IMMACULATE CONCEPTION - ST. ANTHONY'S PARISH 1988 to 2018 In 2018 Immaculate Conception parish in Amenia celebrated its 150 th anniversary. In honor of this event we are updating the parish history document which was created in 1988 . We hope future generations will find this information interesting. In 1988 Fr. John L Durkin became pastor and would hold this position for over 20 years which is the second longest tenure in parish history. When he took over he had to move the parish into the post-school era which meant expanding the CCD program. The parish Food Closet was established early in his tenure and continues to support local families to the present day. In 1998 Rev. Dr. Godfrey Emeka Amanchukwu was assigned to our parish. Fr. Durkin whole heartedly asked our parish to help Fr. Godfrey build Christ the King Seminary in Nigeria . The small parish got behind this in a big way. Fr. Godfrey then worked wonders. It was a great spirtual blessing for our parish. The Shrine to St. Peregrine was built at the request of Mrs. Ray McEnroe (Barbara) who also financed the project. Barbara passed away in 2005 and her children, Ray, Lee, Patty and Timmy, began the construction in accordance with their mother’s wishes. The Shrine was dedicated in 2006 in Memory of Ray and Barbara McEnroe. It is meant to provide spiritual comfort to anyone impacted by cancer . Mrs. Jerelyn (Jeri) Smith retired as Director of Religious Education (DRE) after many years of dedicated service in 2003. The Sisters of Life became summer time neighbors with the establishment of Camp St. Joseph located on the beautiful grounds of Wethersfield Garden . Mrs. Regina Syversen was brought on as Choir Director succeeding Donald Barnao and Peter Krauss in 2008. In 2009 long time parish secretary Mrs. Ann Bray retired. Mrs. Denise Conway took over these duties. Mrs. Virginia Bida began her tenure as DRE in 2010. On July 1, 2009 Fr. Kent Wilson was appointed pastor. He instituted the now regular parish event of Blessing of the Animals on feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Being a rural community you are never sure what will show up. He also began the tradition of holding a Living Nativity during advent performed by CCD students and various animals including a camel. Fr. Wilson was heavily involved in the Making All Things New program which was initiated by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan. While this process was difficult for everyone it was in fact required. In 2011 Rev. Charles Heston Joseph was reassigned leaving the parish to be supported by a single priest. St. Patrick's in Millerton was closed August 1, 2015 . On November 15, 2015 Fr. Wilson was appointed as pastor of St. Anthony's in Pine Plains. The parishes of Immaculate Conception in Amenia and St. Anthony's in Pine Plains were officially merged September 1, 2016. Upon the closing of St. Anthony's, Hillary Gaddis-Clegg became the bookkeeper for Immaculate Conception-St. Anthony’s Parish. Fr. Wilson had the cross on the Church steeple at Immaculate Conception repaired which was much needed. He was also involved in the restoration of the portrait of Mary inside the church and the statue of Our Lady outside. Page 1 of 24

Rosanna Hamm, a lifelong parishioner of Immaculate Conception-St. Anthony parish in Amenia, was born in the Dutchess County town and baptized at the parish in 1951.

“I was an infant; my great-grandfather was the one who had the first Mass held at his house, Thomas McEnroe—on my father’s side of the family; we go way back here,” Mrs. Hamm, 67, said in a phone interview with CNY. She said she loves the parish “because of my historic ties, and because it’s a wonderful community.”

She added, “It’s a very close-knit community; it’s an integral part of my life.” Mrs. Hamm has been a parish trustee for three years. She also has served as a lector for the past 30 years, and she volunteers at the parish’s food pantry and thrift shop. She taught religious education for 27 years.

Immaculate Conception-St. Anthony parish has been celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and the commemorations included a Sept. 17 Mass offered by Cardinal Dolan, followed by a parish community barbecue.

The Mass was concelebrated by priests formerly assigned to the parish, as well as by the current pastor, Father Kent Wilson, who told CNY last month that the parish community is “very friendly, with many generous people.”

The anniversary is “a reminder of the great things that this small parish has done in the community,” Father Wilson, the parish’s 12th pastor, said of the 150 years. “It is a real inspiration to have our cardinal celebrate with us here in our community…It was a real shot in the arm.”

Father Wilson became pastor of Immaculate Conception parish in 2009, succeeding Father John Durkin, who had served as pastor for almost 21 years, the second longest in parish history. (Father Francis E. Lavelle, who served from 1907 to 1950, was the longest-serving pastor.)

The parish is also served by Deacon David Weinstein; Virginia Bida, religious education coordinator; Denise Conway, parish secretary, Regina Syversen, organist and choir director; and Ken Pomeisl, web master.

St. Anthony became part of Immaculate Conception parish in 2015 under the archdiocese’s Making All Things New pastoral planning process. The two Dutchess County churches are about 18 miles apart—St. Anthony on Poplar Avenue in Pine Plains, and Immaculate Conception on Lavelle Road at South Street in Amenia. The parish has about 300 registered households.

As the parish story goes, Father Michael Riordon of St. Peter’s parish in Poughkeepsie visited an outpost of the parish, Amenia, in 1852 to offer the first Mass in town. It was at the home of Thomas McEnroe, in the Ore Bed section of the village, according to parish records.

There were some Catholic families in the town, and several Catholic men were employed in the iron ore beds at Sharon Station and Amenia. Father Patrick Tandy was assigned as the first pastor in 1868 when the first church building was constructed, located south of the village. New parish lines were drawn up, and coming within the boundaries of Immaculate Conception parish in Amenia were several mission churches.

