SPECIAL PRAYERS ORACIONES ESPECIALES

The mission of the Church.

Each evangelist, in his own way, shows, as a fundamental part of the mes-sage of Jesus, the universal mission of the Church. Saint John in the Gospel of to-day resorts, following his own style, to the symbols. The sea as an image of the world, of all men, was common in the time of Jesus and the evangelist; It was equally common, at least between Greeks and Romans, the image of the ship, e.g. the state ship. The early Christians, based on some texts of the New Testament (Lk 5,3, Mt 8, 23, Mk 1,17, Jn 21, 1-14), spoke about the nave of the Church. There is another symbol that is exclusive to Juan. I refer to the number of fish collected: 153. It is known that, in the contemporary culture of Jesus, the numerical symbol had great value and was used not infrequently. One hundred fifty-three indicates fullness and totality. It is usually explained in two ways: 1 + 3 + 5 is equal to 9, that being a multiple of 3 emphasizes the fullness to the highest degree. Another way to explain the full and total value of this number is as follows: the multiple of 12 is 144; if we add 144 to 9 we get 153. It is a way to accentuate the totality even mo-re. In short, the mission of the Church, in the sea of the world, is none other than to be fishermen of all men without exception and take them to the safe harbor of faith and eternity. To this image of the ship and the fishing, there follows another one: that of the shepherd and the sheep. Jesus Christ, Good Shepherd, commends Peter: “Feed my sheep.” Ezekiel had spoken of God as the Shepherd of Israel; Je-sus now turns to the same image to speak of himself as Pastor of the Church, and gives Peter his same mission. Good Shepherd is the one who cares, loves, protects, feeds his sheep, and defends them from the wolves until he gives his life for them. The mission of Peter and the pastors in the Church is to make all the sheep reach the salvation of God.

Two ways to carry out the mission.

In the Acts of the Apostles (first reading) the mission is carried out through preaching. The apostles have preached Jesus Christ, above all the great mystery of his death and resurrection, and the nets are beginning to fill with fish. The effecti-veness of the preaching is such that the Jewish authorities are frightened and put the apostles in jail. “But Peter and the apostles answered: We must obey God rat-her than men.” Who has received the same mission as Jesus Christ, can he renoun-ce it? Can you match it to any other mission in life? It seems impossible to the apostles, and they are not afraid to pay any price for carrying out their mis-sion. The second way to carry out the mission is worship, particularly the attitude of worship towards Jesus Christ, the slain Lamb. “Worthy is the slain Lamb, to receive power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and praise” (second reading). For the mission of the apostles to be fully realized, preaching must lead to worship. To know that Christ has died and risen for us, without ever worshiping him as our God and Lord, is to leave the mission incomplete. Separating these two realities or neglecting one of them excessively would be equivalent to a kind of apostolic and pastoral monophysitism.

La misión de la Iglesia.

Cada evangelista, a su manera, muestra, como parte fundamental del mensaje de Jesús, la misión universal de la Iglesia. San Juan en el Evangelio de hoy recurre, siguiendo su estilo propio, a los símbolos. El mar como imagen del mundo, del conjunto de los hombres, era común en tiempos de Jesús y del evange-lista; era igualmente común, al menos entre griegos y romanos, la imagen de la nave, v.g. la nave del estado. Los primeros cristianos, basándose en algunos textos del Nuevo Testamento (Lc 5,3; Mt 8, 23; Mc 1,17; Jn 21, 1-14), hablaron de la nave de la Iglesia. Hay otro símbolo que es exclusivo de Juan. Me refiero al número de peces recogidos: 153. Es conocido que, en la cultura contemporánea de Jesús, el símbolo numérico tenía un gran valor y era usado con no poca frecuencia. Ciento cincuenta y tres indica plenitud y totalidad. Se suele explicar de dos modos: 1 + 3 + 5 es igual a 9, que siendo múltiplo de 3 subraya la plenitud en grado sumo. Otro modo de explicar el valor pleno y total de este número es el siguiente: el múltiplo de 12 es 144; si a 144 sumamos 9 obtenemos 153. Es una manera de acentuar toda-vía más la totalidad. En resumen, la misión de la Iglesia, en el mar del mundo, no es otra sino la de ser pescadores de todos los hombres sin excepción y llevarlos al puerto seguro de la fe y de la eternidad. A esta imagen de la nave y de la pesca, si-gue a continuación otra: la del pastor y las ovejas. Jesucristo, Buen Pastor, enco-mienda a Pedro: “Apacienta mis ovejas”. Ezequiel había hablado del Dios como Pastor de Israel; ahora Jesús recurre a la misma imagen para hablar de sí mismo como Pastor de la Iglesia, y da a Pedro su misma misión. Buen Pastor es aquél que cuida, ama, protege, apacienta a sus ovejas, y las defiende de los lobos hasta dar la vida por ellas. La misión de Pedro y de los pastores en la Iglesia es lograr que todas las ovejas alcancen la salvación de Dios.

Dos formas de realizar la misión. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles (primera lectura) se realiza la misión mediante la predicación. Los apóstoles han predicado a Jesucristo, sobre todo el grande miste-rio de su muerte y resurrección, y las redes comienzan a llenarse de peces. Es tal la eficacia de la predicación, que las autoridades judías se asustan y meten a los após-toles en la cárcel. “Pero Pedro y los apóstoles respondieron: Hay que obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres”. Quien ha recibido la misma misión de Jesucristo, ¿podrá renunciar a ella? ¿podrá igualarla a cualquier otra misión en la vida? A los apóstoles les parece imposible, y no tienen miedo a pagar cualquier precio por rea-lizar su misión. La segunda forma de llevar a cabo la misión es el culto, particular-mente la actitud de adoración hacia Jesucristo, el Cordero degollado. “Digno es el Cordero degollado, de recibir el poder, la riqueza, la sabiduría, la fuerza, el honor, la gloria y la alabanza” (segunda lectura). Para que la misión de los apóstoles se realice plenamente, la predicación tiene que desembocar en el culto. Conocer que Cristo ha muerto y resucitado por nosotros, sin llegar a adorarle como nuestro Dios y Señor, es dejar incompleta la misión. Separar estas dos realidades o descui-dar excesivamente una de ellas, equivaldría a una especie de monofisismo apostó-

Bible classes in the summer. The registrations will

be open all the month of June and the first week

of July of the present year. Last year, 90 children

and 40 young people participated. We hope this

year will increase attendance.
