Last week I turned 47 years old. One year has passed since
my arrival at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory, yet perhaps
I have not had an opportunity to introduce myself to many of
you. I was born in Kobe, Japan, in 1968 and studied to become a
medical doctor. God, however, had another plan for me, though
the road to priesthood would be a long one.
I was baptized when I was 27 years old. That same year, I left
for Quebec, Canada, and in 2001 I entered the seminary of the
Institute of Christ the King in Italy along with Reverend Canon
Talarico and several other seminarians. After 8 years, I was or-
dained by His Eminence, Cardinal Raymond Burke, in Florence.
After a year in Rome and Florence, I was assigned to Institute
apostolates in the U.S., serving first in Chicago for two years and
then another two years in St. Louis. St. Louis, the “Gateway to
the West” was indeed that for me as it opened the way to San
Jose and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory.
I must say that my assignment here came as a real surprise
and has turned into a great joy. I hope that I can share with you
many good memories and that I may continue to work out my
salvation in service to the Oratory as a priest. May the Immacu-
late Heart of Mary keep all of us in her protective care!
Pope Francis will be visiting the U.S from September 22 to 27. Let us ask the intercession of St. Joseph that the Holy Father might proclaim and defend the truth of the Church.
O glorious St. Joseph, you were chosen by God to be the reputed father of Jesus, the most pure Spouse of Mary, ever Virgin, and Head of the Holy Family. You have been chosen by Christ’s Vic-ar as the heavenly Patron and Protector of the Church founded by Christ. Therefore, with the greatest confidence I implore your powerful assistance for the whole Church Militant. Protect, in a special manner, with true fatherly love, the Sovereign Pontiff and all the bishops and priests in communion with the See of Peter. Be the protector of all who labor for souls amid the trials and tribulations of this life; and grant that all the nations of the earth may submit with docility to that Church outside of which there is no salvation. Dearest St. Joseph, accept the offering I now make of myself to you. I dedicate myself to your service, that you may ever be my Father, my Protector and my Guide in the way of sal-vation. Obtain for me great purity of heart and a fervent love for the interior life. Grant that, after your example, all my action may be directed to the greater glory of God, in union with the divine Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and your own pa-ternal heart. Finally, pray for me that I may share in the peace and joy of your holy death. Amen.

St. Thomas of Villanova, Bishop and Confessor
“And behold one came and said to Him: Good master, what
good shall I do that I may have life everlasting?…Jesus saith to
him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to
the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come fol-
low me.” Matthew 19, 16-21
St. Thomas of Villanova was born Tomás García y Martínez
in Fuentellana, Spain in 1488. His father, a miller, and his mother
regularly gave food and supplies to the poor. Even as young boy,
he was known for his great kindness and generosity, even to the
point of going naked after having given his clothing to the poor.
He entered the University of Alcalá de Henares at 16 and
became a professor there, teaching arts, logic, and philosophy.
In 1516, by divine inspiration, he entered the Institute of the
Hermits of St. Augustine and was ordained priest in 1518. Fa-
mous for his eloquent homilies, he also had a great devotion to
the Blessed Virgin Mary, comparing her heart to the burning
bush of Moses. He was also noted for his great austerity of life
and for his deep humility. He twice refused nominations to the
post of Archbishop, finally accepting out of obedience to his
superiors. He was untiring in his charity, especially toward the
sick, orphans, and young women without a dowery; he also
helped those able to work by providing them with tools and
supplies so that they could become gainfully employed.
He died of angina in Valencia on 8 Sept. 1555 and was can-
onized by Alexander VII in 1658.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
The Sacred Liturgy of the Holy Mass comes to us directly
from Our Lord and from His own religious practices in the Jew-
ish temple and synagogue. The history of the Holy Mass goes all
the way back to the time of Adam and Abel, who offered the
first precursor of the sacrifice offered on our altars today. The
Old Testament traditions of sacrifice were handed down through
the Patriarchs, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and were
brought to their apex by Moses and the Prophets, and by David
who wrote the Psalms which accompanied the Temple worship.
All these traditions were fulfilled and brought to perfection
by Our Lord’s sacrificial death on the cross, which consummated
and replaced the sacrifices of the Old Covenant. On the night
before He died, Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist so that He
might continue His Presence among us in the reserved Sacra-
ment. By means of the Holy Eucharist He could also continue
to offer Himself for us in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the
most perfect of all sacrifices and the perpetual renewal and con-
tinuation of the Sacrifice of the Cross.
The Apostles changed very little of the ancient traditions,
except for the addition of the rite instituted by Our Lord at the
Last Supper, which is, in its essentials, the same as the one we
celebrate in the Mass today. Thus the Holy Mass incorporates
and embodies the whole history of salvation and is the highest
form of worship that can be offered to God. When we unite our
prayers to those of the priest at the altar, we should remember
that we are truly present at Calvary, and we should remember to
unite ourselves to Our Lord’s Sacrifice at the Consecration.
