, tradition and above all know-how, the distinguishing features of the Apuan territory and its productive tissue. Welcome Angels had an intriguing goal: to take Carrara and the architects to the quarries which have been, for 4 nights, the natural stage of a unique event able to melt lights, shadows and evocative sounds with the natural stone of the surrounding benches and the slopes, climbing up to the mountain, dai ly scoured by the quarrymen.

From 10th to 13th of June, the location of “Welcome Angels” was one of the quarry of the Gioia marble basin and CarraraFiere made great efforts to arrange perfectly all the phases of the event thanks also to the companies which usually work that quarry.All the visitors were welcomed and picked up on the main road leading to Colonnata village to be taken, on comfortable and sa-fe off-road vehicles, to the larger square of the quarry. From there they could enjoy a breathtaking scenario which did not need any comments: design items, sculptures and industrial objects dotted the way to the big natural stage which topped up the atmosphere of these worked pieces con-nected again to the place where they were born.

Il successo e l'indice di gradimento sono stati straordinari con una presenza al di sopra di ogni aspettativa di architetti,

imprenditori autorità, e tanti carraresi che hanno voluto assaporare il fascino della cava “by night” assistendo ad uno

spettacolo nello spettacolo, quello messo in scena da Uovoquadrato che è stato narratore e protagonista con

immagini e suoni, luci, voci, danze di corpi e mezzi meccanici, in questa sorta di festa del marmo.

La gente è tornata in cava con piacere e curiosità. In tanti se ne sono allontanati a fatica, portando nella memoria le suggestioni

di un grande spettacolo. È stata una full immersion nelle sensazioni che nascono solo

nelle cave che si sono trasformate in luoghi in grado di accogliere non solo gli “angeli” del lavoro e della fatica ma anche il prodotto dell'ingegno, della fantasia, della ricerca

formale rappresentata dai pezzi esposti.Una bella tappa di avvicinamento a CarraraMarmotec 2010,

realizzata “nel” e “attraverso” il marmo, materiale di eccellenza e simbolo di un primato culturale, tecnico e commerciale tutto

italiano.Nell'anno in cui non si è svolta CarraraMarmotec si è voluto

guardare alla 30° edizione lasciando un segno forte come quello di Welcome Angels che, come dicono efficacemente le

immagini, è stato un open happening, un evento aperto a tutti affinché tutti fossero in grado di scoprire in una cornice di

prestigio e di grande impatto scenografico il fascino e l'imponenza delle cave e un riconoscimento forte alle persone

che ci lavorano.Uovoquadrato ha assolto magistralmente il compito di narratore

d'eccellenza: attraverso immagini e suoni, luci, voci, danze di corpi sopra ed accanto ai pezzi esposti in cava e fra i mezzi

meccanici, in una festa del marmo dove in tantissimi sono tornati in cava ed hanno riannodato questo filo che lega la cava

alla città e l'uomo al marmo.

The event was a huge success and met everyone’s approval, with an unexpected number of architects, businessmen,

authorities and lots of locals flocking in to enjoy the charm of the quarry by night, as a show within the show, the one staged by

Uovoquadrato who was the entertainer and the star, with pictures and sounds, lights, voices, bodies and machinery

dancing around in this sort of feast of marble.People were happy and curious to go back to the quarry. For

many, it was a wrench to have to go away, bringing in their memory the suggestion of a great show.

It was a sort of a dive into feelings that can only be born of the quarries, which were transformed into places capable of hosting

not only the ‘angels’ of work and fatigue but also the result of genius, creativity, formal research that was embodied by the

pieces on display.A great step along the way in the run-up to CarraraMarmotec

2010, developing ‘in’ and ‘through’ marble, the very best material and a symbol of a quintessentially Italian cultural,

technical and commercial leadership.In the year CarraraMarmotec has not taken place, the 30th fair has been heralded by such a powerful message as Welcome

Angels, which, as the pictures tell very clearly, was an open happening, so that everyone could discover, in a prestigious setting of great scenic effect, the charm and the impressive

proportions of the quarries and a great tribute to the people who work there.
