Like the early Christians, let us be filled with grati-tude and love for the Lord. The Church continues to celebrate and give thanks for the mystery of the resurrection of Christ. We acknowledge that God has appointed the risen Jesus judge of all creation. Therefore, with hearts full of hope and faith, we seek to be reconciled in his divine mercy and to share in his eternal life.

Divine Mercy
Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. It is a special day
in giving thanks for all the goodness that God has
shown us in the whole Easter mystery. This day can
be seen as the convergence of all the mysteries and
graces of Holy Week and Easter Week.
Easter Is Not Over
Most of the chocolate bunnies and colored eggs
may be history, and straw baskets and plastic grass
may be stored for another year, but Easter is not
over. The Easter season lasts until the Feast of Pentecost. During these next weeks we will continue
to celebrate in a special way the Risen Lord in our
midst. Easter, in fact, is a whole attitude of life.
Once we have recognized that it is in the death and
resurrection of Jesus that we are given new life, we
can begin to understand more clearly how we can
celebrate this special season for seven weeks, indeed for the whole year.
Lent was a time during which we looked at our
sinfulness and tried, through the power of God, to
overcome that sinful part of ourselves. At Easter we
celebrated that this sinfulness has been put to death
and that, with Jesus, we had risen in new life and new hope. The danger after Easter is to forget about
all of the progress we have made and return to our
former ways. We cannot let this happen!
Prayer, fasting and charitable works—those three
foundations of our Lenten practices cannot be stored
in boxes for another year like straw Easter baskets.
Our efforts to work with the Lord in overcoming sin in our lives cannot be discarded like wrappings from
a chocolate bunny or shells of a devoured egg.
These efforts to be better followers of Jesus must
continue throughout the year.
The fifty days of Eastertime give us an
opportunity to reflect on the mystery of God’s love. The readings from the Scriptures that we will hear
tell us of the early Christians’ efforts to live the life
of Christ in a world that was hostile to Christ’s
message. We can certainly learn something from
them about how we are to live with fidelity to the
Lord. The celebrations of this season reawaken
within us the meaning of our own baptism and confirmation and remind us of the richness of the gift
of the Eucharist. These are days of joy and hope for
we know that Christ is alive, He is risen!
