* SUNDAY REFLECTIONS *

Dear Sisters and Brothers: As you and I both know it is very dangerous in some places in the world, as well as locally, to walk around alone. Jericho would have been one of these at the time of Jesus. The road from Jericho to Jerusalem was filled with bandits and robbers, so most people trav-eled in convoys or caravans. You could say this man was foolhardy walking by him-self. But then, the priest and the Levite were out strolling alone, too, so maybe they were all reckless. The priest and Levite seem like heartless souls for not stopping to help this poor fellow in the ditch. The priest might have been afraid of touching him for fear that he was dead. Then, by law, he would have for-feited his status in the temple. His job was more im-portant than charity. And the Levite: Maybe he thought the man was a de-coy in cahoots with the robbers who would rush in and tackle him when he helped. Better safe than sorry. There are all kinds of stories on the news and social media about people crying for help and bystanders watching for fear of getting involved. Most people are good. We all believe that we should help others as a command of our faith, but we feel safer when our faith remains on a theoretical plane. Church on Sunday is enough. Don’t ask me to get in-volved. In our gospel this weekend the stranger is a Samari-tan, which confounds the issue because Samaritans and Jews despised each other. Jesus declares that the outsider, the Samaritan, is the hero. The one we hate is the messenger of love. The Kingdom of God knows no political or religious boundaries. As Fr. Thomas Keating writes, “There are no insiders or outsid-ers, no elite or non-elite. The Abba whom Jesus reveals is the God of the human race as a fam-ily. Everyone must be concerned about every-body else. Unconditional love is the name of the game”(The Kingdom of God Is Like, p. 21). The relevance of this story seems even more impor-tant now than the day in which it happened. Can we simply turn a blind eye to the countless numbers of peoples like Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his daughter Valeria who died while coming to America to seek a better life – like our ancestors? In 2019 we are all inter-connected with greater interaction among peoples in every conceivable way: political, social,

economic, and religious. We are one human family. The immigration concerns of Americans, illegal aliens, how best humanely to deal with issues arising from that, trigger deep emotions in people. Ultimately, like the Samaritan we called to respond in love to all peoples – to look into the eyes of another and see, in all, the Face of God! Peace and Blessings, Fr. Leo Read the Scripture for this Sunday several times. Let its words and phrases truly affect you. During the course of this week, take an inward glance and invite the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart: * [Deuteronomy] “It is not up in the sky.” Have you ever thought of aspects of God’s wisdom as “unrealistic” or “impractical”? Have there been parts of church teaching in which it has taken you some time to see the truth? How does God progressively open your eyes to wisdom? * [Deuteronomy] “It is something very near to you.” Recall a few times that you seem to have touched a deep center in yourself that you rarely notice: How did it happen? What did you discover? How has it changed you? * [Colossians] “Christ Jesus is the image of the invisi-ble God.” How do you let knowledge of Christ shape and discipline your thinking about God? Are there as-pects of your image of God that are in tension with the gospel image of Christ? * [Colossians] “In him were created…the visible and the invisible.” What sense do you make of the “invisible” domain so often referred to in the Scrip-tures? How do you explain it to yourself? What mod-ern analogies come to mind? * [Luke] “All your heart…being…strength…mind.” What aspects of yourself do you think Jesus is talking about with these different words? Why the emphasis on “all”? Are there splits in yourself that this passage seems to address? * [Luke] “And who is my neighbor?” How do you find yourself implicitly addressing this question to Jesus today? To what sorts of people does your compassion-ate interest most easily run? What sorts of people are the hardest to address as a “neighbor”?

COMMUNITY NEWS

“Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’” (Luke 10:37) This was Jesus’ command at the end of the Good Samaritan Story. Did you know that the Samaritans and Jews despised each other? The moral of the story is to love our neighbor. That means loving someone you may not know or some-one that looks different than you or someone that you don’t like. All without expecting anything in return.

FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM

The Parish Family would like to congratulate the Orso Family who celebrated the Sac-rament of Baptism on Saturday, July 13, 2019. It is our prayer that they may always model the Triune God in their families – the Domestic Church - and encounter Him in the Family of the Church. May the Lord bless Mason Axel Orso and the Orso Family that they may always recognize and cooperate with the presence of the Holy Trinity in their family and the family of the Church.