In July 1886, lightning struck the church and caused a fire that destroyed the building, including the basement school. The following year, the present church was built, and the parochial school was again housed in the basement.

In 1958, a new modern-type parish elementary school was built on the church grounds. Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt taught classes before and after the school construction. The elementary school was founded in 1881 and closed in 1986.

In recent decades, the parish has undertaken other notable endeavors. It started the parish food pantry in the late 1980s, opened a thrift shop and built the Shrine to St. Peregrine, designed to provide spiritual comfort to cancer patients and their families.

The Sisters of Life, based in Suffern, became nearby summertime friends with the establishment of CampSt. Joseph, used for retreats, at Wethersfield Garden northeast of Millbrook. Mrs. Conway, the parish secretary, said that for the past two years parish youths who are 8th-and 9th-grade students have had retreats at Wethersfield Garden in preparation for Confirmation.

As for the Sisters of Life, Mrs. Conway said, “They attend Mass in our parish, and Father Wilson also says Mass at the chapel in Wethersfield for them throughout the summer. Many of the sisters attended the 150th anniversary of our parish, and several sang in our choir.”

Advent performances of the Living Nativity are now held, complete with animals, and performances by religious education students. Also, the cross on the steeple of Immaculate Conception has been repaired, and a portrait of the Blessed Mother inside the church and the statue of Our Lady outside have been restored.

Msgr. Thomas LeonardPosted Thursday, October 25, 2018 2:00 am

Msgr. Thomas Leonard, a former vice chancellor and regional vicar of the archdiocese who served at Holy Trinity parish in Manhattan for 24 years, died Oct. 18 at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. He was 90.

He was at Holy Trinity as pastor, 1990-2003, and senior priest administrator, 2003-2014. He came out of retirement in 2014 to serve as temporary administrator of St. Stephen of Hungary parish, Manhattan.

A Funeral Mass was to be celebrated Oct. 24 at Immaculate Conception Church, Tuckahoe, with Cardinal Dolan as principal celebrant and Father Gary Mead as homilist. A Memorial Mass is being offered Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church with Auxiliary Bishop John O’Hara as celebrant.

He was administrator of Immaculate Conception, Woodbourne, 1990; and temporary administrator of Sacred Heart of Jesus, Highland Falls, 1989-1990, and St. Brigid, Manhattan, 1971-1973. He was at Incarnation parish, Manhattan, as pastor, 1977-1989, and parochial vicar, 1967-1969, and was parochial vicar of Immaculate Conception, Irvington, 1956-1961.

He served as regional vicar of West Manhattan, 1990-1993, and chairman of the Priest Personnel Board and vice chancellor, 1973-1977.

“Everyone recalls his humor, insight, patience with people and ability to plan and anticipate things. I can’t express how important the people and the environment they worshiped in were to him,” said Msgr.Thomas Sandi, pastor of Holy Trinity since Msgr. Leonard retired from there in 2014 at age 86.

“He was both tough and tender. For better or worse, he always told the truth.”

Colleen Glazer was an actress and singer when she became a parishioner at Holy Trinity 35 years ago. She’s served the last 18 years as the director of religious education.

“I loved him because he gave me something I never knew I wanted,” she said of working in the parish.

He was appointed a member of the archdiocese’s Advisory Board and Priests’ Retirement Board and served on the faculty at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie.

“I knew him very well because of his work in the seminary when I was there in the early 1970s. He was incharge of field ministries and would check on the deacons,” Msgr. Sandi said.

“When I was ordained a priest in 1973 and wanted to go into the military to serve as a chaplain, I had to reach him because he was in charge of priest personnel.”

Born in New York City, he graduated from Regis High School in Manhattan and served two years in the U.S. Navy before completing his bachelor’s degree in English at Fordham University, the Bronx, and entering St. Joseph’s Seminary in 1951. He was ordained by Cardinal Francis Spellman in 1956 and was named a monsignor in 1974.

Rich Priestly Service Posted Wednesday, November 7, 2018 4:20 pm

The Church of New York commits back to God Msgr. Thomas P. Leonard, faithful priest for 62 years, joyful, authentic, caring human being for 90 years (CNY, Oct. 25). In turbulent times, he showed what theGospel means for us all.

Msgr. Leonard saw priesthood as service, a privileged opportunity to improve lives and bring people to their full personhood as he believed Jesus intends.

And thousands testify to his success: children with HIV, the homeless, the lonely elderly, the incarcerated, young struggling marrieds, the addicted, the victims of discrimination, basically those in the margins identified by Jesus and Pope Francis as our priorities.

Msgr. Leonard walked the streets, rang doorbells, sat at countless, endless meetings, took on civic, even ecclesiastical power, to benefit his people. He held the hands of the mourning, anointed the sick, counseled the troubled, brought the Lord’s forgiveness to the errant, and did so with profound reverencefor each person. There weren’t enough hours or days or years to get it all done.

But he had such a rich sense of priesthood as service. Sixty-two years of priesthood means that one has ministered to four generations, often in the same family. His enviable reputation for preaching guaranteed that his long list of commitments for funeral homilies never shortened.

The blessing of the life of Msgr. Leonard will carry on in the thousands of lives he touched. He took Jesus seriously and imitated Him: “I have come that they might have life and have it in abundance.” Now, God,we pray, welcome home your son, of whom You must be so proud.
